ALTER TEMPEL

das tempeltor ist fest verschlossen
eine einsame rote laterne
kommt von fern auf gewundenem weg
ein zweig osmanthusblüten
lässt mich die rechte hand hoch hinaufstrecken
meine fünf finger
fünf magere

SMALL SOVEREIGN PATCH OF OUR COUNTRY

the tour bus was passing
a building
everyone only uses the back door
says our guide
all through the year
the front door is never open
everybody who works there
goes in from the back
I was just waking up
thought he was talking
about the cobra
research station

EIN FLECKCHEN HEIMATERDE

der bus hat gerade
ein gebäude passiert
jeder benützt nur die hintertür
sagt unser führer
das ganze jahr
die vordertür ist nicht einen tag offen
alle die drinnen arbeiten
müssen immer von hinten hinein
ich war grad aufgewacht
hab gedacht er spricht
über das brillenschlangenlabor

DOORS

1

I’ve always felt close
to simple images
like a bench or a shoehorn.
Only doors make me uneasy
mainly because after the gate it gets complicated
and so I have heard
when they make doors
people have built in the sound of knocking.
What is the use of that?
It’s decades since then.
I think it has been useful.
Doors often need a knock on their heart.

2

The door kept in by the doors
is the door to the bedroom.
The door kept out of the doors
is the door of the house.
The door that never needs to be closed
has not been born.

TÜR UND TOR

1

DREAMING OF LIVING INSIDE A DREAM

Tr. MW, June 2014

Published in EPIPHANY magazine, fall 2014. Go on, look for this great Chinese Dream! I spent October 2014 at Vermont Studio Center with Yi Sha, editor of the daily New Century Poetry series 新世纪诗典. Chun Sue is one of the most well-known figures within this huge independent circle of poets.

MORNING, AVENUE OF ETERNAL PEACE

Little Brother says: dad, Avenue of Eternal Peace
take a good look
This is the road you walked for over 20 years
I am sitting with Papa and Little Brother
I am almost crying
Finally I know
why I like the Avenue of Eternal Peace
Slowly the car passes the Military Museum
and the red walls of Zhongnanhai
and Xinhua Gate
Papa is small now he fits in an ash box
sitting between us
doesn’t take up much space
We pass the Gate of Heavenly Peace
and I see him
He stands on the square
watching us while we’re passing

Why was it so hard to write about you
You’re the son of a peasant
I was born in a village
I am also the child of a peasant
I put on army songs for you all night
Crying my heart out —
I like all that too.
