2009
11 years ago I was happy.
Our daughter had her first day of school,
she was just turning 7.
We knew she was smart, talented, beautiful.
We were rather worried about her brother,
he had hardly started to talk
and wasn’t always well treated in Kindergarten.
But we found a new place where he was happy,
and we were happy for Maia.
Our kids are born in Beijing,
2002 and 2005. China will always be part
of their identity. Both of them know that.
They don’t want to lose their Chinese,
although there are lots of other problems.
Maia’s primary school wasn’t good for her.
Leo’s primary school wasn’t bad,
he just takes a very long time
for reading and writing. Both of them are
native speakers of English. German is
taken for granted, although it’s harder
than English and Chinese. Yeah, I know,
it takes so much effort to write in Chinese,
to read and write. But maybe Leo would have done better
in Chinese at first, maybe not.
English for sure. Anyway,
we had other problems.
Leo is doing better now,
and Maia is in a good high school.
She is 18.
Guess I should be happy.

11 QUESTIONS asked by Zhuang Sheng
1. Could you please introduce yourself?
Martin Winter, Chinese name 维马丁, poet and translator from Chinese into German and English.
2. Where did you spend this year’s Spring Festival?
At home in Vienna. Yi Sha 伊沙 and six other poets from China (Tu Ya 图雅, Jiang Huhai 江湖海, Xiang Lianzi 湘莲子, Pang Qiongzhen 庞琼珍, Bai Li 白立 and Chun Sue 春树) had just left, after spending over two weeks in Austria in January. You could also say we had Spring Festival together, in Innsbruck in Tyrol in the alps, with poets there, and in Vienna, also with friends. Bai Li was our best cook, and all of them made really good food, we made Jiaozi together, you know, Chinese dumplings, and many other dishes. Yi Sha likes to cook tomatoes and eggs, very simple dish, but very good. We celebrated together, and they went back one day before the lunar new year.
3. How has this virus crisis affected you?
Actually, here in Austria it has only just started to affect everyone. Schools are closed, also most shops. I have been working from home before already, so there is no big change. But I have to be afraid of both short-term and long-term effects in the publishing world, in China and in Europe.
4. How do you spend your time now?
I work from home, so the only big change is that my wife and my son are also home all day. My daughter already has her own apartment, but it is close by. She moved in February, when it was still normal. She was with us on the weekend, we are going to see her again tomorrow or so. People are supposed to stay at home, but you can go shopping for food, medicine, tobacco.
5. How is your mood these days?
Ok, maybe a little worried, but ok, not bad.
6. What are you most satisfied with from before this crisis? Can you give an impression of the efforts against the virus in your location?
My poems. My work. My family, friends, contacts, local and international. The measures against the virus here in Austria and in Vienna have only just started in earnest. There is some criticism that tourism was stopped too late in Tyrol. People who came to ski from all over Europe, and some got sick there, maybe a lot.
7. What is the best thing you have eaten during this crisis?
My wife is at home, so she cooks more. She likes to buy lamb and beef from the Muslim halal butcher at the vegetable market close by. Our vegetables are from there too. My son likes to help with cooking. Today they made lasagna, from scratch. Most food shops are open, even some restaurants for take out. Some Chinese shops have closed. Hope there are still one or two open in the city. But that’s just for spices and sauces like 老干妈.
8. What has worried your family and relations in this crisis?
My parents stay at home. My sister lives very close to them, and her sons help them. One of them is studying to be a doctor, he was working in a hospital. Hope he is ok.
9. In this global crisis, what do you think about poets writing poetry? Have you written poetry in this time?
This is a very good time for writing, reading, translating, even for distributing and discussing poetry, at least online. I have followed the situation in China. People compared the slogans warning you not to go out, some of these were very nasty and violent, to the writing on boxes sent from Japan, relief goods for Wuhan. There was Tang poetry on there, to remind people of their common heritage. Something about mountains and streams, Reminds me of Du Fu, mountains and rivers remain. So people compared this ancient culture to the crude slogans and said we should learn from the Japanese. Then one guy wrote an article in the Yangtze daily 长江日报 on February 12 and quoted Adorno who said poetry after Auschwitz was barbaric, so we don’t need poetry from Japan, because of what the Japanese did in the war. Any simple slogan was better, no poetry required, he said. But Tang poetry is very much what defines China, Chinese culture, also poetry in general. So everyone trashed this guy online. And people wrote even more poetry than before, a lot of it related to the crisis. Poems for Dr. Li Wenliang, the eye doctor from Wuhan who was one of the early whistle-blowers in late December 2019, and got reprimanded, and continued to work and died from the virus. That was world news, everyone knows this, also here in Austria. So in China on the whole there is a creative burst in this crisis, which is a very good thing, it gives hope. Some of these new poems are really very, very good. Yes, I have written a few poems myself. Some are related to China. I’ll see how it goes here in Europe. People have to stay at home, so they have more time for artistic pursuits, making music, for example. Singing from the balconies.
10. When the crisis is over, what are you most eager to do?
Don’t know yet, it has only just started here. Go out, meet people. My book is coming out in China, “Finally We Have Snow”, translated by Yi Sha. Should have come out in February. So I had planned to present the book in China this spring, at the Austrian embassy in Beijing, and at other places, maybe Xi’an etc. Anyway, my expertise is in intercultural, international contact with Chinese language, literature, poetry. So I am most eager to work in this field.
11. What do you think about the global situation?
It has brought people together. It is good for the climate, hopefully also for the social climate locally and internationally. There are always people who play us and them, but people do have a lot in common, much more than we realize. And now we have this one thing in common, globally. Everybody seems to agree on that.

