Dear poetry fans,
On Febr. 10, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung published my article on the poet Nan Ren 南人 (scroll to p. 5; there are a few minor mistakes in the German article, I couldn’t see the final print version before it came out: the first poem has one line added; and Shaanxi became Shanxi). Last week I decided to write a version in English for the MCLC Resource Center.
This is a newspaper article, so there are no footnotes. The reference to Maghiel van Crevel was not included in the German print version. I have thought about many names of poets I should have mentioned, and other things I should have said. Anyway, such a publication in a major daily in Germany is a big success, a big deal in international exposure for current Chinese poetry. I hope you like it. Please comment, thank you!
Sources: Here is a link to the poems in the article including the original Chinese versions. And here are some of the paintings by Huang Li 黄丽 that accompany the poems in the book. The pictures look much better in the book. Nan Ren has sent them to me in high resolution. He and Xiron have authorized me to look for publishers in Europe and beyond. I hope to find publishers for the German speaking and for the English speaking Pawnshop. Here is a link to about 50 poems in Chinese with some translations in English or German. Here is a link to the announcement from last May, when the book was published in China. The publisher is Xiron Poetry Club, 磨铁读诗会. Xiron is a big publisher, led by the poet Shen Haobo 沈浩波. But Xiron is private and has to purchase an ISBN for each book from a state publisher. The state publisher is on the cover, Xiron Poetry Club is on the first page. Both have to avoid publishing anything that could get the book pulled or forbidden.
IN A PAWNSHOP OF PAIN
Nan Ren is a legend. He doesn’t like to say when he was born. 1970, found that somewhere. Not important. Nan Ren is a pen name. The nán of ‘south‘ and the rén of ‘person‘. What does that mean? His family comes from the south, somewhere south of the Long River, the Yangtse. Nanren, southern people, was the lowest stratum in the Mongol empire. The Mongols captured the south last, all the better jobs had been assigned to other people already. Almost every poet writing in Chinese has a pen name. People have more than one name in Chinese, even non-artists. It was that way in Confucius‘ times. And in the occident, people also had several names, at least prominent people, all the way from Homer.

PASSING THROUGH THE NORTH GATE WITH A MOUTH FULL OF VINEGAR
Got off the bus,
into the supermarket,
didn’t know what to buy,
bought a bottle of cheap vinegar.
Paid,
opened the bottle,
drank a sip,
wanting to swallow.
Then I remembered,
holding white vinegar in your mouth
can clean up the gums
and stains on the teeth.
So with that sip
in my mouth,
I walked back home
through the north gate of our compound.
The guard over there
likes to greet me and say a few words.

I looked strange,
so he asked what was wrong.
But I still had
my mouth full of vinegar,

WANG WEI
His name is actually
Wang Youwei.
Literally that means
King with a tail,
or Wang with a tail.
He is a poet
in today’s Xi’an.
Wang Wei is the great
Tang dynasty poet.
His grave is outside of Xi’an,
the former Tang dynasty capital Chang’an,
in a somewhat derelict factory.
The factory makes
something for spaceflight,
so it is secret,
big signs anounce that.
There is a roadside restaurant
called Wang Wei’s Grave.
It belongs to the factory.
In a galaxy far, far away,
we all sneaked in together,
to recite poetry
under the tree
that Wang Wei planted
thirteen hundred years ago
or so.
It was a great dynasty
in retrospect.
That’s why I call
Wang Youwei
Wang Wei,
I just can’t help it.

维马丁
西毒何殇译
他的名字其实是
王有尾。
字面意思是
长着尾巴的国王，
或者有条尾巴的王。
他是一个诗人
在今天的西安。
王维是伟大的
唐代诗人。
他的坟墓在西安郊外，
即唐朝的都城长安，

GRAND NARRATIVE vs PERSONAL NARRATIVE
In the morning I talked to my wife
about the year
when they buried Deng Xiaoping.
My wife wondered
why she didn’t remember that at all.
I said on that day
all students in our school
stood with white flowers
under the classroom building
watching the tribute on TV.
I was talking too much,
conversed with a neighbor.
The director saw me,
pulled me out,
kicked me twice in the legs
in front of the whole school.
I stood alone
fixing my eyes
on the service for the whole time.
Such an experience
how could I forget that?

