Chen Fangping
PIONEERS
Two young women
slip into the gynaecology ward.
The doctor asks questions,
every time it’s the escort who answers.
The doctor asks the escort
to wait outside.
But the other woman
walks outside with her.
The doctor gets impatient,
“It’s you who is pregnant,
what are you walking out for?“
In the corridor I saw
the two women adjusting their masks.
In our small town
at the start of the virus
they were the first to hide their faces.

SOUTH MOUNTAIN
Along the road at the foot of South Mountain,
cars are parked everywhere.
While we are climbing,
the sunlight is fine.
There are some other people like us,
wearing face masks,
talking and laughing.
In the city, meeting up is forbidden.
So we sneak off,
two or three at a time,
to the slopes of South Mountain
to get outside and feel the wind.
At the top is the cemetery,
full of dead people.

WATCHING
Virus time means people forward these articles
where good-hearted people remind you
your every word every move every step every act
is being watched.
Who doesn’t know there are people watching?
So these people
should rather be watching this.

MY UNCLE DOESN’T WEAR A MASK
Such a worldwide plague,
not that he’s not afraid to die,
it’s that cancer is like the cold,
the common cold in our village.
Ever since he got liver cancer,
my uncle wears his big belly
like a general
without a care in the world.

CORONA
Manchmal helfen Gedichte
in barbarischen Zeiten.

PROVISIONS
Most supermarkets
have just empty shelves.
Online
meat and vegetables
are hard to find.
Milk and eggs
whole wheat bread
also gone.
Turned out the freezer,
found a surprise, a few jiaozi.
That was from last fall,
mom and dad made them for us
before they went back to China.
Cooked our treasure,
carefully
tried a bite.
Carrot-celery-beef filling,
greatest stuff in the world,
never had
anything better.

GLAUBEN
Jesus, Petrus, Johannes, Magda, Maria
und so weiter
und so weiter
waren Juden.
Jeder weiss, was Juden passiert ist.
Nicht vor 2000 Jahren.
Jeder weiss es.
Da gibts nichts zu glauben,
oder?
Andererseits
Gottesdienst feiern
beten und singen
ist besser als
nur Nachrichten hoeren,
ob dus glaubst oder nicht.
Aber wieder
andererseits
im Standard steht
auf derstandard.at
Frau Koestinger will
Oesterreich aufmachen.
Fuer deutsche Urlauber.
Vor einer Woche
hat sie noch
oeffentliche Gaerten in Wien
fest verschlossen gehalten,
also bis nach Ostern.
Diesselbe Frau.
Oh Gott.

Gao Ge
PHOENIX
It was winter,
snowing.
My dad
stood outside the wall
of the People’s Commune,
waiting for my mom.
Ding-ling-ling,
ding-ling-ling –
A Phoenix bicycle
rings loud and clear,
that isn’t her.
Ga-cha,
Ga-cha –
A scraping chain
against its cover,
another Phoenix,
not her.
Creaking and puffing,
creaking and puffing
white fog
on a Phoenix,
that is her.
At the table,
my dad speaks of this,
this moving love story.
My mum says –
No! Embarrassing!

BLOOD DISAPPEARED
Worked with wood,
squeezed a finger, got a purple bubble out,
very painful.
Wanted to prick it with a needle,
thought of playing my Qin tonight,
just had to leave it.
Played fighting with little son after dinner,
discovered the bubble had long been broken,
didn’t know where the blood had disappeared.
I was rather worried,
looked for the blood
all evening in secret.

Miyuki Kawasaki
KIRSCHBLÜTEN IN WUHAN
Ich bin mit Wuhan verbunden
Ich bin eine Japanerin
die achteinhalb Jahre in Wuhan gelebt hat.
Jangtse-Wasser getrunken.
Wuhan-Nudeln, Lotus, Wuchang-Fisch gegessen.
Kraftvollen, schallenden Dialekt gehört.
Die Gassen der Konzessionsbezirke erforscht, die Gelbe Kranichpagode bestiegen…
Damals
Hab viele Freundschaften geschlossen,
unvergessliche Tage erlebt.
schau täglich online, was in Wuhan los ist,
bald endlich aufgesperrt.
Nachdem tausende Seelen verweht sind.

