DEUTSCHLAND
Deutschland ist ein schönes Land.
Die Bäume im Herbst, die ganze Strecke.
Nördlich von Regensburg,
in einem Fluss
eine lange Insel.
Der Zug fährt nach Berlin.
Ich fahre nach Frankfurt,
steige in Nürnberg um.
Schöne Stadt.
Diesmal bleib ich auf dem Bahnsteig.
Bisschen mehr Sonne wär gut.
Wahrscheinlich werd ich empfindlich im Alter.
Zwei Polizisten patrouillieren,
mit einem Hund.
Meine Damen und Herren,
bitte beachten Sie das Alkoholverbot.
Wo ist Halle an der Saale?
Jetzt weiß ich es, letzter Halt vor Berlin.
Letzte Woche war dort ein Anschlag.
Ein Neonazi, der keiner sein wollte,
wollte sich filmen
und live übertragen
wie er die Synagoge
zu Jom Kippur
am höchsten Feiertag
und so weiter.
Er hats nicht geschafft,
die Tür hat gehalten.
Dann hat er aus lauter Ärger
eine Passantin massakriert
und einen Dönerstand.
Seine Kamera hat funktioniert,
irgendwo ist er archiviert,
wahrscheinlich als abschreckendes
Beispiel,
selbst unter Neonazis,
die keine sein wollen.
Deutschland ist ein schönes Land.
Die Synagoge hatte mehrmals
um Polizeischutz gebeten
und nichts bekommen.
Jetzt wird alles besser.

MONTJUIC, BARCELONA
Montjuic means
mountain of the Jewish cemetery.
In the 1380s
the Jews were driven
out of the city,
gravestones were used
for castle walls.
1000 years ago
there was a light house.
Later the castles built on the top
were often used to shoot on the city.
There’s ample reason,
there are ample historical reasons
for independence.
Catalan language
is everywhere,
Catalan first, Spanish second.
The castle gives you
a history lesson
beginning in Hebrew
and a poem in Catalan.
Much of the city
was built from quarries
here on the mountain.
Today there is peace,
peace enough for reflection.
How much do you need,
how much cooperation,
how much solidarity,
how much economics,
how much is public transport…
What can you see
from the top of the mountain?

SCHANDE
Österreich ist eine Schande.
Wir haben die Balkan-Route verstopft.
Jetzt wird es wieder wie vor einem Jahr.
Im August war da ein Lastwagen,
ein Lastwagen voller Leichen
auf einer Straße im Osten Österreichs
nicht weit vom Flughafen Wien.
Ungefähr 70 Leichen,
nicht wenige Kinder.
Nach diesem Lastwagen,
wann haben sie dann die Grenzen geöffnet?
Nicht alle Grenzen waren gleich offen.
Aber die Eisenbahn
war für die Flüchtlinge offen,
jedenfalls eine Zeitlang.
Warum sind voriges Jahr
soviele Leute auf einmal gekommen?
Wieviele Jahre ist Krieg in Syrien?
Im Libanon wurden voriges Jahr
die Essensrationen halbiert.
Die UNO hatte kein Geld
für die Flüchtlinge.
Das war lange bekannt. Aber einige Staaten,
darunter Österreich, wollten nicht zahlen.
Also sind viele Leute gekommen.
Wann riskierst du dein Leben,
wann riskierst du das Leben
deiner Kinder?
Wieviele Leute sollen ertrinken?
Wieviele Lastwagen?
Unter den Nazis,
wie hat man die serbischen Juden ermordet?
Hauptsächlich mit Lastwagen.
Man hat ihnen irgend etwas versprochen.
Die Kinder hat man mit Zuckerln getröstet.
Und dann auf der Fahrt
gingen die Auspuffgase ins Innere.
Die Methode war praktisch.
Keine langen Eisenbahnwege,
das war zu der Zeit
auch gar nicht mehr sicher.
Wieviele Lastwagen,
wieviele Menschen?
Wieviele Nazis
waren aus Österreich?
Wieviele können sich noch erinnern,
im ehemaligen Jugoslawien,
in Griechenland?
Österreich hat die Balkan-Route verstopft.
Es ist eine Schande.

