THIS MONTH
This month I didn’t write much,
Hardly wrote anything.
I wrote about last year last month,
The demolitions last year in June.
Small local chief
Destroys international art.
Also this year.
For me, the main difference
Is I am not there.
I didn’t go,
Stayed with wife and child.
And so I didn’t
Write very much.

AWAY
Away from the environment,
how do I write in Chinese?
Especially a foreigner!
Looking at photos

I realize again
when friends take a picture
they want to remember,
remember beauty,
being together,
and also
the vapid aggression,
destruction and ruin.

In English I can talk about writing in any language, also English, while being away from the environment. I wrote this poem in Chinese in response to what happened last year and this year at a certain place in China. But the absurd aggression, the senseless destruction and ruin could also be Trump and Musk’s ‘work’, right? Or Putin and so on.

2024.6.22
I wrote a poem titled What in June 2024, when they had almost finished demolishing Shangyuan Art Museum in a village near Huairou outside of Beijing. I was there as a resident artist. Poetry is important at this place. Some of the founders of Shangyuan Art Museum were poets, including Cheng Xiaobei, the most prominent representative of the museum in China. I was invited for my poetry, this and last year. Mostly for poetry in Chinese. The poem What is 我 in Chinese. 我 doesn’t mean ‘what’, but the two words sound somewhat similar. The Chinese poem came first.
The poem is rather repetitive. Wo daodi shi shenme ren, zenmeyang the ren? This is the first two lines in the official Romanization for Mandarin Chinese. Romanization means using an equivalent to the characters in Latin letters, more or less. Letters of European languages with diacritical lines for the tones. There are four tones in Mandarin Chinese, plus the absence of a tone in some syllables. I am not using the diacritical marks here for now. ‘Wo’ in this poem is in the third tone. It is a little drawn out, so ‘wo’ sounds rather like ‘woah’. ‘Woah’, what is this?
Guo daodi shi shenme rén, zenmeyang de rén? I started to write ‘the’ in front of ‘rén’ just now. Rén means human or person. The tone in rén goes up, a bit like a question. Zenmeyang means ‘how is it’, it can be a greeting. The ‘z’ is not a voiced ‘s’, it’s rather like saying ‘tsih tsih’ when you imitate a bird or a cricket, a chirping sound. Tsen meh yang, three syllables. How, in what way, how is it, what kind of? The ‘of’ in ‘what kind of’ is ‘de’ in Chinese. Written d-e, but it sounds very similar to ‘the’, like in What the flower are you talking about?
Guo and ‘wo’ are both one-character words. Each character is one syllable in Chinese. Guo is pot. A pot for cooking, or a pan. A wok. Guo daodi shi shenme ren? Shenme is ‘what’. Daodi is something like ‘actually’, literally ‘at the bottom’ or ‘in the end’. Shi is pronounced without a vowel, or rather like ‘ugh’ after a ‘shsh’. Shi means ‘to be’, ‘is’. Pot actually is what person? What kind of person?

WHAT
What person
what kind of person
what kind of person
am I in the end
What person
what kind of person
what kind of person
is pot in the end
What person
what kind of person
what kind of person
is snail in the end
What person
what kind of person
what kind of person
is moth in the end
What person
what kind of person
what kind of person
is ant in the end
What person
what kind of person
what kind of person
lies down in the end
What person
what kind of person
what kind of person
stands up in the end
What person
what kind of person
what kind of person
crawls in the end
Can I please
take a rest first
Can I please
wait until tomorrow
Can I please
wait till next week
Can I please
just wait a little
Please can I
wait
MW June 23rd, 2024
There is a lot of repetition. Maybe that’s the main drawback. I just haven’t figured out how to make something with less repetition and the same effect otherwise.
What is this about? Why is this person asking these questions? Why the request for being allowed to wait in the end? What does it have to do with the demolition of the museum?
I am glad there is no obvious direct connection. No, there is no specific hidden explanation either, none that I am aware of. I wrote many poems at the time, one per day on average. They are all rather different. More realist, less strange. More directly connected to my reality. But I think there is a strong connection.

WOAH?
Das chinesische Gedicht war zuerst da.
维马丁 ist mein chinesischer Name. Weh Mahding, so klingt es ungefähr. Martin Winter auf Deutsch oder Englisch.
Alles andere geht so:
Wo 我
Wo daodi shi shenme ren
zenmeyang de ren
Guo 锅 daodi shi shenme ren
zenmeyang de ren
Woniu daodi
shi shenme ren
zenmeyang de ren
….
Hudie 蝴蝶, ungefähr ‘huuhdi-eh’, sind Schmetterlinge.
Mayi 蚂蚁, ungefähr ‘maah-iih’.
warten?

warten?

