PROGRESS
 
Two students write essays
on two people with depression.
A drop-out student and
a teacher who committed suicide.
In my days of course
our essays had no such contents
or focused on any such people.
But also in my 24 years teaching writing
they are the first two.
If you say there’s no progress at all
I’ll get fucking angry.
You guys way up there
you raise your arms high
and cry out in sorrow
for the fate of our nation.
I am responsible for little steps
and some tiny progress.

《时代在进步》
 
在两位学生的作文中
写到两位抑郁症患者
一位是休学的同学
一位是自杀的老师
莫说我们当年的作文
一定不会有此内容
和对他人的关怀
在我24年写作课史上
也是头两例
你要说时代毫无进步
我他妈跟你急
跟你们这些宏大的
站在高处振臂一呼的
忧国忧民者相比
我就是负责这种
微末的细节的进步的

BROKEN SHOES
 
In Mao times
I think every work unit
had a loose woman.
They have been rehabilitated
since then and in literature
they are not vilified any more
(including my writing).
But where my parents worked,
the zoology department where I grew up
they also had
a broken shoe as they say.
Young male students in tow
throughout the years.
Snatching for foreign novels
just like my mother,
and for Today magazine when it was new.
When I distributed First Line
I gave her bulk copies.
Upper body forever up high,
lower body forever laid low.
More than anyone she lived modernity.
But she had fate at her neck,
for a bad woman bad mother bad wife
there could be no mercy.
My father has visited the department
and brought news about her.
Her husband is ailing,
both sons died from drugs
and she’s going crazy.

《破鞋传》
 
毛时代
似乎每个单位里
都有一个公认的破鞋
时代已为她们平反了
文学也不再把她们
当作反面人物
（其中包括我的文学）
我父母供职
我打小长大的动物所
也有那么一个
专办她的男徒弟
一路走来
不同年代
永远年轻的男徒弟
在那荒芜的年代里
与我妈同为外国小说控
最早传阅过《今天》
我还散给她《一行》
上半身永远向上
下半身永远向下
比谁活得都现代文明
只是命运对她紧追不放
对一个坏女人坏妻子坏母亲的惩罚
毫不手软
父亲回了趟单位
带回她的近况
丈夫病危
二子死于吸毒
她已经快疯了

MALL-SHOW MC
 
She is the most beautiful woman
on the bus.
 
After she gets on she keeps watching
a video on her phone.
 
In the video she sees herself
presenting a show in a mall.
 
She follows herself to learn her own words,
her voice loud and clear.
 
She gets close to the door beforehand
waiting to get off.
 
But when the bus stops
she is very focused on memorizing.
 
The bus drives on, then suddenly
she cries out,”Driver, stop the bus!”
 
The bus doesn’t stop.
Her face lights up with a radiant smile.
 
“Sorry! sorry!
It was my fault! My fault! …”

《商场主持人》
 
她是这辆公交车上
最漂亮的女人
 
上车后一直拿着手机
在看视频
 
视频里也是她
在主持一个商场秀
 
她随着她在背主持词
声音朗朗
 
她早早来到车门前
等待下车
 
车到站时
她却背得正起劲
 
车开出一段后
她忽然叫道：＂司机，停车！＂
 
车没有停
一抹灿烂的笑容绽满她的脸
 
＂对不起！对不起！
怪我！怪我！怪我⋯⋯＂

Snow has fallen.
All these beautiful snowmen,
they are all over my social media.
In flower beds by the door to my classrooms
I see a tiny and very ugly overturned
aborted embryo.

COMPOUND TIME BOARD
 
Purple Jade Garden,
the compound I live in,
has three ways of entrance:
east, middle and west.
Only at the west entrance
they’ve set up a sign with a clock.
Looks like the official time of the compound.
As I’m writing this poem,
it is Tuesday, January 9, 2018, 10 pm exactly.
The time on the sign
is Wednesday, January 10, 2018, 3:20 am.
I have been living here for nine years.
All this time we’ve been ahead of Beijing,
5 hours and 20 minutes.
In these nine years, property management has changed four times.
The clock hasn’t changed.
In these nine years I’ve been afraid
of looking too much at that clock.
Thank god this summer we’re moving.

只有西入口
安装了一个计时牌
显得像本小区的
官方计时牌
在我写作本诗的
2018年1月9日星期二22点整
它显示的是
2018年1月10日星期三3点20分
我在这个小区已经住了九年
九年来它一直领先于北京时间
5小时20分
九年中换了四荐物业
计时牌没有丝毫改变
九年中我怕看见它
多看一眼心中就多一分烦
好在今年夏天我就要搬走了

In Albanian movies
we saw kissing and hugging for the first time.
In Romanian movies
we saw the first woman in a bikini.
In North Korean and Vietnamese movies
we saw the cruelty of war,
but they also had romance and song.
Tell the children
only in our socialism
first you’re dirt poor then you starve to death.
