CRAWLING ALL OVER TO LOOK FOR THEIR TEETH – 小虾 Xiao Xia

CRAWLING ALL OVER TO LOOK FOR THEIR TEETH

Fireworks for the ancestors
at Tomb-Sweeping Day were too loud,
Elder Brother Shu’s 6000-Yuan false teeth
got shattered and knocked out of his mouth.
Eldest Brother saw what happened
and helped in the search.
Brother Shu whispered to his older brother,
smaller movements, please!
Don’t let the young ones know two local cadres
are crawling all over looking for teeth.

OYSTER SHELL WALLS – 能水 Neng Shui

七月 29, 2020

Neng Shui
OYSTER SHELL WALLS

At the water you live off the water
Ancestors who kept oysters
used oyster shells
to build wondrous walls.

I saw an intro,
you mix in clay, cane sugar, sticky rice and so on
ordinary people
could not afford that.
The walls that still stand now
are ancestral halls of a clan or some official.

Records state,
for one ancestral hall you need ten tons of shells.
Dazed and surprised
I looked to the village across from the halls.
A hundred-year-old white-haired lady
came tottering out,
like an oyster ghost who somehow survived.

WINTER CLOTHING DAY – 何婴

WINTER CLOTHING DAY

moon calendar, tenth month and first day, midnight
at the crossroads, still a few heaps of burnt paper
swaying in the cold wind
a beggar comes and kneels down, both knees on the ground,
makes a bow
to the rest of a fire
to light a cigarette

PASTA – 朱劍

PASTA

Went back to Hunan in early August,
to change my family registration,
so I can officially live in Xi’an.
Ran into an old guy from my clan,
who said, kid,
this time you rip out your roots when you go.
In Xi’an first day back
for my first meal, walked into
Great Leap’s Spinach Noodle House,
oil-sprinkled pasta.
Local people call them
Soul Returns Home.