I am in Vienna. From April till late June I was in China, in the countryside near Huairou, northeast of Beijing. I was invited by Shangyuan Art Museum. They built that place from 2003 to 2007. It’s like a sprawling campus. They invited artists there each year, all kinds. Cui Jian, other rock musicians, experimental sound projects. Painting, sculptors, dancing, film, photography, performance. And poetry. That’s where I came in. I was there last year too, in spring and in fall.
They demolished the big exhibition hall in June. The village party committee. In concordance with policy laid down by Winnie the Poo.
It took me a while to write down something a little longer than a poem.
I know it’s rather strange. I wanted to write much more. And I did, in poems in June, when it happened. I miss our community of artists. Being there at that time was living on a different planet. Not just different from Vienna. Different from Beijing, from the village around it, from the mountains. Even very different from being next door in the other places built by artists on the same hill and existing with the same village and party functionaries. It was and is crazy, but it is at the same time a very ordinary situation in China. There is no reason, no feasible reason for the demolition. 没文化, yes. No culture. In the structure of the state, as it comes out here. As it comes out in many places. In sharp contrast to itself, to the image the state also needs to project. Nothing new. Same inherent brutality as ever in the last 100 years maybe. Or more. Playing out in different ways. Not just in China.
I can’t write it like this, not without a lot of context. My poems are more balanced, hopefully. This text, as it has appeared in German, as I can show you in English, is like a long poem. It has to be strange.

sixty years late, seventy, eighty.
What happened in China?
What is happening now?
It’s very different
when you are there.
The feeling is different.
You know you don’t know,
you don’t know most of it.
But there is so much.
So much beauty.
So much companionship,
most of the time.
Nobody was injured,
she sings in her song,
there in the ruins,
up on the mountain.
No one was injured.
Everyone was.
Everyone is
in different ways.
It’s great to be there
among the people
most of the time.
To be a stranger
in a strange land
among many strangers
in their own country.
I am a stranger
in my own country
most of the time.
But I’m not sure,
not like in China.
It is just different.
MW August 2024

Aufgenommen was ging.

Martin

Yes, most posts from July are about what happened in June. I know it happens all the time, people told me a lot. I have seen it before, just didn’t live at the demolition site then.

Most of us there became poets. Seth wrote some good ones, here are two:

UNICORN
It’s a horse
in a cloud,
it is foam
from the sea,
Aphrodite,
a unicorn.

it is a flower,
can it grow up

wird es ein Mensch?

Hard times are coming
Or so I’m told
time to start packing away

Promise me
Seth Deacon
All you believers,
All you soldiers for a cause,
those of you who would build nations and tear them down
Those of you who are so sure
Of the line between us and them.
Between you and I.
(Even if you and I were once lovers, sisters, brothers)
Promise me you won’t make the world too small.
Because I am very much afraid
Of what happens when all of our fists and chests constrict so tightly we cannot breathe,
Never mind sing to each other.
I am afraid of what we’ll see in the mirror once there are no more enemies to look at
I am afraid I will never get to see you again
Or that if I do,
We will both be so changed we will not recognise each other
Or worse
We will be so changed we will not be able to look each other in the eye,
Because we will be too alike

WEH
Das Shangyuan Art Museum
liegt weit von der Stadt
auf dem Land in der Natur
gleich bei den Bergen.
Heuer ist es auch ganz nah
an der Gewalt.
Der absurden Gewalt
hinter der Gesellschaft.
Viel zu nah.
Man hat es betrogen.
Man hat ihm Gewalt angetan.
Die Berge bleiben,
das Unkraut steht tief.
Das Museum ist hin,
was soll weiter gehen?
Kunst machen
heisst immer
am Abgrund stehen,
gleich hinter der Gesellschaft.
Manchmal halt zu nah.
Jeder weiss das.
Wenn es passiert,
tut es
weh.

HURT
Shangyuan Art Museum
lies far from the city,
close to the country,
close to nature,
very close to the mountains.
This year it is also
very close to violence,
to senseless absurdity
in its society.
It just got too close.
It got fucked over,
it got violated.
The mountains are there,
the weeds are deep.
Art lies destroyed.
How can it go on?
To be an artist
has always meant
to be close
to a gaping hole
that lies just behind.
We know.
And when it happens,
it hurts.

ZEICHEN
Letztes Jahr im April,
als ich angekommen bin
im Shangyuan Art Museum,
da geh ich entlang
an der Ausstellungshalle
bis nach hinten zur kleinen Brücke.
Auf der linken Seite
ist eine hohe graue Mauer
mit Stacheldraht oben.
Wie ein Gefängnis.
Ich hab gefragt,
was ist da drüben?
Das ist das Haus
des Dichters Xi Chuan.
Aber er ist nie da,
er war noch nie da.
Seltsame Sache.
Ich hab nicht nachgefragt.
Jetzt ist die Ausstellungshalle weg.
Von der Bibliothek
nach hinten
über die Ruinenfläche
sieht man deutlich
die graue Mauer.
Ich glaub darauf
könnte man schreiben,
vielleicht nur ein Zeichen.
Shame, so wie shameless,
also schamlos.
Scham oder Schande, ein Zeichen.
Links ein Ohr, daneben ein Herz.
Natürlich habe ich keine Ahnung,
was alles dahinter steht.
Wahrscheinlich sehr viel.
Aber ich hab mir immer gedacht,
die Mauer ist hässlich.
Und jetzt gibt es Platz,
ganz viel Platz.
Jetzt wär der Effekt
ziemlich gut.

