WANG WEI
His name is actually
Wang Youwei.
Literally that means
King with a tail,
or Wang with a tail.
He is a poet
in today’s Xi’an.
Wang Wei is the great
Tang dynasty poet.
His grave is outside of Xi’an,
the former Tang dynasty capital Chang’an,
in a somewhat derelict factory.
The factory makes
something for spaceflight,
so it is secret,
big signs anounce that.
There is a roadside restaurant
called Wang Wei’s Grave.
It belongs to the factory.
In a galaxy far, far away,
we all sneaked in together,
to recite poetry
under the tree
that Wang Wei planted
thirteen hundred years ago
or so.
It was a great dynasty
in retrospect.
That’s why I call
Wang Youwei
Wang Wei,
I just can’t help it.

西毒何殇译
他的名字其实是
王有尾。
字面意思是
长着尾巴的国王，
或者有条尾巴的王。
他是一个诗人
在今天的西安。
王维是伟大的
唐代诗人。
他的坟墓在西安郊外，
即唐朝的都城长安，
一座有些荒废的工厂里
这家工厂制造
航天的玩意儿，
所以它是机密，
大标识明示了这一点。
有一家路边餐厅
叫“王维墓”。
它属于工厂。
在一个遥远的星系，
我们一起溜进去
读诗
在王维
大约一千三百年前
亲手栽种的
树下。
回想起来
这是一个伟大的王朝。
这就是为什么我把
王有尾叫作
王维
我就是忍不住。

汉语先锋·2021年度最佳诗歌100首｜维马丁《致西毒何殇》入选理由：又是一首外国人用中文写的诗，来自奥地利诗人、翻译家维马丁。这首诗非常中国，读来竟有某种中国古典诗歌的意境。一首短短的致友诗，其中包含着多重难以名状的情绪，有对友情的怀念，有对昔日不再有的怅惘，有对时代的忧伤，有对丢失事物的缅怀，有祝福，有叹息，娓娓道来，融为一体，万般滋味，化作绕指柔。其中有妙笔，尤其扣人心弦——“在那棵树下，我们多小。”(磨铁读诗会)

Es ist eine andere Zeit.
Der Baum
steht wahrscheinlich noch dort,
wir Menschen von damals
sind noch am Leben,
aber mir kommt vor
wir haben etwas verloren,
und zwar nicht nur die Jahre.

黄平子，男，70后，中学教师，在《新世纪诗典》、《磨铁读诗会》、《诗快报》等发表作品。磨铁读诗会2020年度汉语十佳诗人。写作是一种编码的过程，阅读是一种解码的过程。首先，要感谢磨铁，感谢沈浩波，里所，后乞。《夏天》先在磨铁读诗会选用。磨铁的肯定，增加了我投稿新世纪诗典的信心。其次，感谢伊沙，感谢他的选稿，感谢他在新世纪诗典4000首大关这个重要节点推荐《夏天》。第三，感谢《夏天》的评论者，翻译者，推荐者。《夏天》是写母亲的，也不仅仅写母亲。《夏天》是写童年记忆的，记忆里有苦痛，又不仅仅是苦痛。我喜欢夏天，喜欢夏天的热。在最热的夏天，我也不戴草帽，一任炎热的太阳晒出我的汗，晒脱我的皮。我一直很怕冷，夏天很好，不用愁没有衣服穿，大不了打赤膊。夏天是农村的收获季节。水稻在夏天成熟，花生在夏天成熟，西瓜在夏天成熟……虽然夏天忙得人直不起腰来，但是忙过了就有吃，有什么不好呢？我的老家太窝要山没山，要水没水。我们一家人就靠几亩薄地糊口。我父亲结扎后身体不好，家里的活大多由母亲做。在农村，割稻子是最辛苦的事。头顶有烈日，脚下有泥水。水稻的长叶子上长着锯齿，像一把把小锯子。一发稻子割下来，脸上、手上，到处都是血口子。稻子上还有细细的绒毛，沾到身上，有说不出的痒。天太热，湿答答的衣服又捂出了一身痱子……这让人又爱又恨的夏天啊！2022年3月16日20点43分

西毒河殇
脸书告诉我
你今天不惑，
祝贺你！
去年你写诗非常好，
写了长篇小说，
看起来很棒！
脸书拿出来
我们当时合影，
在王维墓，
那棵大树之前
在那棵树下
我们多小！
我们都玩得很好，
都写了诗。
两年过了，
好像十年了，
时代不同了。

10 YEARS – NPC十岁了！
10 years ago, Yi Sha 伊沙 began to present one poem each day on Chinese social media. This has become a representative collection of new poetry in the new century, aptly named NPC, New Poetry Canon 新世纪诗典.
Eight years ago I began to look for NPC poems each day, translating more and more into German and English. In 2014 my own poetry appeared on NPC for the first time. After two books of Yi Sha’s poetry, I have now published, along with Juliane Adler, the first book of a 4-volume-series of NPC poetry in Chinese and German. Here are the contents:

WINTER
On my way to the vegetable supermarket
in our compound
I see a small girl
on a big rock at the artificial lake
right above the ice going to
jump!
I am shouting:
„Don’t jump! Danger!“
But in this time
she has jumped already,
lightly,
safely
landing on the thick surface.
She turns around to me,
makes a ballet move
and becomes a small white swan.

seh auf dem Weg ein kleines Mädchen
auf einem Felsen am künstlichen See,
sie will auf das Eis hinunter

„Achtung! Nicht springen!“
aber in der Zeit
ist sie schon gesprungen,
ganz leicht
und sicher
auf dem festen Eis gelandet.

