allerseelen

heute war doch allerseelen
wir sind nur daheim geblieben
haben uns gar viel gestritten
heute war ein schoener tag
es hat wirklich kaum geregnet
ich war doch ein bisschen draussen
aber leo war verkuehlt
endlich haben wir gelueftet
mehr gelueftet als gestritten
hoffentlich hat es genuetzt

allerheiligen

es ist allerheiligen
viele baeume sind schon kahl
loewen liegen auf dem rasen
oder eher an den wegen
alle denken an die toten
es sind lauter warme tage

es ist allerheiligen
manche sehen auch so aus
mit den dunklen sonnenbrillen
unter abgedecktem himmel
manche ruecken eng zusammen
loewinnen mit schweren bruesten

es ist allerheiligen
viele baeume sind schon kahl
gaensebluemchen bluehn im garten
kinder rennen hin und her
kinder sammeln viele zapfen
abends kommt die sonne durch
leuchtend steht das arsenal

many people have died. there was an earthquake. no, i mean famous people. tony hillerman. great author. mystery novels, navaho lore. the former mayor of vienna. and the most famous of them all, our great rightist. i feel an inner emptiness. read our exclusive interview with the widow on all souls day. maybe he should have died earlier. the rightist? much earlier. the former mayor? he was a great guy, everyone says. helped with the start of vienna’s jewish museum. very popular. lost his right hand opening a letter bomb. no, he really was very popular. but he was against the chancellor. who cares about the austrian chancellor? he wasn’t bad at all. he’s still chancellor, actually, but everybody talks about him in the past tense since summer. red man walking, that was a caption from a press conference with hardly any reporters there. the red and the black. and the greens. and the blues. very strong in austria. so they had another election. everybody said it was coming. and he wasn’t all that popular. that’s what they always said. though he had won in 2006. red majority again. no rightists in government anymore. only the black ones. who cares? so if he had not been around, i mean the former mayor, they would have had another election anyway. which was really unpopular, but nobody cared. it was good for the blues.

boxes

we have received a load of books
and furniture and crockery
and finally we have our bed
and lots of stuff that i forgot
you say it gave you back your life
we had a lot of life without
our bed in other people’s beds
or maybe not an awful lot
we have received a load of books
and tableware and draperies
we also had a lot of strife
and anyway, it was ok
in other people’s neighbourhoods
it was ok to take it slow
we have received a lot of stuff
it feels like yesterday we left
it will take years to settle here

If it is premature to protect beluga whales in Cook Inlet now, then the time will be mature, by Gov. Sarah Palin’s logic, only when there are none left.

respect

manunkind delivery
manunkind in livery
don’t deliver manunkind
better teach him some respect
there are many brilliant thoughts
there are systems and traditions
there is fervor on the left
on the right there’s even less
i have great respect for cummings
i have great respect for chomsky
if i am for any party
in the world of politics
if i am for anybody
let me tell you i like parties
guess i’ll have to go for greens
radishes and celery
if they taste good, teach respect
teach respect for living things
living things and suffering
manunkind had many saviours
if i vote for anything
anything or anybody
better teach me some respect

www.respekt.cz is a czek magazine. they have a very interesting article about milan kundera this week. the famous writer is supposed to have denounced someone in 1950. that guy was nearly executed and spent 14 years in a uranium mine. i liked the unbearable lightness of being very much. that was a while ago, don’t remember when. don’t remember any other text by him that left a lasting impression. i am not a very careful or purposeful reader, i think.
i haven’t seen the allegations covered in any other media, except a short notice yesterday in an Austrian paper which said that Kundera demanded an apology. ok, lets google. there were some articles, it seems, one in the guardian, one in the washingto post, or was it ny times? but if it is true, why isn’t it all over the place? the article did sound carefully written, that’s all i can say.

we were up in the playground part of the belvedere park, it was a great sunday, maybe the best one of this fall, beautiful sunshine. so we stayed all day. jackie brought lunch from a restaurant across from the train station. so she saw the news, i guess. she was rather sober. i felt like celebrating, once i heard. the situation could be dangerous, of course. the two rightist parties could re-unite. And they got 29 % together in the election two weeks ago. So we don’t know if it is such a great thing to be rid of this one guy, finally. Maybe they should have been driving together, two dead rightists, better than one. Anyway, I felt like singing. Yeah, I know, he was driving to his mother’s 90th birthday, something like that. Nazi mother, they say. Oh well. Roast in peace. No, we don’t go around wishing people dead all the time. Even stupid people, I am stupid enough every day. Even evil people. We don’t have a personal stake in this one. But imagine – all these years without this jerk in the news. would they have found another one? Oh well. Sunny sundays.

voting for right-wing parties shows your spite for the current system. this time the voting age was 16. some politicians and some media people thought we needed yet another election. we’ve had them every two years since the 90s. but people were fed up with the ruling coalition, not just with a few faces. they should have worked together, instead of calling another election.

the streets around our house in this old part of vienna have grass growing in the pavement between the cobbles. the grass is there, even though the cars drive on it every day. there was a lot of rain lately, so the air is good, you can smell the trees in the park and in the backyards. and there are weeds growing on the sidewalks. my daughter picks up chestnuts and makes them into necklaces and animals, at home and in kindergarten.

see the moon

did you see the moon last night?
it was here between the trees
it was up there in the sky
up above the underground
up above the danube bridge
in a tree in our backyard
after dinner with some friends
did you see the moon last night?
did it mean something to you
did you ever feel at home
when you saw the moon was full?
did it make you think of friends
think of what you left behind
it was rather cold last night
we saw the moon a year ago
from our balcony in beijing
guess we’ll see it here next year
did you see the moon last night?
we are somewhere in between

china

china is the common man
china’s not the president
china’s not the stadium
china’s only scraping by
working on the stadium
working in the factories
ironing for other people
china is the common woman
china doesn’t have a car
china always takes the bus
china’s working for her son
china’s living with her son
now his wife can drive a car
china grew up in the 50s
many people starved to death
back in 1959
later on she went to work
in the cultural revolution
back in 1969
somewhere in a border region
working in an army unit
some got sick from dirty water
somewhere in mongolia
staid for over seven years
teaching other people’s children
then in 1977
then you had to say you’re sick
you would need to build connections
finally they let you go
beijing was just like before
first it only got more crowded
then they brought in private money
razed the crowded little houses
razed the worker’s houses, too
she was working in a factory
then she went to work for us
now she’s living with her son
in a factory apartment
now they have a bigger one
he is married with a car
china is the common man
china has a bicycle
but not everyone of them
working on the stadium
they are from the countryside
china’s only scraping by
china’s doing very well