TIME
My best time for writing poetry
was when I had time,
when I had all the time in the world
and nary a care.
I had time enough to read
Yu Hua’s every novel and many stories,
just because of the feel of his language
and Republic of Wine by Mo Yan
and Gao Xingjian, all in Chinese.
I didn’t write many poems.
Maia was small. I had time before her.
Actually, translating more poetry
began just before Leo was born.
Anyway, we were in China
forever.

HONG KONG
for thirty years
every single year
spring days waning
cicadas come calling
that one day
people there
come out in the streets
light candles for us
observe our memory
grieve
for us
they do not forget
the only city on earth
2019.6.13
Translated by MW, 6/15/19
“I don’t dare to share this poem in my WeChat groups. Unfortunately, most people in mainland China have no idea at all what happens abroad. They don’t know anything. Least of all that Hong Kong is a very special city with a great heart full of love and freedom. And for us Chinese people, that single one city on earth is slowly disappearing.”
Translated by MW, 6/15/19

IT WAS TWENTY YEARS AGO
it was just ten years ago
ten and a half, a little more
ten years ago
feels like twenty years
this was our place
this was our house
our stairs
our door
this was our apartment
you were pregnant here
you climbed these stairs
to the seventh floor
with eighteen kilos more
in the summer
over 40 degrees celsius
humid, mosquitoes
this was our place
very small children
small bathroom
small tub
what a great luxury
terrace
plants are still there
the most important ones
pashanhu in chinese
what’s it called?
climbs up the railings,
the stuff we erected
only ten years ago,
twelve years ago,
fifteen years ago,
some of it.
the roofs,
the birds in the morning,
bats
the other buildings
the view,
the people,
the smells
we were

