PERE LACHAISE
Last week I wrote a poem
after we walked in Père Lachaise,
the cemetery in Paris.
The one with the stars.
Like Abelard and Heloise.
Yeah, I didn’t know they were there.
There is a book with their letters.
They wrote in Latin.
Anyway we met students from England,
high-school students.
Their teachers had given them maps.
It was cold.
I shouldn’t have been outside.
I know that now.
Rasenvorurteile!
Ich liebe Fußball!
Yeah, they knew German,
some of it sounded quite good.
They were from Leicester,
at least some of them.
Rasen means lawn.
There is another rasen,
it means to rage.
Or also road rage.
But what they had learned was another word.
Race prejudice.
Rassenvorurteile.
Yeah, with two s.
Double s in the races.
Yeah, off to the races,
Hamsterwheel,
Lilo and Stitch.
That is a story
against prejudice,
more or less,
mostly harmless.
Abelard and Heloise
was a different story.
Not really for kids.
But yeah, rather deep,
like much in the cemetery.
There are Chinese graves.
One still had wreaths
from a recent burial.
My poem was in Chinese,
the one from last week.
In the end we found Oscar Wilde
or near the end.
The end was ashes
sprinkled on pieces of lawn
near the north exit.
Without prejudice,
hopefully,
but rather orderly.
There were stones to remember
very grave things
somewhere else.
There was one about Ruanda.
The north exit is near Belleville.
But we went straight home
to our friends’ apartment.
We were cold and tired.
Keep your eyes on the road
and your hands upon the wheel,
and may God protect you,
or whatever spirit.
It is a spiritual place.

NianBu
TODAY I AM HAPPY
Close to the Chinese-Japanese Hospital
I call the owner of a hotel,
saying I may want to stay three, four days.
He says he has singles for a good price,
with windows and air conditioning.
When I arrive at the hotel,
the boss looks at my face
and says, you must be a minority person.
I am Tibetan, I say.
The boss says sorry,
they check the rooms here at night,
people from Xinjiang and Tibet can’t stay.
I ran into something like this years ago.
I got very angry,
had drunk some alcohol,
so I beat up that boss.
But today
I don’t want to get into a fight.
My feelings are more peaceful than ever.
Because today
my son was born.

ERSTER SEIN
Fahrkisten im Osten?
Nein, er verflucht
gern Faschisten im Westen.
Aber was wenn
Fapisste im Süden
Fakiffte im Norden
auch noch dazu kommen?
Dann muss er kämpfen
mit seinen Faschisten
als ganz großes Stichwort
ganz oben zu bleiben.

FIRST FLOOR
On the dormitory’s first floor,
conditions are worst.
Moss on wooden doors,
rust on window bars.
From outside, passing the windows,
I see three special rooms,
with their own bathroom,
doors and windows aluminum,
Simmons mattress.
A black student
wielding a club
to chase a mouse
that ran in from the Chinese students next door.

Hu Xin
NATIVE SPEAKER CLASS
In our native speaker class we have a black teacher
just gleaming white teeth walking towards us
very friendly wants to shake hands one on one
Students next to me fearfully pull in their heads
I jump right up
and give him my hand
and say
hello
All that’s left are panicky faces
like Halloween masks

“WELT BLEIB WACH”
Welt, bleib wach
sagt meine Werbung für Thalia.at
Ich mag Buchhandlungen
Maybe they have Mary and the Witch’s Flower
or we’ll get it in China
Thalia is big enough
the main one at Wien Mitte
to have stuff in English and DVDs
and other languages maybe
I dream of a bookstore
with Turkish Arabic Czech and Hungarian
Slovac Italian Hebrew Slovenian
and many other books
in Vienna
a chain store
maybe Thalia even
that would be something
to stem the tide
of people glued to their smartphones
or screens with ebooks
from Thalia.at
maybe just a little

SOMEONE SAYS THERE ARE MORE EMOTIONS THAN THERE ARE EMOJIS
In a quick ad they say that very quickly
in German they are so excited
there is an extra r
Es gibtr mehr Gefühle als Emojis
Who cares
people ain’t gonna read any more books
if you tell them books are cooler than movies
or things on a screen
which could be books
or poetry
Anyway
sell your books
more power to you
Your campaign in German is rather retro
Welt, bleib wach
sounds like something from 1932
Afterwards
everyone knows
world didn’t stay awake, not enough
Racism
Fascism
Stalinism
Maoism
Neoliberalism
ILLIBERAL DEMOCRATIC
STRONGMANISM
Just how long would you have to stay awake
with a nice book
from the chain store
with this nice ad
to prevent
anything
I have a poem about emojis
no, it’s not written in emojis
it’s in Chinese
I translated it into German
its a very nice poem
They have it up in the streetcars
and buses in Stuttgart
Maybe two more months
I still don’t have a photograph
They sent me two posters
they also sent two posters to China
and a very nice letter
Poetry doesn’t prevent anything
Mao wrote poetry
Stalin wrote poetry
Don’t know if Mussolini
wrote poetry
or Tojo or Franco
or that fucking German Austrian fart
Emojis are nice
Emojis are not competing with books
The poem is by Jiang Xinhe
she was 14
when she wrote it in 2017
The poem is called USELESS CHINESE
that’s a short version
MY CHINESE IN SCHOOL IS USELESS SOMETIMES
On a train through the desert
I add
an Uighur boy on my WeChat
When I’m back in Shenzhen we say hello
but I don’t understand Uighur
and he doesn’t understand Chinese writing
Talking doesn’t work out either
so we can only send emojis
We have used every emoji available
all the way down
now
we are starting again
from the top
7/8/2017
So what’s your emotion
after reading this poem?
Do you know
what’s going on about Uighurs
in China?
Right now, in 2018?
The camps
must have been there
in 2017, last year,
some of them.
Hundreds of thousands, some say one million
mostly men and boys
caught up in camps
for re-education.
Women, too.
So where is that boy now?
I am afraid
to ask the poet.

Xi Wa
MY HIDDEN UGLINESS
I carry two bags of vegetables
coming out of Oakleigh supermarket
and crash into a guy with brown skin.
I wasn’t careful.
I apologize to him,
and he invites me for a drink.
My first reaction
is after the drink
if he wants to sleep with me what shall I do?
He does have deep eyes and a tall nose,
and smells of vetiver,
my favourite scent.
If he had white or yellow skin,
I wouldn’t refuse him outright
in this way.
I thought I had already moved beyond
racism.
Yes, that was before I had concrete thoughts
of going to bed
with one of them.

BERLIN 1936
I imagine
I am standing at the chairman’s rostrum
where hitler stood
but from up there you see it more clearly
all those kinds of olympic events
all sorts of people doing their best
no way of telling overall quality
how could he have arrived at
superiority of the german race?
he was a politician
for a raving politician
what does sport count after all?
he is so selfless
he can forget on the whole square
he’s the most meager ghost of them all
a pathetic born clown

was bedeutet der sport