WRITING
This is
what I do.
Writing.
Reading.
Translating.
Poetry.
As much as possible.
Stories.
Don’t know how much
I can make this year,
maybe very little,
I could run out of money.
Anyway.
I am privileged.
We are privileged,
our family.
No-one is sick,
until now.
At least I hope,
spoke to my mum yesterday.
They are fine, I hope,
my sister lives across the street,
two or three houses down
and across, very close.
They are all fine, I hope,
the whole extended family.
My mother’s brother,
they have a little garden,
they stay there in summer,
maybe they are there now,
it’s a warm day,
and it’s not far, in Vienna.
My cousins, they are at home,
in Vienna, my cousin’s daughters,
all grown up, like my nephews,
my sister’s kids. One’s a doctor,
the oldest, not finished yet,
but he volunteered, he is helping,
at the doors of one hospital,
screening people.
Overall Austria
has been very lucky.
Less than 200 dead
in early April,
about one tenth
of the rate in Germany,
they have been lucky too,
until now.
We can go out,
if we’re careful.
Wearing masks in the stores.
Leo and I,
we ride our bicycles
up the hill every day.
Maia rides her bike,
Jackie stays at home,
goes out in the evening.
We are goddamn lucky.
Easter is coming,
I should watch my language.
Austria
is goddamn lucky.
There I go again, sorry.
We should share
our fair burden
with the EU.
Not sure we are doing that.
Anyway, we are careful,
we help each other,
hopefully.
Some people don’t have enough space
in the city,
not everyone has an open park
right downstairs like we do.
Some parks are closed,
some should be open,
this has been the biggest fight
in this little country.
That and that province,
down in the alps.
Up in the alps, I mean.
People got infected there
in early March,
till the middle of March
some hotels weren’t closed.
Skilifts were running.
So we don’t have a good reputation,
People got infected in Austria.
And the provincial governor
refused to speak to foreign media.
But we are lucky,
people have other problems.
Jobs. Parents. Grandparents.
Kids.
This is what I do,
writing.
Up on our roof,
in the sun.
Meeting neighbours,
talking.
Quite enough room.
Singing downstairs,
in the corridor outside,
with next-door neighbours.
Godawful lucky.

Shen Haobo
ICH LESE EINEN CHINESISCHEN DICHTER
Ich hab seine 90er Jahre
gelesen.
1991
1992
Ich hab angefangen mir Sorgen zu machen.
Warum noch so unausgereift?
Wieso so unentschieden?
Werd endlich fertig,
Dichter.
1993
1994
Ich hab mir mehr und mehr
Sorgen gemacht.
voll Scheiß-leerer Luft?
Die Weltgeschichte
wird nicht auf dich warten.
Poesie steht im Schatten
um Mut zu sammeln.
1995
1996
Die Zeit wird knapper.
1997
1998
Ich hab schon angefangen zu schreiben!
Er ist noch
in Ruhe
gefühlvoll.
Worauf wartest du?
Warum nutzt du
dein Alter nicht aus?
Was ist mit deinem Leben?
Ist es so in der Luft?
Jetzt geht ein Jahrhundert
einfach zu Ende,
was jetzt über bleibt,
da kommt nichts mehr Neues.
1999
2000
Ich hab schon geschrieben, was mich berühmt macht
und damit seine gesamten Gedichte
auf einmal
erledigt.
Jetzt muss ich
um ihn
im Stillen trauern.

YOU SAY WHEN YOU DIE IN FOREIGN PARTS, REEDS IN THE WIND WILL STAND IN – TO A POETRY FRIEND WHO DIED FROM THE VIRUS
Last summer
we walked at the reservoir,
saw how the reeds
swayed in the wind.
Two dragonflies,
one on top of the other,
landed on a reed.
Then
the wind picked up,
they couldn’t stay,
had to fly up
in the wind doing their thing,
one stacked on another
up in the air.

MOON
the moon
is hanging out
in isolation
the moon
is hanging out
in isolation
behind the clouds
over flowering trees
it’s getting cold again

1 POEM/DAY
One poem per day
takes nothing away,
I want to say.
But everything takes time,
every drug,
every mask,
every care.
So one poem per day
could take away
whatever else you would have had.
But then you could
hear it again,
whatever you do,
if it was good.

GRINDING
The world is grinding to a halt.
So are we all madly in love?
Or have we come to our senses
about the climate
between each other?
About working together?
We don’t have a choice.
And we don’t have a choice
in hoping it will soon be over.
And we still let them set our clocks.