Yi Sha, orig. name Wu Wenjian. Well-known poet, writer, critic, translator, editor. Born in 1966 in Chengdu, lives in Xi’an. Graduated from Beijing Normal University in 1989. Has written over 20,000 poems, published, translated and edited 122 books. Received the Henry Luce prize for contemporary Chinese poetry and many other awards. Invited to poetry festivals in China, Sweden, England, Netherlands, South Korea etc., incl. the 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th Qinghai Lake international poetry festival, the 50th Struga poetry festival in Macedonia and many more. Vermont Studio Center fellow 2014. NPC stands for New Poetry Canon, or New Century Poetry Canon 新世纪诗典, presented by Yi Sha 伊沙 in Chinese social media each day since spring 2011. NPC outside of poetry is National People’s Congress, China’s parliament that convenes in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing for two weeks each March. Yi Sha’s NPC poem of the day on Sina Weibo 新浪微博, Tencent WeChat 微信 and other platforms gets clicked, forwarded, commented 10,000 times or more, each day. Each year a book comes out, about every week there are events in Xi’an, Beijing and many, many places all over China and beyond. All produced independently from among the people 民间, not by any state organizations. This book contains poems by 81 poets listed below. This is the first volume (A-J) in a series of four books. Compiled and edited by Juliane Adler and Martin Winter, translated by Martin Winter.

Fireworks for the ancestors
at Tomb-Sweeping Day were too loud,

TIME
My best time for writing poetry
was when I had time,
when I had all the time in the world
and nary a care.
I had time enough to read
Yu Hua’s every novel and many stories,
just because of the feel of his language
and Republic of Wine by Mo Yan
and Gao Xingjian, all in Chinese.
I didn’t write many poems.
Maia was small. I had time before her.
Actually, translating more poetry
began just before Leo was born.
Anyway, we were in China
forever.

What is a poem?
A poem is something you hold
something you fold
into a bird
into an airplane
into a sword
into gold.
A poem is old.
It is new,
like the dew.
A poem is work,
a poem is play,
earth and sea,
night and day.
A poem can be
ten thousand lines
or just one vine.
A novel’s a poem,
a play
or whatever you say
if I may.
A poem must be incurably gay
must be queer
to make you fear
for your soul.
It is also bait,
it is straight
from the horse’s mouth.
A poem is your sleeping wife,

MEINE MUTTER
Sie versteht nichts von Gedichten, weiß nicht warum ich nach Shicheng fahre.
Sie plappert gern und ist ein bisschen schlampig,
wenn sie Teller wäscht, bleiben Flecken.
Sie sieht uns übrig gebliebenes Essen wegwerfen und sagt sofort
das sei eine Sünde, so schade.
Seit sie über 50 ist, hat sie angefangen
auf mich zu hören,
nimmt Medikamente wenn nötig, ruht sich aus wenn sie müd ist.
Manchmal ist sie wieder kindisch und plappert,
sagt mir bring Wäsche mit und eine Zahnbürste
und dieses Buch, das du gern hast.
Dann hält sie Yiyi und sagt, wünsch Papa gute Reise.
Ich winke, mach die Tür zu und geh.
In Shicheng kauf ich Trinkwasser,
dann merk ich erst in meiner Geldbörse
hat sie kleine Scheine hineingesteckt
die nach Sauerkraut riechen
und einen Anhänger, glitzernd und fein,
ein bisschen wie Tränen.

I am seeing Endgame,
thinking of Třebíč.
“It all ends here.”
We were in Třebíč
when the last Harry Potter came out.
We saw it in Czech in 3D
in the town’s only theatre.
Třebíč is very well preserved.
It’s a real town like so many
with a real Jewish cemetery.
They had a motorcycle convention
when we were in town in 2011.

schreiben die Leute.
Manche mit Kreide,
manche ritzen in die Steine.
Die Kreide ist eigentlich der Mörtel,
der Mörtel zwischen den Ziegeln,
der herausfällt.
Jemand schreibt “Mexico”.
Jemand schreibt “Polska”.
Jemand schreibt auf Französisch ein Datum
zum Beweis, dass er gestern hier war.
Manche schreiben ihre Namen, auch gegenseitig
mit Telefonnummern,
so etwas gibt es überall auf der Welt,
junge Leute lieben das.

Es lebe die Rote Armee,

on the Great Wall.
Some use chalk,
some carve into the stone.
The chalk is actually lime,
mortar between the bricks
that fell out.
Somone writes “Mexico”.
Someone writes “Polska”,
means he’s from Poland.
Someone writes a date in French
and proves he was here yesterday.
Some people write each other’s names,
with telephone numbers.
I saw this in many parts of the world,
teenagers love it.
And someone writes
The Red Army is great,

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE HUMAN?
what does it mean to be human?
what does it mean to be alive?
means you’re not dead yet.
means you can ask superfluous questions.

WILLST DU STROM?
Acht bis zehn Minuten
braucht der Bus für ein Dorf
auf der Bergstraße.
Die Berge auf beiden Seiten
sind dicht bestanden mit Grün
und mit Gräbern.
Gleich nachher kommt man zum Kraftwerk
oben auf dem Hang.
Ich hab immer so ein Gefühl
dass man da drin keine Kohle verbrennt
sondern menschliche Seelen
und der Strom der rauskommt
geht auch in die Seele.
Ich weiß nämlich genau
manche lehnen den Strom ab
manche fürchten den Strom
manche dürsten nach Strom.

Mr. Short & Mr. Fear
are the highest people
in government.
One of them is
a former neo-Nazi.
Mr. Short is actually tall.
Mr. Fear wears glasses now,
to look more serious
& less fearsome,
at least at first glance.
Both are very good
for Big Business.
They represent
my country.
