I HAVE DONE EVERY MAJOR
– for David Howard
i have done every major German poet from behind
their puppies squished by the garage door
on their northern flanks in the middle of winter
held open by Keats.
the garage door, not the puppies,
somewhere in New Zealand. the forbidding garage doors
with their North German puppies
shepherded by Coleridge
on the southern island
right after Dunedin
the electric piano.
i sing the puppies electric
held open by Coleridge
on the fourth staircase
in Vienna’ s tenth district
at the new railway station
gentrified by the new park
for the dead former mayor
multiplying like rabbits
chased by North German shepherds
through the construction sites.
who’s doing whom?
ah! poetry.
“listen: there is a hell
of a good universe next door.
let’s go.”

HAPPY 2017!
2016 was actually not bad.
We won Van der Bellen.
It was a long match.
The referee made it last the whole year.
We stayed in our league.
Which regional league is that exactly?
There are so many, aren’t there?
They lost some big matches in other leagues.
There’ll be all sorts of fall-out all over.
Anyway, we won.
Happy New Year!

Yi Sha
ONE QUESTION OUT OF A MILLION
after the conquerors have conquered us
in the aliens’ kitchen
you are smoked ham
I am the sausage
why is that? why not the other way:
I am smoked ham
you are the sausage
my suspicion is very well founded.
they eat six sausages every day
but just one smoked ham every six days
and so my wronged soul up in heaven
keeps asking why?
why?

Yi Sha《
EIN WARUM VON HUNDERTTAUSEND
nachdem wir erobert sind und bezwungen
in der küche der aliens
wirst du die rauchwurst
ich bin die knackwurst
warum ist das so? warum
bin ich nicht die rauchwurst
und du bist ein knacker?
ich weiß nämlich genau
knackwürste essen sie jeden tags sechs
rauchwürste jeden sechsten tag eine
meine betrogene seele fragt noch im himmel
warum denn?
warum?

Yi Sha
LONELY SHEPHERD
last night I secretly watched
a film on a disc
wasn’t easy to get
borrowed it from a friend
it was called Lonely Shepherd
a New Zealand movie
very well done. very realist piece
that lonely shepherd
acted really lonely
right under the sun
on the velvet carpet
of the green pasture
he screwed three mother sheep
very well done
very moving
not fit for children
1995

Yi Sha《
EINSAMER HIRTE
gestern schau ich mir heimlich
ein video an
ausgeborgt von einem freund
war gar nicht so leicht
der film heißt “einsamer hirte”
ein neuseeländischer streifen
sehr gut gemacht. ganz realistisch
dieser einsame hirte
wirklich sehr einsam dargestellt
auf der weide unter der sonne
auf samtgrünen matten
fickt er drei mutterschafe
dieser film ist
sehr schön gedreht
rührend
nicht jugendfrei
1995

(1995)
Yi Sha 《
BANALES GEDICHT
ein mädchenpaar redet vom abnehmen
ich hör ganz banal zu
sie sorgen sich
um ein problem
das problem besteht darin
am gesäß abzunehmen
und nicht zugleich
an den brüsten
diesen nachmittag
hör ich heimlich zu
wie sie reden im bus
in der reihe vor mir
denk mir so ist das leben
es ist so schön
in diesem moment
will ich es ehrlich nur aufschnappen
dieses vulgäre gedicht
1995
Übersetzt von MW im Oktober 2016
(1995)
Yi Sha《
JEDEN TAG AUF DEM MARKT
Ich tauche auf
und flaniere
durch die Menge auf dem Gemüsemarkt.
Das ist eine tägliche Szene,
der konkrete Inhalt
des Lebens.
Ich beherrsche
das Handeln, die Tricks;
ungleich agieren.
Warum ändern sie
ihr Benehmen?
Das ist menschlich,
allzu menschlich.
Fleischhauer haben ein Beil in der Hand.
1995

Earlier this month, I attended the conference Exploring the China Dream at Stockholm University – glorious good fun including more inspiring and informative presentations than I can mention here, so just a few samples:
At the panel on film and visual culture chaired by eminent organizer Elena Pollacchi, Prof. Paola Voci introduced us to different types of virtual soft power with hilarious and scary examples of short internet films like this one (》低头人生《 about what can happen to people who live with their heads glued to small screens).
Prof. Irmy Schweiger chaired my panel on dreams in literature, in which Martin Winter (who is much quicker on the keyboard than I am and has already blogged about it here and here) read us a poem by Xu Jiang and talked about his translations of Yi Sha’s dream inspired poetry. It reminded me of Jack Kerouac’s Book of…

THE VOICE OF REASON
his master’s voice
who is his master
terror and fear
strache means terror and fear
he was in prison
as neonazi
now they are going to choose his buddy
the voice of reason
president
and federal chancellor
please do not say
austrians are stupid
there are always reasons
anyway if you go to new zealand
don’t say you’re an artist
say you speak chinese
lived 15 years in china and taiwan
they’ll think you’re great
for the economy
