To my chagrin
as former class monitor
I have to say, I also have
conducted such a vote.
Gathered all the children’s ballots,
never looked at them at all,
just threw it out
in the garbage can at the office.
And then
I selected the student I had in mind,
told them this student had the most votes
to make him their speaker.

​als ehemaliger Klassenvorstand
muss ich sagen, auch ich
hab eine solche Wahl durchgeführt.
Hab die Stimmen der Kinder
eingesammelt,
nicht einmal angeschaut
und sofort im Büro
im Papierkorb entsorgt.
Und nachher
den Schüler, der mir gepasst hat,
als den mit den meisten Stimmen
zum Klassensprecher bestimmt.

YAN JIN’S HOLIDAYS

Yan Jin was in the army in Shandong,
he had a one-week holiday.
He had figured it out,
altogether two days from Shandong to Xi’an
and from Xi’an to his home town in northern Shaanxi.
Going back to his unit, also two days.
So he could stay at home for three days.
In Xi’an,
at the north bus station
they screwed him and took him to Fugu
at the most northern tip of Shaanxi, 300 kilometres from home.
When he got to his family,
he was four days into his holiday
and could stay home just one day.
