10 YEARS – NPC
10 years ago, Yi Sha 伊沙 began to present one poem each day on Chinese social media. This has become a representative collection of new poetry in the new century, aptly named NPC, New Poetry Canon
Eight years ago I began to look for NPC poems each day, translating more and more into German and English. In 2014 my own poetry appeared on NPC for the first time. After two books of Yi Sha’s poetry, I have now published, along with Juliane Adler, the first book of a 4-volume-series of NPC poetry in Chinese and German. Here are the contents:

Yi Sha
WINTER
On my way to the vegetable supermarket
in our compound
I see a small girl
on a big rock at the artificial lake
right above the ice going to
jump!
I am shouting:
„Don’t jump! Danger!“
But in this time
she has jumped already,
lightly,
safely
landing on the thick surface.
She turns around to me,
makes a ballet move
and becomes a small white swan.
Translated by MW, 4/3/2021
Yi Sha
WINTER
Ich geh zum Gemüsesupermarkt
in der Wohnhausanlage,
seh auf dem Weg ein kleines Mädchen
auf einem Felsen am künstlichen See,
sie will auf das Eis hinunter
springen!
Ich schrei:
„Achtung! Nicht springen!“
aber in der Zeit
ist sie schon gesprungen,
ganz leicht
und sicher
auf dem festen Eis gelandet.
Sie dreht sich zu mir um
in einer Bewegung aus dem Ballett
und wird ein kleiner weißer Schwan.

NPC-Anthologie
Band 1: A–J
NPC stands for New Poetry Canon, or New Century Poetry Canon 新世纪诗典, presented by Yi Sha 伊沙 in Chinese social media each day since spring 2011. NPC outside of poetry is National People’s Congress, China’s parliament that convenes in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing for two weeks each March. Yi Sha’s NPC poem of the day on Sina Weibo 新浪微博, Tencent WeChat 微信 and other platforms gets clicked, forwarded, commented 10,000 times or more, each day. Each year a book comes out, about every week there are events in Xi’an, Beijing and many, many places all over China and beyond. All produced independently from among the people 民间, not by any state organizations. This book contains poems by 81 poets listed below. This is the first volume (A-J) in a series of four books. NPC steht für New Poetry Canon, eigentlich New Century Poetry Canon,

wieviele waren
bei trost oder was
wieviele waren am sonntag
wahrscheinlich ist es auch nicht entscheidend
im stadtpark wär ich auch gern gewesen
josef hader paul gulda
es war heiß
vielleicht der letzte heiße sonntag im sommer
also stadionbad
alte bäume
manche zweihundert jahre
irgendwo hinten kannst fussballspielen

FLOWERS
I am still praying for Paris
ten days later
I pray for Vienna
next to the French consulate
is the Soviet monument
I pass it in streetcar D
there are wreaths at the monument every year
there are flowers all around the consulate
second time this year
every time it gets cold
mass graves detected again in Iraq
this time elderly women
who could not be sold easily
according to Facebook
probably accurate
the Soviet monument to peace in Europe
lots of Greek columns
inscribed by Stalin
and a big fountain
with water straight from the alps
the architect of the aqueduct
that keeps Vienna alive
lets it bloom again and again
was a Jew

BLUMEN
ich bete auch heute noch für paris
zehn tage später
ich bete für wien
neben dem französischen konsulat
liegt das russendenkmal
ich fahre im d-wagen vorbei
am denkmal gibt es jedes jahr kränze
am konsulat sind rundherum blumen
zum zweiten mal in diesem jahr
jedesmal wenn es kalt wird
wieder massengräber entdeckt im irak
diesmal ältere frauen
jedenfalls laut facebook
es wird schon stimmen
das russendenkmal ist sehr pathetisch
in griechischen formen
mit texten von stalin
und einem brunnen
der kommt aus den alpen
der architekt der wasserleitung
die wien am leben erhält
und immer wieder zum blühen bringt
war ein jude

SMOKING
I smoke a cigarette
under a street light
and the cigarette
is smoking me.
We are two smokers
don’t need any language
we are connected
just in this way.
Smoking each other
smoke curling up
in strands and spirals
glistering, swaying
sparkling grey whips.
I am smiling
standing
at the same time
I connect
with the next cigarette
fish out my lighter
and
have a cold
shudder.

