KRAFT DER DUNKELHEIT – 七 Qi

KRAFT DER DUNKELHEIT

Er hat beim Trinken nie Becher verwendet.
Manche Orte,
da kommt kein Licht hinein.
Wo er sitzt,
dort wird es dunkel.
Dunkelheit zieht mich an.
Ich seh wie er Bier trinkt,
eine Dose nach der anderen,
und mit der Dunkelheit
jede Dose plattdrückt.

Übersetzt von MW im November 2022

Acht Stunden gefahren,
endlich angekommen.
Tausend-Wachtürme-Land, tibetisches Dorf.
Damba, im Tal der Schönen, West-Sichuan,
unter den Sternen mit meiner Freundin.
Wir trinken Bier,
plaudern vertraut.
Am Fuß des heiligen Berges Mo’erduo,
ein Paradies.
Unsere Sorgen
hat der Wind
weggeweht über die Berge.

Zehn Tage in Wien,
österreichisches Bier
ein bisschen Heineken dazu,
ein Dutzend verschiedene Marken;
Durst ausgelebt, mehr als genug.

Auf der Rückreise mit China Southerm
gibt es auch Bier im Flugzeug,
aber nur eine Marke:
„Snowbeer – Globe Trekker“

This is the most beautiful square,
the centre of this beautiful town,
wonderful concert.
Didn’t understand one word they sang,
but they were great.
Every one had a wonderful time,
rock music in Czech,
guess they have been playing together
ten or twenty years.
I’m sure it was all their own songs
and the most classic ones at the end.
People dancing, holding their children,
people getting another beer.
The square has beer and ice cream stands
and many things for everyone.
Water taps, a tent with cushions,
restaurants and cafes
on the sides.

This was a very important town
one-hundred fifty or sixty years ago.
They filmed the movie Amadeus,
no, that was later.
They had an uprising,
a constitutional assembly
for the whole monarchy,
didn’t come through at the end.

Anyway now, they have a party.
Children play classical music
in the flower garden.
One ten- year-old could be Ian Anderson.
Two girls play like a string quartet,
hope the Blue Meanies
hold off for a while.

If you go to see the castle,
the Archbishop residence,,
where they had the filming,
the parliament, the Russian czar
and so on,
the painting gallery is actually free.
They have a Tizian,
Apollo and Marsyas.
Yes, the latter gets flayed alive.
Go see that first
before they close.

AVENGER’S ENDGAME

I am seeing Endgame,
thinking of Třebíč.
“It all ends here.”
We were in Třebíč
when the last Harry Potter came out.
We saw it in Czech in 3D
in the town’s only theatre.
Třebíč is very well preserved.
It’s a real town like so many
with a real Jewish cemetery.
They had a motorcycle convention
when we were in town in 2011.
Maybe the Travellers’ Inn is still there
by the bridge.

they take notes from Ant-Man
and travel into the past quantum realm
to thwart the Big Evil.
Thor gets a beer belly from
thinking about this.

MW October 2016

last week the brazilian author ricardo domeneck wrote a noble commentary on Facebook that actually sounds a little dylanesque, partly. masters of war, yes. dynamite. 伊沙 has a great little nobel dynamite poem. from 1992. we had a reading here in vienna on Oct. 15 in our new housing close to the new central train station. we have a library downstairs. run by people from our house, we are there often. open to other houses, gudrun and peter built a stage, and we have theatre. and we had a bob dylan night a few months ago. masters of war is a little like my poem X&Y. x was cruel/ butt is sore/ y was able/ and suave./ both loved culture/ both destroyed/ hundred million/ butts are cold. written march 2007 in beijing. yes, nixon and kissinger, mao and zhou, maybe there is a pair like that in brazil? only six or seven swedes in over 100 years of a great swedish prize for literature is actually not very much, is it? wonder if ricardo brazil/domeneck/africa ever read tomas tranströmer. oh well. pity this busy monster manunkind/ not. progress is a comfortable disease:/ your victim (death and live safely beyond) plays with the bigness of its littleness …[…] pity poor flesh and trees, poor stars and stones, but never this fine specimen …. listen: there’s a hell/ of a good universe next door. let’s go. there must be some way out of here, said the joker to the thief …

yes, the music of jimi hendrix. dylan is honored as tip of the iceberg, should be chuck berry and many others at the same time. preferably african brazilian women. yes, manunkind maybe doesn’t always deserve something poor ricardo doesn’t always get, maybe. pity. oh yes.