SUNSHINE IN WARSAW

A beautiful summer morning. Biking through the historical center. The bike return station is next to the monument of the 1944 uprising against the Nazis. HOW many dead and wounded, while the Red Army literally stood by on the outskirts of town? And the city dynamited and emptied of its population…you would never think it, looking at it now.
Across the street, inside a church, a simple and gut- wrenching memorial to the Katyn massacre victims. With a side memorial for the Smolensk plane crash of 2010, which I fail to understand. Must ask a local where they see the connection- if they do.
And what a tough people: exiled, murdered, bombed, map redrawn…yet they rebuilt splendidly from the rubble while still dirt- poor and were the first to put up meaningful nonviolent resistance to the Soviets back in 1980. And had free elections as soon as they could.
Swinoujscie – Swinemünde had public exhibits around town about their common history with Germany, bilingual. A strongly German city which was bombed flat 55% for being a naval base. No mention of the pre-war German population in Warsaw, though…
The Warsaw “Stalin cake” / Palace of Culture and Science is still on the grounds of the Jewish ghetto. That uprising was in 1943. A few meters of markings on the ground to show where its outer wall once stood. That is all.
ATTITUDE, EMPATHY AND SO ON

People are trying to get by everywhere. First World vs. Third World (or Second World) creates issues of privilege. Just like different kinds of background, experience, heritage make for issues of disconnect within a common country or region. Why are people stupid enough to vote for or even work with racist rightist arseholes in Hitler-spawning Austria? Austria-Hungary-Germany whatever? My friends in China try to get by. Like people everywhere. Some get to express how they detest the state they are in. Some more than others. Like people anywhere, more or less. Some have their audience, as famous poets or fiction writers. Yes, things have improved very much in Taiwan, and in China there is the same repression going on in some ways. Yes, everyone is taking part more or less, including foreigners. All in all, foreign media is a good influence. Most of it. Everywhere probably, in every country, reporting from any outsider’s stance or background can be very refreshing. I was privileged in Taiwan and in China, in Eastern Europe, even in America. On the other hand, I am in between. Every day I talk and work with people and texts from different worlds. It’s a great life, all in all.

This is a very good article. One of the few very inspiring responses to these horrible attacks in Paris. I was involved in another response – I translated a text by Liao Yiwu 廖亦武, a Chinese writer in exile in Germany. I put it in a blog post here some two weeks ago, along with words by “Charb” from Charlie Hebdo and others. Liao Yiwu’s text first appeared in German in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. It is also available in English, on the website of the German Book Trade Organization. This response should equally be read by as many people as possible! Thank you very much, Soh Wee Ling! I went demonstrating in Vienna on January 11, and again on Friday, January 30, when the xenophobe Neo-Nazis had their ball in the historic halls of the Hofburg in Vienna, overlooking the Heldenplatz where Hitler spoke to eradicate Austria in 1938, cheered by thousands. We were around 5000-6000 at least all over the centre of Vienna, although the police had cordoned off a large area and many people had been arrested and criminalized last year. No windows broken this time, and hardly anyone injured. Some people always get angry, and there are Neo-Nazi sympathizers in the police and in parliament. And they have been tolerated and cosseted, and they were in government 2000-2006. Recently an editor of the newspaper Der Standard, which has been very much against the fascists, has actually suggested that the Social Democrats should consider working with the F-Party. In Germany, their slogans would not be allowed, and some of their leaders would be in prison. On the other hand, we have a cherished tradition of fierce satire in Austria. I read an article by the Jewish French-German writer Gina Lustiger, published in Die Welt. She also said, just like you Soh Wee Ling, that the Charlie Hebdo cartoons were aimed at the average French citizens, including the cartoonists themselves. She said she missed them very much, missed their incisive humour. And she emphasized that unless the French Jewish victims were equally respected, even if their relatives had them buried abroad, people had not understood what this was about. Unless you can imagine Charlie as a Turkish woman in a head scarf at a funeral in Jerusalem, she said. Thank you very much again!