LONELY BEER BOTTLES
every hot night watching the Europe cup
I need a few beers in the fridge
let them get chilled
later when the time is ripe
I take them out
and open their caps.
They heave a sigh like they do every time.
Then I watch the game
and finish the beer all the way.
At intermission
I go to the bathroom.
At this time, there are only
these few empty bottles
left standing.
Through the glass
they watch commercials.

ax watching
his face
skinny, dried up
all his life
waiting to chop
people who part their hair in the middle

RIDER’S INN
he sees in his dream
a few merry thieves
jumping out of himself
and some hired thugs
they each have a smoke
they buy some provisions and pickled vegetables
they make it back into his body
before he wakes up

WIEN, HELDENPLATZ
ich war in einer funktion hier
als demonstrant
und als konzertgeher
am tag der befreiung
dürfen die rechten
nicht mehr marschieren
am abend spielen symphoniker
noch nicht so lang
unfertig, verloren
vom heldenplatz sieht man den flakturm.
so endet simon winders danubia
gebt ihnen allen ganz schnelle wagen. einsame landstraßen.
die polizei darf alles absperren. die ganze innenstadt.
jedenfalls wo protestiert werden könnte.
einkesseln. jagen. mitnehmen. anklagen.
landfriedensbruch. auch wenn li peng kommt.
kroch hitler aus den ruinen von habsburg?
welche ruinen? besuchszeiten sind
alles ist wunderbar renoviert
das völkerkundemuseum
heißt jetzt irgendwie anders. etwas von welt.
der glanze heldenplatz zirka.

Yu Lang
brandneue werkstatt, beschichtetes blech
erstickender rauch im engen raum
dein körper ganz klein auf einer tragbahre
ein paar schneeflocken treiben
ein treibendes nieseln
ununterbrochen fahren die wagen
hin und her auf den straßen
alter kerl aus sichuan
pflegt ein grab eines kanzlers der song-dynastie
abgesehen davon dringt keine nachricht heraus
in huichuan an der kreuzung
weint jemand
andere flüstern
noch jemand schreibt für dich:
mädchen — was ist mit dir?

3 uhr in der früh
ich geh durch den torkelnden wohnblock
und seh einen hund
den schwanz eingezogen
die nase am boden
ich werf ihm einen fleischfladen hin
aber er saust davon!
“Hund beisst Lü Dongbin!”
schimpf ich ihm nach
bück mich und heb
den fleischfladen auf
werf ihn in eine tonne
dann fällt mir ein

MY SON WRITING POETRY
after my son wrote his first poem
after I went through six poems
he wrote in one month
with the most critical eye
I think I could muster
when I firmly believed
he had what it takes
I sighed with relief
raised my head
discovered this world
had improved very much
in this very moment
I lost my anger, my fighting spirit
no angry words deep down in my heart
I was loosing my balance
stretched out my hands
for something to grab
something to hold onto

