CARSICK DOG
Little Chur getting carsick
confounds me. I thought
only people could have that.
Papa says, maybe the earth
also is a carsick dog,
this year she went out, forgot taking her pills,
now there‘s an earthquake, there’s a volcano
and there is COVID-19.

Mogan Bixian
ALIVE
I am against holding a meeting,
but here I am shooting my mouth off.
I am against not wearing a mask
and don’t hold that back.
These years
I always hold it till there’s a classic,
one statement
ruining my future.
I live how I like it,
so what!
Just like I write
how I love to,
exactly like that,
even though these poems
won’t ever take any prize
for their form.

Yang Yujun
MY WORRY HAS NOT STOPPED BY AS SCHEDULED
You didn’t come,
so my sin was not established.
One time you were laid up,
brain haemorrhage, hospital.
Another time it was volcano ash,
planes cancelled.
Then it was bugs on the vines,
red wine tasting event got postponed.
You said fermented fruits
are no longer forbidden.
I think there is more flavour
in waiting than is tasting.
—
In the end my reputation
was saved
by a virus.

MOURNING
Time flies like light passing through blinds to the second shelf on the first book rack by the window, an old alarm clock between a few books of poetry, lingering on the second hand, as big as “Driftwood” by Luo Fu, but I still browse like an impatient youth to verify yellowing memories the umpteenth time.

20 BILLION YUAN
An official from the civil aviation board said,
because of the virus,
they reimbursed tickets
for over 20 billion yuan.
All these banknotes should fly in the sky,
now they are down in the dust,
they change into rice, pasta and oil,
change into water fee, electricity fee, gas fee,
change into masks, toilet paper, 84-disinfectant
Some even change into
hospital admittance fee, medicine expense, funeral costs.
From now on they’ll never fly anymore.

NICHT ÜBERRASCHT
Jemand postet für eine Ausstellung internationaler Gedichte
im Viruskampf die Liste der eingeladenen AutorInnen.
Der erste Kommentar unten ist die Frage:
„Da ist Jian Ming dabei,
der ist doch schon voriges Jahr gestorben?“
Noch ein Kommentar:
„Wu An ist bald fünf Jahre tot,
hast du ihn gefragt ob er mitmacht?“
Ich les weiter und sage nichts.
Vor einigen Jahren bei einer Veranstaltung
hat eine Sprecherin der staatlichen Künstlervereinigung
verkündet: „Der große Dicher Ai Qing [Vater von Ai Weiwei, 1910-1996]
wird auch bei uns live davei sein!“
Als ich das gehört hab
hab ich kalten Schweiß gespürt.
Jetzt passiert mir das nicht mehr.
Wenn du mir heute sagst,
Konfuzius plant ein Buch der Lieder
gegen Corona bin ich überhaupt nicht überrascht.

ONE
One month ago, a little more, less than two
the world went quiet.
It had become quiet in China before
accompanied by all sorts of noise.
But when it arrived
it was precious.
There is strife here too,
who caused it to spread,
who didn’t close
ski entertainment.
But on the whole
Austria
or any place actually
became like never before,
except in or after the war,
and that was very different,
not that I was around.
But no Nazis, for one.
Yeah, maybe right after the war,
they were also in hiding.
Anyway, in times of peace,
only one headline:
Look Out For Youse,
something like that,
look out for yourself and each other,
but in one word.
Schaut auf Euch.
And we were lucky.
Take care!

A Yu
MASKS! MASKS! MASKS!
In an Iranian movie
I see masses of people in demonstrations,
suddenly I exclaim:
They didn’t wear face masks back then!
Then I pick up my phone,
go on looking for face masks,
until my wife loudly repeats:
Veils! Veils! Veils!
Then I finally get it.