DALI, BOTERO

MOSQUE & CASINO

Mosque and casino
both have Adam and Eve.
The casino in Singapore
at the Botanical Garden
greets you with Dali and with Botero.
Botero’s sculptures Adam and Eve
at the gate of the casino.
What would the artist think of this sight?
Art is a rather ambivalent thing.
Poetry makes you a better person?
The mosque in Malaysia’s government district
is a sight to behold.
I am folding my hands.
An old lady asks me if I am a Muslim.
I just bow and keep silent,
so she lets me go in
and helps me taking pictures.
She sees I don’t know how to pray
so she gives me a folder and tries to explain.
There’ll be prayer time in forty minutes.
Men at the bottom, women up there.
She hopes I can make it.
The folder says
Adam and Eve were also Muslims.
Adam was the first Prophet.
The Mosque has Quran editions in English.
I flip through a section.
Allah bestows many signs on mankind.
Sleep is a sign,
along with creation
and languages and different colours.
We haven’t had enough sleep on this trip.
Soaring up with my eyes,
I think being a Muslim is good.
I know why it’s forbidden to make any idols.
Half an hour later we are drinking beer.
I am still a believer
in beauty in art.
Poetry and art are signs of Allah.

SHE HAS TO BE PERFECT

In Singapore
we have a new guide.
Her name means “swallow”.
She explains about their laws.
Sounds a bit like Thailand
talks about Buddhism.

“You have to be careful,
you can’t just sit down anywhere.”

We get in very late
but we still call a reading.
Across the street from the hotel
you can sit outside,
you can even smoke.
Long as you don’t toss the butt.
When you order a beer,
one bottle per person may be too much.

Where is the moon?
In Singapore
she obeys the law to the letter,
otherwise they beat her behind.
She steps out of the clouds
in her most perfect poise.

HEROES’ MONUMENT OF MALAYSIA

Was it a glorious thing when they died?
Did they go to war
for peace and freedom?
In World War I
In World War II
In civil war
they hardly had any choice.
In 1966
Malaysia’s prime minister had them erected
a park of monuments.
They already had one from World War I.
With names from Europe, also from India.
Probably officers.
To make this park for all those who died,
all those who gave their lives in the wars.
In 1966.
I was born in that year.
Maybe this monument
was a good idea.

DALI, BOTERO

JOURNEY TO SOUTHEAST ASIA《南行記》part 1

THE MOON IS FASTER THAN OTHER PEOPLE

people are slow here
says our guide
you have to get used to them
then it's dark in a jump
and the moon climbs very fast
to her highest position
guess she is happy
to serve Chinese tour groups
so these few years
she runs faster and faster

SLEEPING PALACE

actually the palace is very still

tourists stream in and out

serious people stay in their pictures

the palace is sleeping in history

Bangkok, January 2016

IN THE EMPORIUM OF PRECIOUS STONES

in the emporium of precious stones
there is a smoking room
looks a bit like a prison.
men who need separation
quietly gather
with their heavy hearts
just for a short spell
then go on buying things

TRANSVESTITES IN THAILAND

“some are half-demon, half-demon, half human.”

I am sure our guide is a man.

He is open-minded, just like his country.

“We in China this, China that …”

I wish his China was a real country.

VACATION

let us go diving into the deep.

last year in august someone in tianjin

said one thousand people had died.

he was put in jail.

let us go diving.

elections this year in taiwan.

first female president.

let’s go now, let’s go.

these few days someone gave an interview

voice of freedom or something

said the city he lived in

was not free

autonomous region was not autonomous.

let us go diving now.

he got fourteen years.

he wasn’t the first.

let’s go now, go.

there’ll be other things planned for the afternoon.

SMOKING

I smoke a cigarette
under a street light
and the cigarette
is smoking me.
We are two smokers
don’t need any language
we are connected
just in this way.
Smoking each other
smoke curling up
in strands and spirals
glistering, swaying
sparkling grey whips.
I am smiling
standing
at the same time
I connect
with the next cigarette
fish out my lighter
and
have a cold
shudder.