This is a very good article. One of the few very inspiring responses to these horrible attacks in Paris. I was involved in another response – I translated a text by Liao Yiwu 廖亦武, a Chinese writer in exile in Germany. I put it in a blog post here some two weeks ago, along with words by “Charb” from Charlie Hebdo and others. Liao Yiwu’s text first appeared in German in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. It is also available in English, on the website of the German Book Trade Organization. This response should equally be read by as many people as possible! Thank you very much, Soh Wee Ling! I went demonstrating in Vienna on January 11, and again on Friday, January 30, when the xenophobe Neo-Nazis had their ball in the historic halls of the Hofburg in Vienna, overlooking the Heldenplatz where Hitler spoke to eradicate Austria in 1938, cheered by thousands. We were around 5000-6000 at least all over the centre of Vienna, although the police had cordoned off a large area and many people had been arrested and criminalized last year. No windows broken this time, and hardly anyone injured. Some people always get angry, and there are Neo-Nazi sympathizers in the police and in parliament. And they have been tolerated and cosseted, and they were in government 2000-2006. Recently an editor of the newspaper Der Standard, which has been very much against the fascists, has actually suggested that the Social Democrats should consider working with the F-Party. In Germany, their slogans would not be allowed, and some of their leaders would be in prison. On the other hand, we have a cherished tradition of fierce satire in Austria. I read an article by the Jewish French-German writer Gina Lustiger, published in Die Welt. She also said, just like you Soh Wee Ling, that the Charlie Hebdo cartoons were aimed at the average French citizens, including the cartoonists themselves. She said she missed them very much, missed their incisive humour. And she emphasized that unless the French Jewish victims were equally respected, even if their relatives had them buried abroad, people had not understood what this was about. Unless you can imagine Charlie as a Turkish woman in a head scarf at a funeral in Jerusalem, she said. Thank you very much again!

ZHAO LIHONG
Went to a search engine,
searched for my name.
Found out on renren.com,
there are 53 people
called Zhao Lihong.
16.67% of them are from the north.
22.22% are born in the nineties,
62.22% are male.
I want all these people,
these Zhao Lihongs
to come together,
to hear us shout it together,
our own name,
Zhao Lihong,
Zhao Lihong.
To hear us calling each other,
each calling the name
Zhao Lihong;
to hear one Zhao Lihong
call another Zhao Lihong;
to hear an old Zhao Lihong
call for a young Zhao Lihong.
Hear a boy Zhao Lihong
call a girl Zhao Lihong,
hear a north Zhao Lihong
call for a south
Zhao Lihong.
To hear a
public security guy Zhao Lihong
call a teacher

BAUMAUGEN
baumaugen
wachsen nicht nur unter der stirn
(es ist nicht kulturell festgelegt
wieviele ein baum haben darf
also hat er ebenso viele
wie er grad mag)
sie passen auch nicht zueinander
(es gibt keine muster
sie stellen sich nicht in ein rechteck)
und strahlen auch nicht
(sie blinzeln eher
wie alte hündinnen
ihnen rinnen die tränen)
sie haben wimpern
(ein kurzer vorhang,
kauf nicht soviel stoff)
und schlaf in den augen
warten auf käfer, die machen sauber
(vögel oben am nasenrücken
putzen die käfer weg)
baumaugen
größer als kuhaugen
deshalb erschrecken sie
kinder, die spielen
in bäumen verstecken

Was mich wirklich traurig macht

KNITTING MILL
I was in second year junior high
mother sent father to our country high school
to take me straight to the village-run knitting mill
they promised me
if elder sister wouldn’t make it to college
she’d come to work at the mill so I could
go on and study
it meant only one sister
could go to school
fate didn’t favor my sister
fell short a few points at the entrance exam
I went back to school, made it to Jinan in Shandong
sister worked and got married
had a stillbirth, got poisoned from pesticides
she killed herself
raising the past for the nth time at dinner table
mother says you all don’t have it worst
it’s the truth who had it worst vanished in smoke

Man tut was man kann.
Gerichte mit Brimsen sind wirklich nicht schlecht.
Das Hotel ist sehr schön.

BRATISLAVA (Pressburg, Poszony, Little Big City)
morning sun not yet strong –
light spilled over the town.
a little snow.
the city’s broken, somehow.
the town is still there.
birds alive on the hills –
a mass read in latin.
beethoven sung here every two years –
jewish museum across the highway.
you do what you can.
very nice dishes with cheese –
the hotel’s rather good.

DREAM #203
I am on an iron ladder
on the side of a tall building
I’m facing outside
stepping down slowly
outside of my dreams
I’m not at all afraid of heights
but in this dream
my hands and feet are cold with fear
I’m risking a look
down to what I call
mother earth in my poems
getting dizzy
wanting to fall, headlong
gingerly feeling my way
step by step
finally
losing my feet
but – I’m still okay
because by now
it’s not more than a man’s height to the ground
lightly and softly
my feet touching down