MUNDSCHUTZ! MUNDSCHUTZ! MUNDSCHUTZ!
In einem iranischen Film
seh ich Menschenmengen in Demonstrationen.
Ich ruf unwillkürlich aus,
die haben doch früher keinen Mundschutz getragen!
Dann nehm ich das Handy,
such weiter nach Masken,
bis meine Frau laut wiederholt:
Schleier! Schleier! Schleier!
Dann reagier ich erst.

give our departed

NORTHEAST SNOW STORM
The woman inside
pushes with all her might
but cannot open the door
to her man outside,
whose eyebrows are white.
He pulls up his legs from the snow
and tries to walk on.
Looking back he sees on the roof
how his wife
climbs out of the smokestack.
The whole Northeast
has added three feet.

Hong Zhu
YERPA
Attachment is hard, you want to break free and you can’t.
Laughter, then crying, crying, then laughs.
Is laughing better? Not as high as the mountain or small as the moon.
You are still attached, you want to forget and you can’t.
Would be good if you could, good and gone.
Gone but not gone? Be good, leave it unfinished?
Attachment is ever unfinished.
Because you want too much, and receive not enough,
you have trouble. Black hair can be cut,
trouble cannot.
Attachment is understood but not gone, because you don`t want it
or cause you don’t dare? You can`t give it up,
or don`t get what you want?
You have one hundred thousand great peaks, I only want
a temple so small you don’t know it is there.
You have the ends of the world, I only want
ten steps of green grass.

RETURN
From the foot of the mountain all the way to the top
no trace of a person,
no sound of a bird.
Mighty snow
made the world very silent.
Sky and earth deserted.
I hoped to find a companion,

But in the season for fires,
no furnace was lit.
Alone going up,
alone coming down,
I could only trace my own footprints.

LETHAL WEAPON
Faced with three or four competitors,
how did I manage to win my wife?
It was because one day
at six in the morning
I was already at the door to her dormitory,

I just smiled,
pointing behind
to her dormitory,
said I had never left

sagten sie Herr Ai, heute so früh!
Ich lächelte nur,
deutete
auf ihr Wohnheim
und sagte:
Ich bin seit gestern hier.

He Jin
1977
It was a beautiful time,
it was a fucking bad time.
We supposed-to-be-educated youths went off to exams
and more than half fell through.
If I had managed to fill in those two blanks,
I would have survived.
Who was Cao Xueqin?
Who was Qin Keqing?
Forward to now, Cao wrote Dream of the Red Chamber, everyone knows.
Qin Keqing, she’s one of 12 beauties
in the mystery novel,
the one most tight with Sister Feng.
In that blank space,
I drew a cow turd.
In the space for Cao Xueqin, because I was mad,
I wrote he was the third little girl
of old Cao
in our backyard.

DOUBT
Every time
the director comes into our class
for inspection
our teacher always lets us
quickly sit down nicely.
No talking
eyes straight ahead.
Even now
I don‘t understand
why
we have to do this.
Why
can’t we say hello to
or embrace the director.

Liu Jian

kein einziges Zeichen.
Das ist auch der Sinn des Schreibens,
– den Kakerlaken noch ein paar Bücher,
noch ein paar Tage Fressen zu lassen.

MAGNOLIA TREES
The magnolia trees along Freedom Street

after another of white N95 face masks.

MUNDSCHUTZ

BUILDING BLOCKS
Stuck at home
I took out my son’s building blocks,
no-one had piled them up for a while.
I made a train,
pushed it over.
Made a tall building
and pushed it down.
Made a cross,
pushed it over.
On the day when Dr. Li Wenliang died,
I didn’t think and piled up a gravestone
and couldn’t push it down
anymore.

BAUSTEINE

Hong Junzhi
THE STORY OF “THE SCREAM“ BY EDVARD MUNCH
Yesterday I had lunch
with the guy from The Scream
by Edvard Munch
where he stands on the bridge.
I asked him,
What happened to your ears?
He said it was the worst day
of the Corona virus in Norway.
His Mama was gravely ill
and he walked across the bridge to take care of her.
But on the bridge, right in the middle,
someone snatched his face mask away.
What you see now, he said,
how I frantically clutch
my hands to my ears
is because both my ears
had been cut off.

Yan Li
ANRUFEN
kannst keinesfalls angehen, was der Instinkt