LONELY BEER BOTTLES

every hot night watching the Europe cup
I need a few beers in the fridge
let them get chilled
later when the time is ripe
I take them out
and open their caps.
They heave a sigh like they do every time.
Then I watch the game
and finish the beer all the way.
At intermission
I go to the bathroom.
At this time, there are only
these few empty bottles
left standing.
Through the glass
they watch commercials.

RIDER’S INN

he sees in his dream
a few merry thieves
jumping out of himself
and some hired thugs
they each have a smoke
they buy some provisions and pickled vegetables
they make it back into his body
before he wakes up

BIER BEI DIR DAHEIM –

Bier getrunkenShen Haobo
DRINKING BEER WITH YOUR PARENTS

Drinking beer with your parents. How long has it been?
Let us not do the math. Let’s not frighten the bats.
I remember your mother. Didn’t see her afterwards.
Your death was for her, nothing left in her life
to be proud of. You were the perfect daughter,
not only beautiful. Had to be sensible, tame.
Only when mother wasn’t around, then you ran
like a happy young deer. She could not be there when you died.

I am at your deathbed. Both your parents aren’t here.
Your two daughters are not with you. You love them,
you don’t want them to see you this way. Your husband,
your mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and your little sister
surrounding your bed, waiting for death to come down.
I am a stranger, an unexpected guest, somehow representing
the side of the bride. Your mother-in-law praises you,
says you’re her perfect daughter, perfectly fitting into their family.

Drinking beer with your parents. Summer, courtyard was steaming.
Grey tiles on the roof, broken and cool. There was no toilet,
only a vat in the ground, not separated at all.
Your father wanted me to squat on that thing. I wasn’t ready.
I remember the poverty in your family, but you were shining
in everything. Your little brother clinging to me, wanting to play
No-one knew he would grow to be such a bastard.
I am worried your husband will cut him off after you’re gone.

I am at your deathbed. It’s not your own room.
More than one dozen beds. You’re in between dying old people.
A few days ago, they put you with the dying,
with decrepit old people. Like bringing you into the morgue rather early.
You were fully awake, you wanted to live.
I saw you trying to breathe with all your might.
We all know you married a prosperous merchant,
your parents were very proud. Your husband tells me,
choking, you were the perfect wife.

Drinking beer with your parents. First time I had beer.
Your father bought beer for me. Your mother looking at me.
Where were you standing? How did you look at me?
I was too stupid to understand anything. My head was swimming,
I was with your family, I was drinking beer. I was so happy.
We both didn’t know the future. Your husband telling me
as soon as you heard the sound of his footsteps
you would run and open the door for him, putting his shoes under his feet.

I am at your deathbed. Your tug-of-war still going on.
Breath getting hoarse, thunder rolling inside you.
The last dozen hours, trying your family’s patience.
Your husband keeps on talking to me. Says when he met you,
you were like white paper, so clean and pure.
Oh, you were pure beauty right to the end. Your husband says,
you did not want to go, because of your daughters.
He says you were the perfect mother, you gave everything.

COLOR AND SPACE – 君兒 Jun Er

Please take a look at my previous translations of Jun Er’s poems:以前翻譯了《針織廠》 KNITTING MILL《鼠鈔》 RAT NOTES《海棠花開》 CRABAPPLE BLOSSOMS。Today I have translated five poems – two into English, three into German.

the embarrassment I had met with
you would know it all over
our skin for example
we are those mesons
another kind

white in africa
dark in asia
what if we feel proud of ourselves?
and why the hell not?

12 punkte unterschied
du besuchst die gelben quellen
ich kleb noch am staub dieser welt
faul. schläfrig. wehr mich…
große schwester
schnee auf dem bildschirm
find dein gesicht, deine stimme nicht mehr
wo du jetzt bist
was ist das für eine welt
braucht man dort auch sechzig punkte
um durchzukommen
wie viele wiedergeburten
haben wir dann zuwenig punkte gemeinsam
in der wievielten komma wievielten
wievielten welt