汉语先锋·2021年度最佳诗歌100首｜维马丁《致西毒何殇》入选理由：又是一首外国人用中文写的诗，来自奥地利诗人、翻译家维马丁。这首诗非常中国，读来竟有某种中国古典诗歌的意境。一首短短的致友诗，其中包含着多重难以名状的情绪，有对友情的怀念，有对昔日不再有的怅惘，有对时代的忧伤，有对丢失事物的缅怀，有祝福，有叹息，娓娓道来，融为一体，万般滋味，化作绕指柔。其中有妙笔，尤其扣人心弦——“在那棵树下，我们多小。”(磨铁读诗会)

Letztes Jahr hast du tolle Gedichte geschrieben,
und einen Roman, schaut großartig aus!

unser Foto zusammen
beim Grab von Wang Wei,
vor dem großen Baum.
Unter dem Baum
sind wir alle so klein!
Das war ein herrlicher Ausflug,
wir haben jeder Gedichte geschrieben.
Zwei Jahre sind vergangen,
fühlt sich an wie zehn.
Es ist eine andere Zeit.
Der Baum
steht wahrscheinlich noch dort,
wir Menschen von damals
sind noch am Leben,
aber mir kommt vor
wir haben etwas verloren,
und zwar nicht nur die Jahre.
Hoffe, Dir gehts gut!

ZAHNPASTA UND FLÜSSIGE SEIFE
Seit meine Frau die Zahnpasta
in einer Flasche hat
dort auf dem Waschbecken
hab ich schon oft
die Zahnpasta
als flüssige Seife verwendet.
Später hab ichs mir
extra vorgesagt,
links ist die Zahnpasta,
rechts ist die flüssige Seife,
rechts, rechts!
Am Ende hab ich
mir die Hände gewaschen
und auf die Zahnbürste
die flüssige Seife geschmiert.

Der Mann in mittleren Jahren
der gegen Abend
auf dem Parkplatz unterm Baum
den Bauch herausstreckt
sich breitbeinig hinstellt
seinen Schwanz herausholt –
Ich kenn ihn nicht
kann doch nicht vermeiden
noch ein paarmal hinzuschauen.
Er hat die Haltung
zum Urinieren
aber es kommt nichts.
Sein Ausdruck
als ob er nachdenkt
sich erinnert
auf etwas wartet
aber nicht
wie beim Urinieren.
Die Augen schauen
ins Abendlicht.
Leute gehen hin und her
das worauf er wartet
das kommt nicht daher.
Er tut so als ob.
Diese Haltung zum Leben
zur Peinlichkeit
ich glaub wir sind alle recht ähnlich.

Zigaretten herausholt
eine zwischen den Fingern hält
und sich umschaut
in jede Richtung.
Alle gehen schnell vorbei,
die meisten mit Mundschutz.
Er schaut gewichtig
noch einmal in die Runde.
Kurz bevor
ich an ihm vorbeikomm,
nehm ich meinen Mundschutz herunter,
hol extra mein Feuerzeug heraus,
zünd mir eine an,
geh ganz gemütlich.
Aber obwohl unsere Schultern
einander fast streifen,
macht er nicht den Mund auf
und fragt mich
um Feuer.

STOLZ
Unser einziger Stolz
ist, dass wir lachen über Leute in Wien,
die gehen mit Bannern auf die Straße
und protestieren ihr Leben sei schlecht.
Wenn unser Leben nicht gut ist,
gehen wir nie auf die Straße,
murren nur wir sind nicht fleißig genug.
Und manchmal halt,
egal ob wir leben,
dürfen wir gar nicht auf die Straße.

people in our compound
didn’t dare to sleep in their flats
they moved into tents
the contractor from the eight floor
came out to tell us:
“you don’t have to worry,
I built this myself!
all good material!
if every house in xi’an collapses
this one will still stand …”

“otherwise why would I live here,

THE GUY WHO SELLS SWEET POTATOES IS GONE
only the sweet potato oven is there
on the side of the road
baking by itself
next to the oven
a long line of people
but
the guy who sells sweet potatoes is gone
there is a girl with paper boxes
there is a boy who squats by the road
with a stand selling tangerines
and the cart shouting out stinky tofu
dusk and the scenes of departure
pressed into juice
by the crowd of the evening
parking lot auntie putting her life on the line
chasing a fee-dodging audi
at the bus stop
people coming to blows
only the line at the sweet potato oven
stays in perfect order
but the guy who sells sweet potatoes is gone

nur der süßkartoffelofen
steht noch an der straße
bäckt alleine weiter
vor dem ofen
eine lange schlange
aber
der süßkartoffelverkäufer ist weg
da ist ein mädchen mit papierschachteln
da hockt ein mann auf der straße
und verkauft mandarinen
und der stinktofu-karren preist laut seine ware
und die menge am abend
presst ihren saft
aus dämmerung und szenen des fahrens
die tante vom parkplatz
riskiert ihr leben,
verfolgt einen audi, der nicht bezahlt hat
an der bushaltestelle
ist eine schlägerei
nur vor dem süßkartoffelofen
steht eine stille geordnete schlange
aber der süßkartoffelverkäufer ist weg
