10 YEARS – NPC
10 years ago, Yi Sha 伊沙 began to present one poem each day on Chinese social media. This has become a representative collection of new poetry in the new century, aptly named NPC, New Poetry Canon
Eight years ago I began to look for NPC poems each day, translating more and more into German and English. In 2014 my own poetry appeared on NPC for the first time. After two books of Yi Sha’s poetry, I have now published, along with Juliane Adler, the first book of a 4-volume-series of NPC poetry in Chinese and German. Here are the contents:

Yi Sha
WINTER
On my way to the vegetable supermarket
in our compound
I see a small girl
on a big rock at the artificial lake
right above the ice going to
jump!
I am shouting:
„Don’t jump! Danger!“
But in this time
she has jumped already,
lightly,
safely
landing on the thick surface.
She turns around to me,
makes a ballet move
and becomes a small white swan.
Translated by MW, 4/3/2021
Yi Sha
WINTER
Ich geh zum Gemüsesupermarkt
in der Wohnhausanlage,
seh auf dem Weg ein kleines Mädchen
auf einem Felsen am künstlichen See,
sie will auf das Eis hinunter
springen!
Ich schrei:
„Achtung! Nicht springen!“
aber in der Zeit
ist sie schon gesprungen,
ganz leicht
und sicher
auf dem festen Eis gelandet.
Sie dreht sich zu mir um
in einer Bewegung aus dem Ballett
und wird ein kleiner weißer Schwan.

NPC steht für New Poetry Canon, eigentlich New Century Poetry Canon,

einmal anschauen
wenn ich ein großer dichter sein will
muss ich mit großen augen
hinstarren bis mir die augen rot werden
an der chinesischen klagemauer
lass mich weinen

INNERE NARBE

Zhou Fangru
SINGLE WOMAN
At Hangzhou Xiaoshan airport
going through security,
they pat everyone down from head to toe,
including the crotch,
and you take off your shoes, they pat the soles of your feet.
When it was my turn,
I felt like crying all over my face,
don’t know how long it has been
since someone touched me this way.

Pan Xichen
EGAL WIE KALT ES WIRD DER HIMMEL ERFRIERT NICHT
Egal wie kalt es wird,
der Himmel erfriert nicht.
Das hab ich mir dieses Jahr vorgesagt,
und nächstes Jahr werd ichs auch sagen.
Selbst wenn ich eines Tags
erfroren sein mag
und nichts mehr sagen kann,
auch das ist dann
der Wille des Himmels.

