20
9/11 is like 1989.
People will remember.
20, 30, a hundred years after.
One such year is more than enough
in a lifetime, if you were there
among the carnage
or when the wall came down,
or was opened, at first.
I was on a beach in 1989,
in the winter.
Weeks on a beach,
and Romania burned,
after Czechoslovakia didn’t,
and so on and so on.
A beach in Thailand, sunset beach.
Sunrise is on the other side
of the peninsula.
There is a mountain in between,
and there was one water buffalo left,
as far as I remember.
Krabi, Krabi! crie the boatsmen,
we didn’t go back to Krabi, the nearest town,
for quite a while.
Newspapers were from days ago, a week ago.
It was a marvelous year.
In 1989, I was in Taiwan, and in between, in the US and in Thailand.
In 2001, I was in Beijing.
Jackie worked in the Austrian embassy.
I was teaching and translating.
We saw it on TV, not right away,
as far as I remember.
We talked to friends and relatives
on the phone.
It was two years after 1999,
when Belgrade was bombarded.
They bombed the Chinese embassy,
it’s still not clear why.
I was in China then too,
in Chongqing.
I cried when I saw the towns over there on TV,
it looked too much like home.
They did to Belgrade what the Serbian side
had done to Sarajewo, and other cities,
and there was the massacre of Srebrenica
and so on and so on.
Yugoslavia is the place in Europa
that had no walls coming down in 1989,
rather some going up, more and more.
In 2012 we did a magazine issue here in Vienna,
Headfirst through the Great Wall of China,
or something like that.
It was crazy.
We had Yan Jun for reciting poetry and drama,
and we had Hui Ye, a very versatile local artist, mostly based in Austria.
Yan Jun is a famous poet and experimental musician from Lanzhou,
lives mostly in Beijing, very much on the fringe.
So we were doing a small local magazine,
but we were so excited, we told all the world!
I did, mostly. It was really great.
We had Yugoslavia, mainland China, Taiwan
and a Turkish German author wrote
the Great Wall was a sleeping dragon
that woke up once in a few centuries
and people came to grief.
And the magazine editor wanted to kill that,
thought it was disrespectful.
I don’t think he knew anyone from China.
How is this about 9/11?
9/11 was like 1989, in a way.
Everyone knows what happened in 1989,
or everyone doesn’t,
depends where you are.
There are still thousands of people
who died in New York on that day,
but there are no remnants.
They are still searching for traces.

MALAIEN KÖNNEN EINFACH SO SCHIESSEN
Auf den Zinnen von Malakka
sagt unsere Führerin (sie ist chinesische Malaiin)
malaische Muslims seien privilegiert

ICH HAB OFT GROSSE SACHEN IM KOPF
Ich nenne meinen kleinen Hund Toby
jetzt Planet Erde.

FIRST STORY
“In danger the sea cucumber will split itself
one half it gives the world to devour,
the other half escapes.” – from W. Szymborska, Autotomy.
I said let’s not talk poetry at the lunar new year let us tell stories
like a bricklayer half of his head bashed in by half of a steel pipe
like he and his sick room friends
arguing anything, twitching like sleepwalking
he says 3+2=1
like three fingers plus two equals one hand
two hands together equals one pair
like what a rat hates most is rat poison
whoever loves eating rat poison most must be a rat
like I said they were arguing anything
from mathematics into philosophy
from singular into plural
from fingers into a skull bashed in
into rats, poison, leaks or balloons
like 11+11=22, 22-2=2 and so on
he said not that leaks cannot be fixed
just like rat poison will always be digested by rats
just like rats knocked a hole in his skull
his skull has a leak, like a balloon
a leaking balloon is very hard to blow up
just like his half-bashed in skull pops in and out with a yawn
he said in the box with the rat poison there is no rat
rat poison is very bad for rats
just like reading is very bad for your head
just like rats eating his brain slipping into his head
when he said he had a headache, I had a headache
like he wanted me to put rat poison into his brain
like he said: “I’ll soon be an idiot
when they have finished my brain
my boss will dump me, my girlfriend dumps me”
like he is all desperate
crying his heart out like a wolf
howling just like a cat who cannot catch rats
like one hundred rats cannot overcome one single cat
he said: no-one can figure it out, nobody can fix this leak
except me, I have a method, I take a bit of cement, very good quality
mix it with alcohol, ts ts. believe me I have the technique.
he pointed at his broken temporal bone like pointing at some leak on a roof
like a leak on a roof he was fixing

THAILAND CAVE RESCUE
In Thailand
12 boys were saved,
and their trainer.
They had been locked in a cave
by rising water.
A whole football team.
Some were refugees from Burma.
In Europe
in the Mediterranean
it’s not allowed now
to rescue people.
They don’t actively kill
refugees
but they let them drown.
And all the media,
well, it depends what they say.
Interior ministers
are very happy.
But maybe they have
something similar
somewhere some time
in Asia.

