MOMENT
Wir nehmen einander an der Hand,
halten uns einfach so,

JAPAN VISA
I hand over
my household registration,
my ID card.
my passport,
a certificate from my work
for how many years of employment,
how much I make every month,
how many days of vacation they gave me,
how much of that I’ll be spending abroad.
Proof that I own my apartment,
dirver’s licence,
bank certificate, signed and stamped
about my income this year
and over 100.000 in my my account.
It wasn’t easy, but someone
went for me to the people’s court
in another city 500 miles away
and copied
my divorce agreement
from 27 years ago.
My Shiba Inu,
pure Japanese breed,
secretly
went along after me,
also like some kind of
proof.

NATIONAL DAY
In all these years
there is one national day
I can‘t seem to forget.
Three years ago
I was in Vermont.
Only once you have passed
your National Day abroad,
only then you know:
You are thinking of your own country,
not just your family.
You are missing its reeking
insecure
sense of security.

LISTE DERER, DIE NICHT BEZAHLT HABEN
Ein Zettel aus der Diplomatischen Akademie
mit allen Namen aller Studenten
vom Bezahlstatus her ganz durcheinander.

I AM GOING TO THE SEA IN THE STARS
at night
there’s a road
that climbs to a road
then climbs to the next road
many thousand roads
all climb to another road
one road behind all the others
stands up
takes a good look under its feet
villages cities countries
starts dancing into the heavens
30,000 suns and above
lightly
in a few steps

MEINE FAHRT GEHT AUFS STERNENMEER

SMALL SOVEREIGN PATCH OF OUR COUNTRY
the tour bus was passing
a building
everyone only uses the back door
says our guide
all through the year
the front door is never open
everybody who works there
goes in from the back
I was just waking up
thought he was talking
about the cobra
research station

EIN FLECKCHEN HEIMATERDE
der bus hat gerade
ein gebäude passiert
jeder benützt nur die hintertür
sagt unser führer
das ganze jahr
die vordertür ist nicht einen tag offen
alle die drinnen arbeiten
müssen immer von hinten hinein
ich war grad aufgewacht
hab gedacht er spricht
über das brillenschlangenlabor

ENTERING AMERICA
I flew from beijing into detroit
and there I walked to immigration
facing two members
of the border police
one checking people
one checking luggage
I didn’t care what they were doing
I came prepared with one magic word
“I am a poet”
(from my successful experience
at the embassy getting a visa)
one policeman was old, one was young
but their expressions
surprised and delighted and even respectful
were exactly the same
over and over they stamped my passport
actually I had some experience before
this is not the first time I’m going abroad
except in my country where I keep quiet
I beat my chest everywhere and exclaim:
“I am a poet!”
shsh! don’t let the terrorists hear me
god bless america
and keep it safe
