AUDIENCE AND MASSACRE

IS THERE A GOOD WAY TO (TRANSLATE) POETRY?

Is there a way?
Is there a good way?
Is there a good way to poetry?
Is there a good way to translate poetry?
Why not?
Depends on the poetry.
The source poetry,
the target poetry.
The audience
and the massacre.
Maghiel van Crevel’s translation
of Han Dong’s Big Wild Goose Pagoda
is perfect.
Both pagodas are perfect.
Maybe the small one
retains more of the flavor
of Xi’an 20 or 30 years ago.
Haven’t been to the small one in many years.
Nicky Harman’s translation quoted by Xujun Eberlein
in the LA Review of Books
should have no quite in my opinion
only quiet.
Otherwise it is perfect.
Is there a good way to translate poetry?
Into what?
Mashed potatoes?
If I’m not a poet
in target poetry
– how many shots for a dollar?
If the person in charge
doesn’t produce competent targets
why do they buy them?
Is there a way?
Is there a good way to poetry?
Depends on the poetry.
The source poetry, the target poetry.
The audience and the massacre.

P.S.: Pls refer to Shen Haobo’s REPUBLIC. Maybe his best poem. Maybe my best translation.

Thank you,
Martin

PRAYER

sacred light wherever you are
let me stand look at peace
you are a tree thicket shrub
you are a house
you are the sparkle
you are the splendour
heard with the birds
sacred light wherever you are
let us stand look at peace
you are time
you are space
you are the heavens
in our hearts
sacred light wherever you are
grant us peace grant us wonder
grant us work
grant us leisure intercourse
grant us listening to each other
amen

GEBET

heiliges licht wo immer du bist
lass mich stehen stille schauen
du bist ein baum ein busch ein strauch
du bist ein haus
du bist der glanz
du bist die pracht
im vogelruf
heiliges licht wo immer du bist
lass uns stehen stille schauen
du bist die zeit
du bist der ort
du bist der himmel
in unseren herzen
heiliges licht wo immer du bist
gib uns stille gib uns staunen
gib uns arbeit
gib uns muße spiel gespräche
gib uns aufeinanderhören
amen

QINGHAI LAKE SAND DUNES

become quiet
they become quiet
sand dunes become quiet
each day after sunset
tourists are welcome
get to play in the sun
sand dunes are waiting
till people are done