THAILAND CAVE RESCUE 2: AUSTRIA
In Thailand,
12 boys
and their young trainer
are rescued
from a flooded cave.
They were 11-16 years old.
In Austria,
a 14-year-old gets shot dead
from behind,
after breaking
into a supermarket.
Another one also gets shot,
survives and gets put on trial
as fast as possible.
And all the big papers
are very fast
on the side of the shooters.
Old enough to steal,
old enough to die,
they chant unisono.
The provincial governor,
some say he made up that song.
The killer
who ran after the boy
and shot him from behind
from very close
was put on trial
more than one year later,
but just for a little.
He knew the boy’ s mother,
they all knew each other
in the poor quarter
of the small town.
The killer lied,
of course they all lied,
said they were in danger,
so he had to shoot.
Actually of course,
the boys were unarmed.
All these details
came out at the trial.
Anyway the killer is still on duty.
Eight months on parole.
No way for the mother
to sue any further,
to get any money.
Some green- leaning left- leaning weekly,
maybe a few other reporters ,
some people didn’t shut up.
So there was a trial,
but he’s still on duty,
and it could be worse,
without truth or trial,
just self- defense,
what they all wanted.
It could be in Austria,
in many places.
Maybe also in Thailand.

HÖHLENRETTUNG I
In Thailand
werden 12 Buben
im Alter von 11-16 Jahren gerettet.
Sie waren in einer Höhle
eingeschlossen.
In Österreich
wird einer erschossen
mit 14
von hinten
auf der Flucht
wegen Einbruch
in einem Supermarkt.
Noch einer wird angeschossen
und schleunigst verurteilt.
Und alle großen Medien stehen
sofort auf der Seite der Polizei.
Der Provinzgouverneur sowieso.
Der Todesschütze ist weiter im Dienst.
Aber vielleicht gibt es das auch
in Thailand,
unter der Junta.

In Europa

dürfen Flüchtende
Männer Frauen und Kinder
nicht mehr gerettet werden.
Sie werden
zwar nicht erschossen,
man lässt sie ersaufen.
Und alle großen Medien
naja vielleicht sind nicht alle immer
auf der Seite der Grenzpolizei.
Die Innenminister schon sowieso.
Aber vielleicht gibt es das auch
anderswo.

