A REASON NOT TO CRY – 龚志坚

A REASON NOT TO CRY

spring wind, a pair of cattle trying to mate
first time it won’t work
second time, with the help of the holder
they finish the old rite of life
joy is so short, giving birth takes so long
spring wind, please give this moaning cow
a reason not to cry

TULIP – 春樹 Chun Sue

TULIP

tulip hangs down
like a penis
are there any softer
things on this world?
this yellow tulip
wants to tell me
a secret
regarding a petal
gently feeling it
this night in march
it arouses
my inner desire

what can’t be erased
so skinny before
at this point in life
I am a human
feeling how humans
first come to this world

MOTHER HAS NOT CHANGED ONE BIT – 三个A

MOTHER HAS NOT CHANGED ONE BIT

she went through the cultural revolution
through the great leap famine
through working her farm on her own
went through village loneliness
went through labour pains
went through years of poverty
she carried her son on her back
a dozen miles to the next clinic
went through years of not speaking
went through times of great fires
she did not change one bit
like other people of the same age
she became old in her best years
in their richest dreams they became skinny
she had five children
her five children gave birth in turn
to her ten grandchildren
through her busy life
through stomach aches and tinnitus
through fevers and colds
through getting sick
through the moon waxing and waning
when she gets tired and falls asleep
she will go through a big fire
becoming the air
I breathe every day

I AM THE CHAMPION – 游若昕

五月 7, 2015

champion

You Ruoxin
CHAMPION

I am one semen
in my mother’s belly
competing with the other semen
sprinting as fast as I can
to be the first
at the finish
and become the champion
If I don’t run
faster
if I’m not
the champion
there will be
no me on this world

EAT A PAGODA – 西娃

四月 2, 2015

eat pagoda

Xi Wa 《吃塔》
EAT A PAGODA

somewhere in the south on a restaurant table
I saw a pagoda
of red shining pork
(I hope I don’t remember its name)
when it appeared
I gazed on that thing
couldn’t take off my eyes

all the other dishes
had become worshippers
I was a worshipper
until I remembered
where I was born
in tibet
all those believers around a pagoda
their heads on the ground, offering incense
I was one of them
now I am one of them here

all those years, I kept my respect
for the mystery of a pagoda
I also kept my taboos about foods
looking at this pagoda of pork
red dazzling meat
I understand what appetite means:
people will eat all they can eat
and they will eat up all things they can’t

raising their chopsticks, sharing the food
the shining pagoda
pork dazzling red
I didn’t hear any sound
but it was as if I could see the dust
the rumbling dust
of our beliefs prostate on the ground
shoved down the throats of other people
their juices have no taboos
they clear it up without any sound

KNITTING MILL – 君儿 JUN‘ER

KNITTING MILL

I was in second year junior high
mother sent father to our country high school
to take me straight to the village-run knitting mill

they promised me
if elder sister wouldn’t make it to college
she’d come to work at the mill so I could

go on and study
it meant only one sister
could go to school

fate didn’t favor my sister
fell short a few points at the entrance exam
I went back to school, made it to Jinan in Shandong

sister worked and got married
had a stillbirth, got poisoned from pesticides
she killed herself

raising the past for the nth time at dinner table
mother says you all don’t have it worst
it’s the truth who had it worst vanished in smoke
