“WELT BLEIB WACH”
Welt, bleib wach
sagt meine Werbung für Thalia.at
Ich mag Buchhandlungen
Maybe they have Mary and the Witch’s Flower
or we’ll get it in China
Thalia is big enough
the main one at Wien Mitte
to have stuff in English and DVDs
and other languages maybe
I dream of a bookstore
with Turkish Arabic Czech and Hungarian
Slovac Italian Hebrew Slovenian
and many other books
in Vienna
a chain store
maybe Thalia even
that would be something
to stem the tide
of people glued to their smartphones
or screens with ebooks
from Thalia.at
maybe just a little

SOMEONE SAYS THERE ARE MORE EMOTIONS THAN THERE ARE EMOJIS
In a quick ad they say that very quickly
in German they are so excited
there is an extra r
Es gibtr mehr Gefühle als Emojis
Who cares
people ain’t gonna read any more books
if you tell them books are cooler than movies
or things on a screen
which could be books
or poetry
Anyway
sell your books
more power to you
Your campaign in German is rather retro
Welt, bleib wach
sounds like something from 1932
Afterwards
everyone knows
world didn’t stay awake, not enough
Racism
Fascism
Stalinism
Maoism
Neoliberalism
ILLIBERAL DEMOCRATIC
STRONGMANISM
Just how long would you have to stay awake
with a nice book
from the chain store
with this nice ad
to prevent
anything
I have a poem about emojis
no, it’s not written in emojis
it’s in Chinese
I translated it into German
its a very nice poem
They have it up in the streetcars
and buses in Stuttgart
Maybe two more months
I still don’t have a photograph
They sent me two posters
they also sent two posters to China
and a very nice letter
Poetry doesn’t prevent anything
Mao wrote poetry
Stalin wrote poetry
Don’t know if Mussolini
wrote poetry
or Tojo or Franco
or that fucking German Austrian fart
Emojis are nice
Emojis are not competing with books
The poem is by Jiang Xinhe
she was 14
when she wrote it in 2017
The poem is called USELESS CHINESE
that’s a short version
MY CHINESE IN SCHOOL IS USELESS SOMETIMES
On a train through the desert
I add
an Uighur boy on my WeChat
When I’m back in Shenzhen we say hello
but I don’t understand Uighur
and he doesn’t understand Chinese writing
Talking doesn’t work out either
so we can only send emojis
We have used every emoji available
all the way down
now
we are starting again
from the top
7/8/2017
So what’s your emotion
after reading this poem?
Do you know
what’s going on about Uighurs
in China?
Right now, in 2018?
The camps
must have been there
in 2017, last year,
some of them.
Hundreds of thousands, some say one million
mostly men and boys
caught up in camps
for re-education.
Women, too.
So where is that boy now?
I am afraid
to ask the poet.

LUNCH BOX
At work I eat up my rice and so on
pour a cup of tea
into the glass box
brush back and forth with my chopsticks
drink it down in one sip
light a cigarette
and a young colleague born in the 90s cannot stop staring.

MONKEY KING
More than half of the kinky underwear
in China is produced in Guanyun county.
This boy
writes his homework
every afternoon
next to his mother’s sewing machine.
In the split
between math
and Chinese
he helps his mum to carry boxes of
split-bottom lace panties.

FUSSMASSAGE
Sie sagt: Nicht mit den Fingern!
Nimmt eine Gänsefeder aus ihrer Tasche,
lässt mich ihre Fussohlen kitzeln
und mit ihr plaudern bis sie einschläft.
Manchmal zieht sie die Füße ein,
manchmal lacht sie,
das klingt manchmal wie ein Orgasmus.
Wir plaudern über The Promise von Chen Kaige,
über 1,3 Milliarden Leute in China
und Andy Lau aus Hongkong.
Sie ist eingeschlafen.
Ich kitzle
wie ein schweigsamer Mönch,
bald schlaf ich auch.
Also üb ich Kalligraphie
auf ihren Sohlen.
Yong, Yong, Yong, das heißt ewig.
永,永,永
Diän, Diän, Diän, Opfergabe oder auch Fundament.
奠,奠,奠

QUEST
It was in 1999,
last year of the 20th century.
The poet Ma Lan
with her American husband,
a Yale professor,
came to visit old Chang’an.
At the Small Wild Goose pagoda
in the teahouse Scented Snow Sea
we had a good meeting.
The Yale professor
of Chinese literature
had a point of view
that opened my eyes
and resonated in my heart,
I had been thinking about this for years.
He said, “In the May Fourth era,
those writers who studied in Japan,
why were they so dominant?”
Today, I am finally in Japan
and I carry this question,
roaming the coast and mountains of Honshu.
Let me think,
let me think it over,
I have enough time to think of an answer.
What was it,
what was it here,
that made them
bury themselves in their work,
lay their life on the line,
fight for truth,
plead for the people
and become the backbone of modern China?

JAPAN VISA
I hand over
my household registration,
my ID card.
my passport,
a certificate from my work
for how many years of employment,
how much I make every month,
how many days of vacation they gave me,
how much of that I’ll be spending abroad.
Proof that I own my apartment,
dirver’s licence,
bank certificate, signed and stamped
about my income this year
and over 100.000 in my my account.
It wasn’t easy, but someone
went for me to the people’s court
in another city 500 miles away
and copied
my divorce agreement
from 27 years ago.
My Shiba Inu,
pure Japanese breed,
secretly
went along after me,
also like some kind of
proof.

MUTE
Ten years ago
everyone in this town
was up in the hills picking manganese ore
If you had a hill
you were a mine boss
If you had no hill
you were a mine worker
Big trucks on county roads
coming and going
A beautiful woman arrived from afar
and married into a mine
Her child
was called Manganese Mountain
Manganese Mountain grew day by day
but in a few years
the mountains were empty
The government put up yellow bands
sealed off the hills to cultivate trees
Manganese Mountain grew day by day
When his beautiful mother left
he hadn’t started to speak
Translated by MW, Sept. 2018

STUMM
Vor zehn Jahren
haben alle im Ort
auf den Hügeln Manganerz geklaubt.
Wer einen Berg hat
ist ein Manganboss.
Leute ohne Berg
sind die Bergleute.
Große Lastwagen auf den Landstraßen
die ganze Zeit.
Eine schöne Frau aus der Ferne
heiratet in unsere Berge
bekommt ein Kind
mit dem Namen Manganberg.
Manganberg wird jeden Tag größer.
Ein paar Jahre später
sind die Berge leergegraben.
Die Behörde spannt ein gelbes Band
dass der Wald sich erholt.
Manganberg wird jeden Tag größer
bis seine schöne Mama weggeht
kann er noch nicht sprechen.

EARTH WILLOW
Little brother told me
in America on Google Earth
he can see the old willow tree at our old home
when you find the willow
you find our place
30 years ago on holiday from college
I worked in the fields with my father
noticed the willow shoot
begged father to dig it out
and plant it at the water hole in front of our gate.
Now I can’t even put
my arms all around it.
Three people have died in our family
but our tree
has made it onto the map in the sky.

hab ich mit meinem vater im feld gearbeitet
