CHARACTER
Last year in April
when I first came
and walked through the campus
of Shangyuan Art Museum
from the front to the back
along the big exhibition hall
to the small bridge
on the left
there was a wall
a tall grey wall
crowned with barbed wire.
Looked like a prison.
What is this
I asked.
It is the house
of the poet Xi Chuan.
But he never comes
he’s never been here.
I didn’t ask more.
Now there is no exhibition hall.
From the library
from the back door
you can see over the ruins
all the way
to that grey wall.
There is enough space
to write on the wall.
Maybe just one character
maybe “shame”.
That “shame” of “no shame”.
Yes I do know
that I don’t know
very much at all.
There must be reasons
why it went this way.
But now there is room
there is very much space
now the effect
could be not bad.

我觉得奇怪
但也不多问

经过废墟
看到后面
灰色的墙
觉得墙上
可以写字
就一个字
也许可以写
恥
无耻的恥
当然有很多
我都不知道
应该有很多
为什么有今天
不过一直觉得
这墙很难看
而现在有空
有很大的空间
现在写
效果好

Dear poetry fans,
On Febr. 10, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung published my article on the poet Nan Ren 南人 (scroll to p. 5; there are a few minor mistakes in the German article, I couldn’t see the final print version before it came out: the first poem has one line added; and Shaanxi became Shanxi). Last week I decided to write a version in English for the MCLC Resource Center.
This is a newspaper article, so there are no footnotes. The reference to Maghiel van Crevel was not included in the German print version. I have thought about many names of poets I should have mentioned, and other things I should have said. Anyway, such a publication in a major daily in Germany is a big success, a big deal in international exposure for current Chinese poetry. I hope you like it. Please comment, thank you!
Sources: Here is a link to the poems in the article including the original Chinese versions. And here are some of the paintings by Huang Li 黄丽 that accompany the poems in the book. The pictures look much better in the book. Nan Ren has sent them to me in high resolution. He and Xiron have authorized me to look for publishers in Europe and beyond. I hope to find publishers for the German speaking and for the English speaking Pawnshop. Here is a link to about 50 poems in Chinese with some translations in English or German. Here is a link to the announcement from last May, when the book was published in China. The publisher is Xiron Poetry Club, 磨铁读诗会. Xiron is a big publisher, led by the poet Shen Haobo 沈浩波. But Xiron is private and has to purchase an ISBN for each book from a state publisher. The state publisher is on the cover, Xiron Poetry Club is on the first page. Both have to avoid publishing anything that could get the book pulled or forbidden.
IN A PAWNSHOP OF PAIN
Nan Ren is a legend. He doesn’t like to say when he was born. 1970, found that somewhere. Not important. Nan Ren is a pen name. The nán of ‘south‘ and the rén of ‘person‘. What does that mean? His family comes from the south, somewhere south of the Long River, the Yangtse. Nanren, southern people, was the lowest stratum in the Mongol empire. The Mongols captured the south last, all the better jobs had been assigned to other people already. Almost every poet writing in Chinese has a pen name. People have more than one name in Chinese, even non-artists. It was that way in Confucius‘ times. And in the occident, people also had several names, at least prominent people, all the way from Homer.

How many months have you had on this world?
If you’re 18, twelve times 18, 216.
My son has just figured it out.
He is two months older now,
218.
How many days have you had on this world?
218 times 30, and a few more.
January has 31 days, February 28, March 31. So those three each have 30.
May has 31 days, July and August too,
that’s three days more than average.
Halloween and December 31, that’s two more.
Five days more
than 30 days each month every year.
18 times these five days, 90 days.
218 x 30, how much is that?
Say 220 times 30, that’s 6600.
Then 60 less.
6540, now plus 90.
6630, plus a few days.
He is born on March 14.
So it is how many more? 16, 17 days?
6647?
How many hours is that?
What if it was 6700 days?
That would be 6700 times 24.
6700 times 20, 134,000
Plus 6700 x 4, 26,800.
That would be 160,800.
But it was less. 53 days less.
53 x 24, 20 x 53 is 1060,
plus 4 x 53, that’s 212, right?
So 1272 hours less.
1272 minus 800, ok? 472.
160,000 – 472, 159528. Right?
One hundred sixty thousand hours
give or take, if you’re 18.
Now how old are you?
Years are enough, for most of us.

母亲节
高铁上可以写诗吗
前天喝酒还没恢复
明天又是母亲节呢
德语已经写了一首
给了母亲
估计不能翻译
不提到母亲
主要写蒲公英
英语叫dandelion
我母亲喜欢花
喜欢小野花
跟父母住那时候
我早上出去摘一些野花
最普通的，不会缺少的
回家给母亲
花很多还比蒲公英小
dandelion 这个词
原来是狮子牙齿的意思
德语 Löwenzahn 一样
所以我写了狮子牙疼
老鼠牙疼兔子牙疼
山羊牙疼
然后写了一种仙子
英语叫 tooth fairy
小孩掉牙
她会晚上把牙齿拿走
也许留一个硬币
其实当然是父母做的
我在狮子牙加一个音节
变成狮子牙仙子
又变成蒲公英种子
百度说
花语是无法停留的爱
在迪士尼电影里
小孩出生第一次笑
那些花的种子
变成仙子
飞走了
德语诗很短
刚好有十行
还有押韵
其实不能翻译
为啥要写牙痛
有牙齿的动物

