The candles are fine,

Shangyuan Art Museum
lies far from the city,
close to the country,
close to nature,
very close to the mountains.

to senseless absurdity
in its society.
It just got too close.
It got fucked over,
it got violated.
The mountains are there,

Art lies destroyed.
How can it go on?
To be an artist

This is Monday.
Last night the moon
was full and had sleep.
Although after dark
they went on demolishing.
Walking to Pingyifen
at nine o’clock
we still got noodles.
Walked back, went to sleep.
At three thirty or so
dawn was beginning.
One hour later
I crawled out of bed.
Took a shower at five
and there was water!
Around six
they went on digging.
Walked down to the basement,
there was no power.
Walked to the library
with the water heater
with ground coffee
and the French press.
The library has Wifi.
I was beginning
to get back my spirits.
Then we went out
to have a picnic
under some trees.
At around eleven
you could feel the heat.
There were some clouds,
just like a Sunday.

Last year in April
when I first came
and walked through the campus
of Shangyuan Art Museum
from the front to the back
along the big exhibition hall
to the small bridge
on the left
there was a wall
a tall grey wall
crowned with barbed wire.
Looked like a prison.
What is this
I asked.
It is the house
of the poet Xi Chuan.
But he never comes
he’s never been here.
I didn’t ask more.
Now there is no exhibition hall.
From the library
from the back door
you can see over the ruins
all the way
to that grey wall.
There is enough space
to write on the wall.
Maybe just one character
maybe “shame”.
That “shame” of “no shame”.
Yes I do know
that I don’t know
very much at all.
There must be reasons
why it went this way.
But now there is room

MOTHER
Yesterday on the phone
I wished her the best for mother’s day.
She’s in Austria, I am in China.
We used WeChat.
My son has it,
not even a week now.
It’s six hours earlier there.
Yesterday my wife and our kids
had lunch with my parents.
On mother’s day
they’ll be with my sister.
So it had to be yesterday.
I heard her voice for the first time
since the middle of April.
She sounded healthy and hale
in body and mind.
This year she’ll be 82.
She can drive.
Her health is better than my father’s.
My father’s not bad.
He is 84.
After a stroke he doesn’t drive.
He walks with a cane.
When I was small I had mom & her mom
and my father’s mom.
Now I have my mother.
It’s good to have WeChat.
I have always thought,
whatever works,
they are all good.

还不到一个星期
时差六个小时
昨天妻子儿子女儿
跟我父母吃饭
母亲节那天
父母跟我妹妹
所以只能昨天
从四月中第一次
听到母亲的声音
印象她很健康
心里身体都好
母亲今年八十二
能开车
身体比父亲好
父亲也不错
八十四岁了
中风后不能开车
走路用拐杖
小时候有母亲和姥姥
还有奶奶
现在有母亲
有微信多好
一直觉得
哪种方式能交流
都好

MOON
The moon is like
leftover dumplings.
It was very good,
it’s different tomorrow.
The evening sky
had large waves of clouds.
First white on blue,
then purple on grey,
all in huge spirals.
The stars are bright
and very clear.
Tomorrow should be
a beautiful day.
It’ll be mother’s day,
I am far from home.

PLATFORM
The platform under heaven
isn’t easy to find.
Up is the sky
down is the platform.
Under the railway,
then take a sharp left,
under the railway again.
You can go by car,
all the way up.
Then you have to walk,
hike to the platform.
Not very far.
On the platform
you can do Yoga,
singing, dancing,
lie down together
under the stars.
When it’s day
you can climb further
until you see
the reservoir.
Then you stand,
up is heaven,
down the mountain.
There is no
better platform.

MORNING
In the morning
the sheep wake up slowly.
Maybe they are goats,
they don’t have much fur.
They sleep together
close to the wall.
There is some straw.
A little one is hungry.
It has grown up,
but still wants to suck,
it pushes its mother down there.
It doesn’t work.
The mother walks off.
Most of the small ones aren’t up.
A big one takes a big one,
right in the middle of the whole place,
rather like a big dog.
The birds have been busy
flitting and calling
for hours already.
It’s six o’clock,
not that any goat cares.
Another train is coming.
The curves of the mountain
are beautiful curves
in the morning light.

羊群慢慢地醒来
也许是山羊
毛也不多
他们睡在一起
靠近墙壁
有一些稻草
一只小的饿了
它已经长大了
但还是想吸
推着妈妈的下面
没用的
妈妈走开
大部分小的都没起来
一个大的拉一个大的
就在整个地方的正中央
很像一条大狗
鸟儿们忙着
飞来飞去叫
也像打电话
已经几个小时
现在是六点
反正山羊也不在乎
另一列火车来了
山的曲线
都是美丽的曲线