SPRING IS A WONDERFUL SEASON
April 15, 2016 in Vienna. #Schutzbefohlene *
Spring is a wonderful season,
trees spilling their green.
Some are cut, some are planted.
Downstairs across they are planting a park,
used to be train tracks.
Last year we had refugees at the station.
Spring is a wonderful season.
They said it was 90,000 people or so
in all of Austria,
mostly in a few months,
who wanted to stay in this country.
Ten times more went on to Germany.
So many people wanted to help.
Train workers, even police.
Volunteers, often more than enough.
We live in the neighbourhood.
My daughter Maia went down to play with the refugee children.
After a while she knew the volunteers.
It was safe.
The refugees staid down by the station.
Some people from our house took in refugees.
There was discussion to use the shop,
the empty shop downstairs in this new house,
for refugee quarters.
Just for the winter.
That shop has bathrooms and everything.
But then they closed down at the station.
It was in December.
They took them with buses, they said, from the border.
On to Germany.
If you said you wanted Germany, they let you in.
They were building a fence.
So in December, the station was empty.
Maybe Mid-December.
No quarters in our house.
But people still coming in.
Coming up through the Balkans, used to be Yugoslavia.
In early January we played Tarot down in the library.
We have a library in our house.
And we play cards, for a few pennies.
On Friday nights.
We have had readings, and even theatre.
Gudrun and Peter, they built a stage.
Downstairs in the big common room.
We had a night reciting Bob Dylan.
Down you masters of war.
But then in January, there was Cologne.
In Cologne at the train station, on New Year’s Night.
Hundreds of women harassed.
Raped, one or two.
Many foreign men there at the train station.
Not enough police, or police doing nothing.
We should discuss this, one of us said.
We had been playing cards.
What is there to discuss, there ‘s not much in the news.
Maybe social networks did play a role.
I want to discuss this.
These refugees becoming a problem.
What is there to discuss, there’s not much in the news.
These refugees becoming a problem.
A discussion is stupid, without any facts.
So one of us went away in a huff.
Later I was away, I was in China.
In southern China, a poetry trip.
From southern China to Southeast Asia.
Self-organized.
The year before they went to Vietnam.
Wrote some good poetry.
Vietnam wars in the background,
including China attacking Vietnam.
And other stuff, daily life.
Morning routine.
This year I went with them through Southeast Asia.
Poets from all over China. 16 or 17.
One or two guides.
Guides of Chinese extraction.
Thailand, Singapore. And Malaysia.
Then back to Nanning, to southern China.
Poetry meetings, almost every night.
Sometimes more.
One time in the airport.
Plane was delayed, nothing better to do, call a poetry meeting.
Poems written there on the road.
Yi Sha has this dream, before every border.
Dreaming they won’t let him through.
Normally he writes down all his dreams.
Makes for good poetry.
But not this time, he was afraid.
Only when we were safe in Malaysia.
They had a crackdown, in Kuala Lumpur.
There was an attack in Indonesia.
Muslim majority in Malaysia, too.
If the father is Muslim, the child has to be Muslim.
Not Chinese or anything else.
It was not like this before.
At least according to our guide.
They have elections and a Sultan.
Or they call him a King, at least in Chinese.
It’s a beautiful country.
Tribes in the woods.
Our guide lived with a tribe for a week.
For a project at university.
She was very young, has a small child.
She speaks Fukien Chinese.
Mandarin with the tourists, of course.
Liked to talk about sex.
Malaysian men with many wives.
Just a few Muslims, who can afford it.
On February first, I came back to Austria.
Refugees still coming, though not so many.
News had been shifting.
Creating a climate against refugees.
We put a limit on loving our neighbours.
That was a poster.
The foreign minister, he’s very young.
The interior ministress.
She’s not there any more now, she’ll become governess.
Governor of Lower Austria.
And the candidate.
Their candidate for Federal President.
President is just a figurehead here.
Like in Germany.
In Germany, he is elected in parliament.
So he is from the majority party.
He or she.
In Austria, everyone votes for the President.
Everyone should.
Everyone is automatically registered, every citizen.
Nowadays you can vote in advance.
Local district office.
Ballot per mail, or there at the office.
That guy for limits on loving your neighbour won’t make it.
He’s trailing far behind in the polls.
But his policies are federal policy.
They let that happen, the Social Democrats.
They are the majority.
But they let it happen, they are just like the rightists.
News had been shifting.
These refugees becoming a problem.
Some Social Democrats work with the Rightists.
Those other Rightists.
That Freedom Party.
Some Neo-Nazis.
Some Neo-Nazis cling to this party.
Some were just Liberals.
In the 1980s they were for joining the European Community.
Anyway now they are shameless Rightists.
Austria should not be ashamed, they proclaim.
Including old Nazis, including SS.
And Social Democrats think they should work with them.
But they are trailing, the Social Democrats.
Maybe their candidate will fall behind,
though not as far as the one with the limits.
They are far behind, both of them.
Three candidates are in front.
Front-runner is from the Green Party.
They always were for refugees.
And there is a woman.
Not from a party.
A former judge.
Liberal views, for the economy.
Definitely not from the Left.
Those two were leading.
But Freedom Party candidate is closing up.
No, he doesn’t say we are all Germans.
Though he says many things.
Austrians first, don’t be ashamed.
Don’t be ashamed of anything.
Works better than just talk about limits.
So I’ve voted already, ten days in advance.
I’m afraid.
That Freedom guy is worse than Trump.
Similar causes why they are so popular.
Austria is very small.
President is just a figurehead.
But I’m afraid.
Austria becomes Hungary.
Headline in Switzerland, two days ago.
Rightist government, fences.
Italy protesting, not only Greece.
Against Austria, in the EU.
EU has been weak.
Rightist reactions in Eastern Europe.
Rightist rhetoric against refugees.
From Social Democrats, some of them.
EU is weak, was very weak in the Yugoslav wars.
Mid-April sun is shining outside.
Spring is a beautiful season,
trees spilling their green.
Some are cut, some are planted.
Downstairs across they are planting a park.
Martin Winter
April 15, 2016
*Schutzbefohlene means people placed under protection. It is the title of a play by Elfriede Jelinek, the Austrian author who won the Nobel prize for literature in 2004. She wrote the play in 2013. It was performed, by refugees, at University of Vienna on April 14, 2016, when a group of rightists stormed the stage. They sprayed red paint and reportedly injured performers, including children. I wrote the long poem above on Friday morning, April 15. I had not been at the performance and knew nothing about the incident before my text was finished. But I think my text works as background reading, at least.

in position
ich glaub er ist sehr fleißig
so viele chinesen
er bedient die touristen
passt sich wundervoll an.