lonely hearts club band

NOBLE POEM

MW October 2016
last week the brazilian author ricardo domeneck wrote a noble commentary on Facebook that actually sounds a little dylanesque, partly. masters of war, yes. dynamite. 伊沙 has a great little nobel dynamite poem. from 1992. we had a reading here in vienna on Oct. 15 in our new housing close to the new central train station. we have a library downstairs. run by people from our house, we are there often. open to other houses, gudrun and peter built a stage, and we have theatre. and we had a bob dylan night a few months ago. masters of war is a little like my poem X&Y. x was cruel/ butt is sore/ y was able/ and suave./ both loved culture/ both destroyed/ hundred million/ butts are cold. written march 2007 in beijing. yes, nixon and kissinger, mao and zhou, maybe there is a pair like that in brazil? only six or seven swedes in over 100 years of a great swedish prize for literature is actually not very much, is it? wonder if ricardo brazil/domeneck/africa ever read tomas tranströmer. oh well. pity this busy monster manunkind/ not. progress is a comfortable disease:/ your victim (death and live safely beyond) plays with the bigness of its littleness …[…] pity poor flesh and trees, poor stars and stones, but never this fine specimen …. listen: there’s a hell/ of a good universe next door. let’s go. there must be some way out of here, said the joker to the thief …
yes, the music of jimi hendrix. dylan is honored as tip of the iceberg, should be chuck berry and many others at the same time. preferably african brazilian women. yes, manunkind maybe doesn’t always deserve something poor ricardo doesn’t always get, maybe. pity. oh yes.

Yi Sha
ICELAND
That was 14 years ago
I was abroad for the first time
in Sweden
at a poetry festival in Nässjö.
I saw a female poet from Iceland,
she was reciting up on the stage
as if she was in bed
under a man reacting to him.
She was panting,
that was her voice.
She wrote in a poem:
“In a dark night in Island,
a woman
sticks a light bulb
into her vagina …”,
shocking even
our Chinese
lower body poetess.
But apart from the stage
she had no intercourse with anyone.
A lonely shadow,
a wandering soul.
Maybe like her country
on the map,
floating piece of ice
in the sea.

ISLAND
das war vor 14 jahren.
ich bin zum ersten mal im ausland,

auf dem poesiefestival in nässjö
seh ich eine dichterin aus island.
sie liest auf der bühne
als ob sie sich im bett
unter einem mann winden würde
ihre stimme
ist ein stöhnen.
“in einer langen nacht in island
steckt sich eine frau
eine glühbirne in ihre scheide …”
sie hat unsere chinesische dichterin
berühmt für ihre unterleibspoesie
umgeworfen.
aber außerhalb der bühne
spricht sie mit keinem menschen.
sie ist immer allein
eine wandernde seele.
so wie ihre nation
auf der karte,
eine eisscholle im meer.

DAUGHTER SAYS
My daughter says
“When I was small
I thought white clouds
threw the sun into prison.
If the sun was strong enough
it could break out.
If clouds were black
the sun was sad.
Rain
meant she was weeping.”
The sun is female
in German;
my daughter didn’t realize
this point,
but she knows in English
it’s “he”
and in Chinese “ta” 他.
“Ta” 她 can be many things
ta 她 ta 它 ta 牠 – he she it

EINE KLEINE NACHTMUSIK
eine frau
mit einer stahlsäge
sägt meine nerven
sie weiß
meine nerven
halten gar keine säge aus
sie weiß
was am meisten weh tut
das ist der klang
wenn eine stahlsäge
nerven durchschneidet
sieht man kein blut
euch guten menschen
tut es unerträglich weh
ich hab noch das herz
euch zu sagen
ich hab ein herz aus stahlbeton
dass ich nicht gerührt bin
das kommt von einem einfachen grund
einem ganz banalen
ich möchte leben
mitten unter den leuten

EMAIL AN G., MEINE FRAU, KAM AN ALS WUST VON SONDERZEICHEN
drachenpferdhaus-sommerinsel des meisters
tranströmer- apfelbaumhain
was ich sage im herzen
ist nur für deine ohren
der alte versteht mein gedicht “farbenblind”
und lässt es gelten
aber ich entspring noch einmal
aus dem freudenmoment
auf dem couchtisch liegt
sein gedichtband auf hindi
ganz frisch hergeschickt
aber ich neid ihm nicht seinen erfolg
sondern wie er geliebt wird
in seinem alter
seit 12 jahren
vom schlaganfall stumm
kann grad noch summen
wie eine biene
nur seine monika
versteht was er sagt
seinen ganzen ausdruck
wie ein kind dass sich verirrt hat
voller erwartung
schaut er sie an, schaut sie an
liebe
ist das unsere zukunft
kann ich es verdienen
ich will nichts mehr sagen
von heute an
werd ich mich bemühen