Guo Dong
DEKAMERON

20
20 years ago I wrote my first Chinese poem.
It was in Chongqing. “Wanbao, wanbao!”
That’s what they cry, all over China. Every afternoon.
“Evening news, evening news!”
Evening paper, every town has one.
Some have morning papers, those are called Zaobao,
most of them.
“Get your evening paper!”
Anyway, “wanbao, wanbao!”
could mean late retribution. Bào, what comes back, gets back,
a report. Wan, late. Zao, early.
“Wanbao, wanbao!”
Chongqing was the wartime capital.
Jiefang bei, liberation monument, is the city center.
It’s not from 1945 or 1949,
it’s from the 1930s or so.
Most people don’t know exactly.
Emancipation column. One of my students called it that.
Kang Di, think it was her.
Emancipation in German means women’s lib.
“Emanzipationssäule”.
I was teaching German.
Women’s Liberation Monument.
Women’s Rights Monument.
She didn’t know emancipation means many things.
Didn’t want to correct her.
Another essay was about marriage.
Were they really so conservative, our elders,
when they married a stranger,
when they slept with a stranger they had never seen before?
Good question.
Good essays, especially the girls, the young women.
“Wanbao, wanbao!”
In Beijing it sounded more like “wanbo!”, although Beijing supposedly
is where Mandarin comes from.
“Wanbao, wanbao!”
Chongqing is a hilly city. No bicycles. What did they do, back in the 1960s,
1970s, ’80s, when no-one had a car?
They had porters, for the steep slopes with the stairs,
I guess they’re still there.
“Bang-bang”, people for hire.
They bang on their tools, bang their tools together.
Bang-bang are men, but there are women porters.
Hong Ying’s mother carried sand, rocks and gravel.
Daughter of Hunger, her most famous book.
Daughter of the River in English, it was a bestseller.
Hungry Daughter, Ji’e de nü’er.
That’s right, they have a “ü”, just like in German,
and like in Turkish. Ürümqi, city in China,
nowadays governed like North Korea.
Many re-education camps. They had prisons in Chongqing,
Liao Yiwu was in there,
another famous writer from China.
Didn’t know him then. But Chongqing is about war and imprisonment.
Lieshimu, that’s the address
of our university. We taught German and English.
Two universities, one foreign languages,
the other law and police. Law and politics. Yes, they are not separated.
“Wanbao, wanbao!” No zaobao in Chongqing,
although I’m not sure now.
Lie-shi-mu, Martyr’s Grave.
Geleshan, Gele Mountain, right behind our college,
other side of the train tracks.
Someone was murdered there, some gambling debt.
Students died, one or two every few months.
Nice walks on Geleshan, very peaceful, really.
“Wanbao, wanbao!” Every city in China.
Nowadays people have cell phones,
but there are printed newspapers and magazines.
And printed books, there is no crisis.
“Wanbao, wanbao!” Late reports, late reports.
From the guns. Or whatever.
Karma. Shan means good, doing good.
A Buddhist word. Shan you shanbao,
doing good has good returns.
Wouldn’t that be nice?
But teachers believe it, teachers and parents,
again and again, otherwise you go crazy.
They went crazy too, war and famine,
all the way till 1961, ’62. When Hong Ying was born.
No, also 1969,
Cultural Revolution, like civil war.
Shan you shan-bao,
good deeds, good returns.
“Shan you shanbao, e you e-bao.”
E like in Urgh! Like something disgusting, that’s what it means.
Ur yow ur-pow, something like that. But more like b.
Eh yow e-bao. Yes, “e” like ur. “You” like yo-uw.
Shàn you shànbào, è you èbao.
Do good for good returns, do bad stuff for bad returns.
Not that it doesn’t come back, time isn’t ripe.
That’s how it goes on.
You throw the boomerang, boomerang doesn’t come back,
they tell you wait, it’ll come back.
Karma.
And so I wrote a Buddhist newspaper poem.
Bu shì bu bào, shíhou wei dào.
Wei like in Ai Weiwei, “ei” like in Beijing.
Wei means not yet, that’s his name. Really.
“Wei” like the future.
His father was the most famous Communist poet
of the People’s Republic. Imprisoned in the 1930s,
maybe in Chongqing. Then again under Mao.
Exiled to Xinjiang, North Korea today, re-education camps.
Desert, somewhere between Dunhuang and Ürümqi,
what was the town? It’s a big city now.
Ai Weiwei grew up in a hole in the ground, with his brother.
They are both artists. Anyway, where was I?
Bu shì bu bào, shíhou wei dào.
Not that it doesn’t come back, time isn’t ripe.
Emancipation monument.
MLK day, I have a dream.
They had to memorize the whole speech,
in schools in China, 1970s.
Maybe earlier too, maybe till now.
Good deeds, good returns.
Bad deeds, bad returns.
The Chinese Dream.
Not that it doesn’t come back.
Zao you zaobao, wan you wanbao.
Morning has morning papers, evening has evening news.
Early deeds, early returns.
Late deeds, late returns.
Late returns after gambling.
Famous party secretary, famous police chief,
they are in prison now. Or one is dead?
Killed a British guy, now they imprison Canadians.
Anyway, my poem.
Wanbao, wanbao!
Wanbao, wanbao!
Zao you zaobao,
wan you wanbao.
Bushi bu bao, shihou wei dao.
Actually the saying goes on, the Buddhist Karma.
Once time is ripe, everything comes back.
You don’t need to say that. People know.

Shen Haobo
A CHATEAU IN BORDEAUX
the owner introduces us
to their merlot
he is a christian
he says this red wine is Jesus’s blood
at this I hear from outside the windows
the vines all around on the hillsides
raising their gnarled hands, chanting together:
no, it’s our blood!