DER MOND MUSS PERFEKT SEIN
in singapur
erklärt uns die führerin
(ihr name heißt schwalbe)
die strengsten gesetze
klingt wie sie in thailand
buddha anbeten.
um mitternacht sind wir am hotel,
halten noch eine lesung,
gegenüber gleich an der straße.
man kann sogar rauchen,
hauptsache es landet nichts auf dem boden.
man darf bier bestellen,
nicht zuviel auf einmal.
wo ist der mond?
in singapur
sonst schlägt man ihn hinten.
er schwebt aus den wolken
schön wie sichs gehört.

SHE HAS TO BE PERFECT
In Singapore
we have a new guide.
Her name means “swallow”.
She explains about their laws.
Sounds a bit like Thailand
talks about Buddhism.
“You have to be careful,
you can’t just sit down anywhere.”
We get in very late
but we still call a reading.
Across the street from the hotel
you can sit outside,
you can even smoke.
Long as you don’t toss the butt.
When you order a beer,
one bottle per person may be too much.
Where is the moon?
In Singapore
she obeys the law to the letter,
otherwise they beat her behind.
She steps out of the clouds
in her most perfect poise.

These few days
someone gave an interview
voice of freedom or something.
Said the city he lived in

autonomous region was not autonomous.

He wasn’t the first.
Let’s go now, go.

planned for the afternoon.

MOSQUE & CASINO
Mosque and casino
both have Adam and Eve.
The casino in Singapore
at the Botanical Garden
greets you with Dali and with Botero.
Botero’s sculptures Adam and Eve
at the gate of the casino.
What would the artist think of this sight?
Art is a rather ambivalent thing.
Poetry makes you a better person?
The mosque in Malaysia’s government district
is a sight to behold.
I am folding my hands.
An old lady asks me if I am a Muslim.
I just bow and keep silent,
so she lets me go in
and helps me taking pictures.
She sees I don’t know how to pray
so she gives me a folder and tries to explain.
There’ll be prayer time in forty minutes.
Men at the bottom, women up there.
She hopes I can make it.
The folder says
Adam and Eve were also Muslims.
Adam was the first Prophet.
The Mosque has Quran editions in English.
I flip through a section.
Allah bestows many signs on mankind.
Sleep is also a sign,
along with creation
and languages and different colours.
We haven’t had enough sleep on this trip.
Soaring up with my eyes,
I think being a Muslim is good.
I know why it’s forbidden to make any idols.
Half an hour later we are drinking beer.
I am still a believer
in beauty in art.
Poetry and art are signs of Allah.

HEROES’ MONUMENT OF MALAYSIA
Was it a glorious thing when they died?
Did they go to war
for peace and freedom?
In World War I
In World War II
In civil war
they hardly had any choice.
In 1966
Malaysia’s prime minister had them erected
a park of monuments.
They already had one from World War I.
With names from Europe, also from India.
Probably officers.
To make this park for all those who died,
all those who gave their lives in the wars.
In 1966.
I was born in that year.
Maybe this monument
was a good idea.

WASHING MY FEET IN THE PACIFIC
the green waters of the pacific
are washing the palms of my feet
girls who have breasts and have male organs
are sleeping nearby
my country is two hours by plane
my home is in a polluted part north by the sea
every drop of water is precious there
the pacific, a mirror
the pacific is me

MOND IN ALASKA
du bist der mond über alaska
du bist der fluss
grüne wellen spiegeln dein schwarzes gewand
du zündest dir selbstgedrehten tabak an
machst raudau, nimmst drogen, machst liebe

GODDAMN LU-PRIZE
the night they announced
the lu xun literature prize
my mobile phone rang
it was the ningxia muslim poet
shan yongzhen. he said:
“only if you are never considered
for the biggest official prize,
you can become
a great poet in china.
tonight my first candidate
would have been chang yao
(who died in 2000)
the second one I thought of
was you, brother yi!”
hearing these words
brother yi stammered
didn’t know what to say
would have liked to hang up
brother shan said:
“so you don’t want to
discuss this topic
in any way?”
I said:
“yes, yes ….”
he didn’t know
what I was doing
I didn’t want to discuss any topic
I was watching a porn flick
on my computer
there was this great
piece of ass from thailand
in front of my eyes
