Alexander van der Bellen – first speech as president-elect of Austria

PLEASE PRAY FOR BIDEN!

Pray for us in Austria,
I wrote in 2016
when it was very close
in our presidential election.
Today the US
have a similar situation.
That guy Hofer was leading
without early voting,
without mail-in ballots.
Van der Bellen will win,
the Greens are winning,
you’ll see, you were sure.
I hardly dared to hope you were right,
that kind of voting was still very new.
I was ashamed
for my country,
and when it was finally clear
I was crazy with joy.
Almost 56%,
that seemed very much.
The nation was divided,
everyone said,
and would stay that way.
How is it today?
There is still a clear majority
for harboring refugees.
Drive out the heartless!
War on the palaces,
peace to the hovels!
Like Georg Büchner said.
Actually in Austria
we have the largest palace
in the city center
and a very friendly guy
residing inside.
Biden is also very friendly
at least,
at least.

BETET FÜR BIDEN!

Betet für uns in Österreich
hab ich 2016 geschrieben
als es sehr knapp wahr
bei der Präsidentenwahl.
Heute haben die USA
eine sehr ähnliche Situation.
Hofer ist vorne gelegen,
ohne die Wahlkarten,
ohne Briefwahl.
Van der Bellen gewinnt,
die Grünen gewinnen,
wirst sehen, hast du gesagt.
Ich hab es kaum zu hoffen gewagt,
Wahlkarten waren noch relativ neu.
Ich hab mich geschämt
als Österreicher
und als es endlich klar war
hab ich gejubelt,
fast 56 % für van der Bellen.
Das Land sei gespalten,
haben alle gesagt,
das werde so bleiben.
Wie ist es heute?
Eine deutliche Mehrheit
ist weiterhin dafür,
Flüchtlingen zu helfen.
Verjagt die Herzlosen!
Friede den Hütten,
Krieg den Palästen!
Naja, in Österreich
haben wir halt die größten Paläste
im Stadtzentrum
und einen sehr freundlichen Mann
in der Hofburg.
Biden ist
auch sehr, sehr freundlich.
Immerhin.