ROOM SERVICE
Are you from room service?
Translate into Spanish:
all-inclusive service,
gagged,
biting,
reading stories,
contemporary historical service,
service in the times of the cholera.
Voluntary,
involuntary man-service
in the name of the lord
of the manor
and the overlord
of the hotel chain
in the interests of
the all-Europe hotel
short story competition
and so on.
Make a story
out of who stayed
in Regensburg
before sunrise,
before sunset,
after Ethan Hawke,
what was the name of the bar,
something with Max.
Different city?
No, we’re not mad,
we’re very glad
we found this hotel
at the end of December.
The local paper says
these are six precious days
not including Christmas
to recuperate.
No tourists,
Merry-Turks- street,
what a wonderful place.
Pustet is a very good bookstore.
Better than some biggest book shops in bigger cities.
Churches are free,
just like the thousand year old bridge
with its museum. This used to be
one of two biggest cities in Germany.
They are building a synagogue.
A place of hope. End of a year.
Not a good one.
Re-education camps. War on terror, they say.
War on the people. Not a good story.
Are you from room service?
Please translate into Spanish
and Catalan:
Who translates into English?
Anyway, I write poems.
Some are good stories,
like Mosque And Casino.
I wrote it years ago in Chinese.

ZUM JAHRESWECHSEL
vor zwei jahren wars noch ganz anders,
ein paar anwälte wurden verschwunden.
heute sinds hunterttausende, eine million.
nicht nur anwälte, einfache leute,
männer und frauen,
kinder kommen ins waisenhaus.
wieviele kinder
stecken in lagern im freien westen,
etwa in texas.
manche stecken in lagern, manche ertrinken.
manche frieren, manche hungern sogar, einfach in europa,
weil politiker sparen.
und seit vielen jahren ist krieg.
vor vielen jahren war vieles anders,
vor zwanzig jahren war krieg in europa.
hunderttausende tote, vertriebene.
konzentrationslager in jugoslawien.
wir habens gut. viele von uns halt.
manchmal ist in einem jahr alles anders.

AUTOZUG
Neben uns fährt ein zug
mit lauter autos.
Zuerst seh ich nur den ersten stock,
eine lange schlange alle fahren nach hinten
perfekt synchron,
ein bisschen langsamer als unser zug.
Zwei etagen ganz neue wagen,
bei manchen sind die türen verklebt,
die wirken ein bisschen weniger neu.
Alles sehr unpersönlich,
fast geisterhaft,
kein einziger mensch.
Vielleicht sitzt auch niemand

PENSION
der alte dünne müllmann
wird 60, 70 sein
jeden Tag in der früh
steht er bei der recyclinghütte
von unserer anlage.

will etwas wegwerfen
kommt er höflich entgegen.
“geben sie’s mir zuerst, danke!”
sorgfältig sucht er,
was man verkaufen kann,
getränkeflaschen, kartons und papier.

Bingxue Mei
HOSPITAL SELF-REGISTRATION MACHINE
The woman waiting before me
very nervously
spreads the large 100 yuan bills
clutched in her hand,
one after the other
feeding the mouth of the machine.
That mouth isn’t big,
but it has swallowed
each of those old red Mao heads.
She looks at me, nervous and helpless.
— “This how you do it?”
— “This how it works?”
Yes. This is it.
Let us all come together,
3 bows 9 kowtows before this cold majesty.
Pray after it has filled its belly,
it’ll work magic.
Heal our wounds, end our pain,
let hearts and spirits be calm again.

Acceptance speech for the People’s Literature 2018 Translation prize

Ein Moment! Das sind acht bis zehn Stunden.
Einmal Mama ruft zum Essen,
Ein Moment! Das sind zehn bis zwanzig Sekunden.

das sind ungefähr zwei drei Stunden.

first dig up the grave

three-edged opens the coffin
come happiness bolts up cries out

HEAVEN’S QUESTIONS
The Peruvian poetess Momo
adds me on Wechat
and has a chat with me.
She asks what I do for a living.
I say I’m a policeman.
She fires off three urgent questions:
Have you taken part in forced evictions?
Have you violated human rights?
Why do you want to be a policeman?
I am a little taken aback
but then I answer truthfully:
I have never evicted anyone
etc. etc.
She professes
extreme disbelief
and says as if to herself:
Sorry,
I cannot
have this contact with a policeman.
So I’m on her blacklist.Oct. 11, 2018