ACHTSAMKEIT
Achtsamkeit
hat sehr viel mit Neunsamkeit zu tun,
das sagen alle großen
Neunsamkeitslehrer.
Aber die großen Samenbanken,
die fangen frühestens
ab Zehnsamkeit an,
mit Ihnen zu reden.

Liu Tianyu
A NOVEL THAT BROKE OFF RIGHT AFTER THE START
I cannot help to think of SARS,
how we were quarantined on campus,
couldn‘t get out of our university.
But no-one took it seriously,
day after day we played cards in our rooms.
I began to write a story,
describing love in times of crisis.
The inspiration was when I saw
a couple
kissing through a wire fence.
The way they were trying to find each other’s mouth
through the gaps in the wire,
that’s an impression
I cannot forget.

Li Suo
KURZNACHRICHT AN ALLE
„Einwandfrei“ – A Complaint Free World.
„Gewaltfreie Kommunikation“
(Der Titel sagt alles. Sei ein braver und sanfter Untertan!)

BELOVED WIFE
Each time I say,

you better let me go!“

SIX
At six o’clock we come out on our balconies.
Not everyone,
some people still work outside,
not all are together,
but we come out,
and clapping starts,
right at six in the afternoon,
as if we have accomplished something.
And there are children,
and there is music,
someone starts to sing,
or play a flute and so on.
We wave, and from the balconies
we talk to each other.
In our building we have prepared songs,
lyrics and instruments.
Social distancing has brought us together.
You go up on the roof,
and everything is different,
or very much, like the planes,
no planes anymore.
At six o’clock we come out,
we’re all still alive,
those you see,
I guess we know we’re very fortunate.
We even shared a cake with our neighbours,
fresh from the oven,
set down with gloves
in front of the door.
Little things.
So we play and sing,
I am from Austria.
It’s in Austrian German,
rather sentimental,
never would have thought
we would be singing it from the
balconies.
It is anti-fascist, among other things,
and along with Blue Danube,
it is something you share,
we sing other things too.
And I guess we will remember,
when everything is different
again.

NO TOBOGGANING
It is rather cold outside,
freezing point, not much more,
colder at night.
On the whole it is warmer,
this year we didn’t get out the sleigh,
no tobogganing –
I wonder if there was enough snow now,
would we go up there?
We go by foot after all,
or by bicycle,
although we are very careful
not to get close to anyone
on the roads and on the paths
and to avoid the police.
So if there was enough snow now,
all among the blossoms –
no, let’s hope it gets warmer
and this whole thing,
this horrible spring thing
all over the earth
is over
or at least mostly over by summer.

JEDER TAG
jeder tag ist ein gedicht
wenn du zeit hast
im moment haben viele leute
viel mehr zeit als sonst,
wenn auch nicht unbedingt ruhe.
haben sie einen moment?
ist eine häufige frage
im moment haben viele viele millionen
in vielen erdteilen
etwas gemeinsam.
natürlich ist das auch sonst der fall
aber normalerweise sagt niemand
von dieser situation betroffene aller länder,
lasst uns einander helfen,
so gut wir nur können,
oder was glaubst du?

EVERY DAY
every day
is a poem
if you have time
at the moment there are many people
who have more time
although you still might not have peace and quiet enough.
do you have a moment?
is an everyday question.
at the moment many many millions
in many parts of the earth
have something in common.
actually that was the case long before,
but nobody said
affected people of all nations,
let’s help each other
as best as we can
or did they?
or did we?

FIT MACH MIT
vorige woche ist noch einer durchgeturnt
so wie wir vorher fast jeden tag
durch den motorikpark
bevor sie ihn abgesperrt haben
ich hab ihn gesehen
vielleicht genau vor einer woche
am sonntag in der früh
heute gibt es wieder virtuellen
gottesdienst
nehm ich an
vielleicht mach ich eh mit
wir machen jeden tag ein gedicht
im literadio
mach mit wenn du willst

VÖGEL
vögel singen wie früher
wieder ein strahlender märztag
im vogelleben
kommt glaub ich unsere seuche nicht vor
vögel haben keine versicherung
vogelfrei
was hat das bedeutet
menschenfrei
manche straßen
ein paar wochen lang
in wien noch nicht wirklich
glaub ich
menschenfrei
wien war judenfrei
haben sie verkündet
als der himmel
frei für die bomben war
und vögel singen wie früher
und österreich ist frei
nicht wahr
