VENICE

Stravinsky lies buried in Venice.
Diaghilev too.
Joseph Brodsky lies buried in Venice,
and Ezra Pound.
It’s a strange island.
Out in the back on the way to the nicer islands, Murano, Burano.
It’s mostly ashes, stored in big vaults.
People are born, people come, people die;
but the island doesn’t get bigger.
There are prominent children’s graves,
ordinary children.
Venice is like New York city.
The Veneto region could be New York state
or more of New England.
Venice has many parts, just like New York.
Beaches are rather nice actually,
the Lido is long.
If you can make out there,
you’ll make out anywhere,
anytime in your world.
Sooner or later you pay the ferryman,
the Vaporetto, just get a card
for three days, very well worth it.
Most of the graves of strangers here
are not well tended.
So come again
but get away
while you can.

TRAVEL

They say the soul doesn’t go faster
than a camel.
We flew from Riga to Vienna
a few days ago.
Maybe one day we’ll do it by rail,
right now it would be rather complicated.
Our souls, could be they are still at the beach
or in the forest at the Baltic sea
in a few days they might steal a ride
coming here, hopefully.
How many times did we fly to China?
How many souls dazed and exhausted
out in the deserts along the Great Wall?

MOON

The moon
looks like Iron Man’s mask.
He dies in the end,
sorry, spoiler alert,
Iron Man, not the moon.
The moon lives on
in our hearts, like the sun,
in plants and animals,
and in the tides
and things like that,
although I don’t really know.
We do what we can.

Death is next to light,
dark at the other side of white.
Living things die.
We get to watch ourselves
for a while,
to watch each other
much longer
than many things in the world,
it must seem.

An abandoned lot.
Old wooden house in the back,
boarded up.
The woods come back onto the boulevard.
Crickets, weeds, insects, bees.
Tall trees, they love that here.
Lots of humans like
lots of no humans
where they can hide
for a while.

最喜欢的海滩
曾经是苏联海边
俄罗斯有时很恐怖
俄罗斯是前苏联核心
苏联解放了东欧
解放了维也纳
解放了柏林
去掉纳粹恐怖
随后苏联在东欧
就建设了帝国
拉脱维亚立陶宛爱斯托尼亚
一百多年前
曾经是俄罗斯帝国一部分
更早有其他的，
立陶宛跟波兰是一个大帝国，
有大瑞典等等。

The world is grinding to a halt.
