MISSING
Shangyuan Art Museum,
the ruins of the big exhibition hall
in the middle of nowhere
are a metaphor
for the state.
For the state of culture.
For the state of art.
No reason, except the state
of reasoning.
A monument of sorts.
I miss it.

VERMISST
Shangyuan Art Museum,
die Ruinen der großen Halle
sind eine Metapher für den Zustand.
Für den Zustand der Kunst,
den Zustand der Kultur
und so weiter.
Kein Grund, abgesehen vom Zustand
der staatlichen Gründe.
Irgendwie ein Denkmal.
Ich wär gern noch dort.

STERNE
Gestern hat jemand
ganz viele Kerzen
in die Ruinen gestellt.
Zwischen den Kerzen
sind sie gestanden,
haben Geige gespielt
und einen Psalm rezitiert.
Mutter und Tochter.
Nachher haben Xiao Xiao und ich
Gedichte gelesen.
Kerzen sind kein Problem,
Kerzen sind wie der Mond
in den Ruinen.
Du kannst Geige spielen,
kannst lesen und singen
was immer du willst.

STARS
Last night someone
put down many candles
on the ruins.
Then they stood there,
played a violin
and recited a Psalm.
Mother and daughter.
At the end two poets
did some of their stuff.
The candles are fine,
like the moon, don’t be scared,
the candles are fine in the ruins.
You can play your violin,
you can sing,
you can recite
whatever you like.

There isn’t much grass in our backyard,

There are not many goats in our backyard,

Grass got eaten.

Grass will grow.

Hard times are coming
Or so I’m told
time to start packing away
(carefully)
our joy and mischief
(we might get the chance)
with irreverence and a
(to dig them out again)
sense of ungovernable freedom and
(dust them off)
reckless abandonment
(and play again)
there is still hope.

Promise me
Seth Deacon
All you believers,
All you soldiers for a cause,
those of you who would build nations and tear them down
Those of you who are so sure
Of the line between us and them.
Between you and I.
(Even if you and I were once lovers, sisters, brothers)
Promise me you won’t make the world too small.
Because I am very much afraid
Of what happens when all of our fists and chests constrict so tightly we cannot breathe,
Never mind sing to each other.
I am afraid of what we’ll see in the mirror once there are no more enemies to look at
I am afraid I will never get to see you again
Or that if I do,
We will both be so changed we will not recognise each other
Or worse
We will be so changed we will not be able to look each other in the eye,
Because we will be too alike

IN THE MUSEUM THAT IS
BEING DEMOLISHED
Here and Vienna,
two different planets.
Here and Beijing,
two different planets.
Here and the mountains
or even the neighbors,
two different planets.
Although to the neighbors
there are some relations
closer than being
in the same solar system.

MOON
This is Monday.
Last night the moon
was full and had sleep.
Although after dark
they went on demolishing.
Walking to Pingyifen
at nine o’clock
we still got noodles.
Walked back, went to sleep.
At three thirty or so
dawn was beginning.
One hour later
I crawled out of bed.
Took a shower at five
and there was water!
Around six
they went on digging.
Walked down to the basement,
there was no power.
Walked to the library
with the water heater
with ground coffee
and the French press.
The library has Wifi.
I was beginning
to get back my spirits.
Then we went out
to have a picnic
under some trees.
At around eleven
you could feel the heat.
There were some clouds,
just like a Sunday.

CHARACTER
Last year in April
when I first came
and walked through the campus
of Shangyuan Art Museum
from the front to the back
along the big exhibition hall
to the small bridge
on the left
there was a wall
a tall grey wall
crowned with barbed wire.
Looked like a prison.
What is this
I asked.
It is the house
of the poet Xi Chuan.
But he never comes
he’s never been here.
I didn’t ask more.
Now there is no exhibition hall.
From the library
from the back door
you can see over the ruins
all the way
to that grey wall.
There is enough space
to write on the wall.
Maybe just one character
maybe “shame”.
That “shame” of “no shame”.
Yes I do know
that I don’t know
very much at all.
There must be reasons
why it went this way.
But now there is room
there is very much space
now the effect
could be not bad.

HEALTH
I heard the pandemic
and being demolished
produce the same feeling.
The class of the people
who manage the buildings,
the class of the people
who guard all the gates,
the class of the people
who sell drinking water,
the class of the leaders
they all would be feeling
very healthy.

ALL THERE
The people up on the mountain
are almost all there.
The buildings down below the mountain
are almost all there.
The color on people’s faces
is almost all there.
The mountains up on the mountain
they should all be there.
Every one can
be in the picture.

42 – thanks Douglas Adams
there is nothing special about anyone
there is nothing special about any town
there is nothing special about any street
or any sheet –
there is nothing special about any day
there is something special about every one
there is something special about every town
there is something special about every street,
every sheet,
every day.
maybe all of these things are true
maybe all of these things are too much
sometimes a poet is an asshole
sometimes a poet may be a great person
maybe sometimes any person
can be an asshole
most probably
what is it all 4?
what is it all 5?
what is it all 42?
sometimes we do what we can do
sometimes we are happy
for a short while
