IM KAMPF
Vater und meine zwei Onkel,
meine zwei Cousins von den zwei Onkeln und ich.
Sechs Mann von unserer Familie
im Kampf auf dem Friedhof.
Unsere Gegner sind jedes Jahr
zum Gräbertag, zum Geisterfest
zu Neujahr im Mondkalender
das Grab vom Opa,
die Gräber von drei Großonkeln,
von Oma und Opa auf Vaterseite.
Letztes Jahr
ist Vater zum Gegner übergewechselt,
unser Hauptmann ist im neuen Grab.
Ich zieh aus zum Kampf
und spür sogar etwas wie Stolz.
Einer unter den Feinden
gehört mir allein.

DOG FOOD
On Sunday
I went to visit Director Ma,
bought two packs of dog food
at the store in his building.
In his apartment
I take out the dog food from my bag.
The director is very surprised
he says brother,
you have a heart!

THE VIEW
the view
from the little window
in the staircase
is like a camera.
It’s a little cold.
The picture is magnificent,
but you feel the draft.
You can’t take it with you
wherever you’ll go,
but why would you want to?

Ma Fei
IM KOPF
In Kanton
hat mir Xiang Lianzi erzählt
sie hat Patienten
die sind schon zig Jahre alt
aber vom Verstand her vier oder fünf.
Sie hat ein Experiment gemacht
und ihnen Gedichte vorgelesen.
Von alten Versen waren sie verzaubert,
sie haben mit Händen und Füßen getanzt.
Bei modernen Gedichten
haben sie entweder nicht reagiert
oder sie sind beunruhigt geworden.
Während sie es erzählt hat
wollt ich schon aufspringen
und hab ihr aufgeregt vorgeschlagen
sie muss darüber schreiben.
Jetzt ist ein Monat vorbei,
ich denk immer daran,
vielleicht hat sie schon etwas geschrieben.

SHEEP-SPLITTING
A friend came from Ordos
and brought me a lamb.
The lamb’s head, the skin and the entrails
remained in Ordos.
The body, the legs and the feet
stuffed in a snakeskin bag
got shipped to Huainan.
The sheep skin burns in the sun,
the body sits in an icebox.
Legs tremble in Huainan，
the entrails quiver in Ordos.
The head bleats on the grasslands,
hoofs streak over concrete.

Mr. Lu, in charge for the emperor,
retired and built a family temple,
which became my primary school.
Our desks were made from the coffins
down in his grave.
That campaign was called
Smash The Four Olds!
I was often late,
like the great Lu Xun,
and also like him carved a 早
the character for “early”,
with my pocket knife into the rosewood.

Ich kam oft zu spät zum Unterricht.
Und wie der Dichter Lu Xun
schnitzte ich mit meinem Taschenmesser
in mein Pult aus Mahagoni
das Zeichen für “früh”.