NATÜRLICH
Der Künstler
aus Serbien sagt,
das erste Mal hier,
das war vor acht Jahren.
Er konnte kein Chinesisch.
Er spazierte weit hin und her.
Er dachte, China,
besonders auf dem Land,
sei viel besser als Europa.
Zurück daheim
hat er das immer erzählt.
Jetzt meint er,
überall auf der Welt
sind die Leute ungefähr gleich.
Was er früher gedacht hat,
davon glaubt er nichts mehr.
Ich hör zu und denk mir,
das klingt ganz natürlich.

EIN TREFFEN
Der Wanderarbeiter fragt,
was war denn dort drüben?
Ich verstehe nicht.
Er sagt, er ist erst nach
dem großen Abriss gekommen.
Ein Museum, sag ich,
eine große Galerie.
Ich weiß nicht, ob er versteht.
Aber er weiß,
das ist ein abgelegenes Dorf.
Wir können hier auch
nichts Besseres mieten.
Ich wünschte, ich hätte
ihn nicht wegen dieser Sache
getroffen.

STARS
Last night someone
put down many candles
on the ruins.
Then they stood there,
played a violin
and recited a Psalm.
Mother and daughter.
At the end two poets
did some of their stuff.
The candles are fine,
like the moon, don’t be scared,
the candles are fine in the ruins.
You can play your violin,
you can sing,
you can recite
whatever you like.

HURT
Shangyuan Art Museum
lies far from the city,
close to the country,
close to nature,
very close to the mountains.
This year it is also
very close to violence,
to senseless absurdity
in its society.
It just got too close.
It got fucked over,
it got violated.
The mountains are there,
the weeds are deep.
Art lies destroyed.
How can it go on?
To be an artist
has always meant
to be close
to a gaping hole
that lies just behind.
We know.
And when it happens,
it hurts.

more than a week
after we knew
we have been worried.
Yesterday we had
a last exhibition.
Today was the second

to eat and have fun.

The demolition is going ahead.
I am feeling
mainly just tired.

CHARACTER
Last year in April
when I first came
and walked through the campus
of Shangyuan Art Museum
from the front to the back
along the big exhibition hall
to the small bridge
on the left
there was a wall
a tall grey wall
crowned with barbed wire.
Looked like a prison.
What is this
I asked.
It is the house
of the poet Xi Chuan.
But he never comes
he’s never been here.
I didn’t ask more.
Now there is no exhibition hall.
From the library
from the back door
you can see over the ruins
all the way
to that grey wall.
There is enough space
to write on the wall.
Maybe just one character
maybe “shame”.
That “shame” of “no shame”.
Yes I do know
that I don’t know
very much at all.
There must be reasons
why it went this way.
But now there is room
there is very much space
now the effect
could be not bad.

MEETING
The worker in front of my building asks,
what was there before?
He points at the ruins.
I don’t understand.
He came in after the big demolition,
he says.
A museum,
a very big gallery.
I’m not sure he understands.
But he knows
we couldn’t rent anything better
than the buildings still standing
in this faraway village.
I wish we could have met
under different circumstances.

of the engine.
My father says,
don’t give it to him,
you know where he’ll take it?
I guess he will sell it.
It seems like we are
the only two people
who live in this place.

SHANGYUAN ART MUSEUM
Wie lange dauert eine Liebe?
Wie lange dauert ein Leben?
Wie lange steht ein Museum?
Wie viele Generationen?
Zwanzig Jahre sind lang.
Zwanzig Jahre sind ein paar Tage,
ein paar Sommer.
Es war schön mit Euch,
es waren Monate,
Tage im Licht.
So viele Vögel,
große Bäume,
grüne Berge.
Es war ein sehr schönes Museum.

IT HAS BEGUN
It has begun,
breaking the windows
to sell them for scraps.
Art is
making
windows.
When they demolish
the art museum,
these windows
won’t be recycled.

EXHIBITION
Yesterday we had a great
exhibition,
even with foreign reporters.
A wonderful show
outside the museum.
In the museum
we had performances,
all black and white,
like in Chinese tradition.
They say demolition
begins today.

WAITING
A little hike up the mountain
before it gets dark,
dinner together
and a small campfire.
A friend plays guitar.
I am getting drunk.
In the morning
the wonderful mountains.
It’s a clear day,
soon getting hot.
Will they demolish
the big one today?
We can only wait.

DEMOLISH
What is the opposite
of soft power?
Burning bridges?
Beijing Shangyuan Art Museum
has been a bridge
for international relations
in art and culture
for twenty years.
Yesterday and today
here at the museum
people came to measure buildings
slated for demolition.
Everything must go!
Everyone!
This hill is for goats
anyway.
No reason given,
no exact date.
Nothing new in this country.
Today’s date
fits rather well.

The city power grid

Before TV screens

I SAW
A guy
with a brush like a broom
writing
on a concrete path in the park.
It dried right away.
Can you say
there is no writing
on the ground?
Do you dare
to say
there is none?