伊沙推荐语：这一个雅座，何其妙哉！最妙的，一定来自于生活，而非大脑。有人想跟我学口语诗，恕我不线上设坛开讲，看我推荐的诗，让孩子教你，没感觉，教不会，就算了，就当人生中多了一次试错。
况禹点评《新诗典》张致臻《雅座》:我的一个小学兼初中同学，有次回忆对我小时的印象说，“我经常一走出教室，就看见他在门口被罚站。”此诗让我想起了童年的那段岁月，还好，诗中的小朋友遇到了一个风趣的好老师，接着又成就了一位新一代小诗人。

在我的个人经验里，这是一首挺具有代表性的“后口语诗”。
1.这首诗是典型的“事实诗意呈现”。它没有用到任何传统的诗歌技巧(但不代表它没有技巧)。眼中看到什么，就站在诗的角度，去写什么。这种类型的诗，其实非常考验写作者的“现代性诗感”。作者只有16岁，可喜可贺！
2.这首诗有“智趣”。评价一首“现代性口语诗”的优劣，可以从很多个方面进入。从我个人角度讲，其中有一个很核心的层面，那就是“智趣”。
“智趣”其实是很难的。自然天成，趣味弥漫，诗意彰显。这很不好写。
因为这和写作者的“心灵能量”相关。据我目力所及，恰恰是很多成熟的写作者很难写出非常自然的“智趣”作品。主要是因为在写作一首诗时，思考的问题太多。(尤其是精神性、社会化和情感性问题)
3.这首诗的语言也非常好。它都是落地的。整首诗没有任何“虚空”的词。小作者更没有想去“写”诗，他只是非常老实地“呈示”画面。
在我个人看来，这个路子是非常正确的。他一出笔，就直接进入了“现代性”文学语言。
现在，很多小朋友写诗或文(我一直在关注)，受书本、应试和教学影响，一出手就进入了“词语”里。这非常要命！这种思维，从一定意义上讲，很难成为真正意义上的写作者！
即使以后有机缘，他进入了“写作语境”里。自我还要从头反思和重新校订。
4.这首诗的标题也非常好。“雅座”与诗中的内容形成了非常紧密的“链接”。增加了本诗的“智趣”，提升了它的“诗歌色彩感”。

马金山｜读张致臻的诗《雅座》的十一条：
1、发现，是写作的基础；
2、每一首好诗，都将会是情感的宝藏，这个世界重要的一部分；
3、张致臻，2006年12月生于北京，现就读于厦门五中初二年级。诗作入选《新世纪诗典》等；
4、张致臻的诗，善于捕捉身边的事物，并以口语化的方式，写生活，写好玩的，写自己感受到的东西，故在诗里行间，最易触及到事物质感的部分，尤显珍贵与惊喜；
5、本诗中的情节，很容易引起共鸣，因为在几代人的教育过程中，或多或少都会碰见这样的情况，而此诗的呈现，再次给我们提了个醒，任何时候，生活中再平常的事物，都是现代诗最好的素材；
6、诗一开头，显得格外引人注目，在特定的环境中制造出一个巨大的场景，让人感觉到严重，且又唤起了不少人的记忆；
7、紧接着，进行了很大的调整，这既是因为这位同学的表现决定的，也是老师忽然意识到了什么，总之，让人觉察到了什么；
8、诗中没有交待“被罚”同学具体犯了什么错，也没有真正意义上的有效惩罚，却写出了极其复杂而又微妙的教育现场；
9、结尾部分，在幽默风趣的话语中，足见老师的仁爱之心，以及轻松愉快的教育现场和内心变化；
10、本诗给予诗人的启示：“触及人心的感觉，就是诗的源头”；
11、教育之诗、现场之诗、感觉之诗。

伊沙推荐语：猴子是最接近人的低等动物，猴子的动物性最接近于人性，所以本诗貌似是在写动物性，实则是在深刻地揭露人性，当获9月下半月亚军。

庞琼珍读《新世纪诗典》徐江《杂事诗•24岁时的记忆》：一首让人读完沉思的妙绝的杰作，经过30年的岁月沉淀写出。绝大多数生物包括人和猴子的特性都是群居和从众，这也是现实和环境的残酷所逼。那只可爱的猴子有了一个难得的契机，溜出了笼子，获得了向往的珍贵的自由。可是，它势单力孤啊，落单的恐惧和笼外生存的未知，让它又顺原路回到笼子。这首诗以极朴素的语汇所披露的残酷性，让人深思。这正是诗歌的迷人之处，可以写成万字长篇科学论文，但诗的开放性却让读者自己去完成，千人千读千解千得。
黎雪梅读《新世纪诗典》之徐江《杂事诗.二十四岁时的记忆》：一只机灵的小猴，好不容易逃脱了人类的笼子，可还没等我们替它”久在樊笼里，复得返自然。”的举动喝彩呢，结果不知它是因为受不了独自在外的寂寞无聊，还是习惯了在笼子里衣来伸手饭来张口的好日子，竟然“就又顺着原路/回去了”，简直让人大跌眼镜。不光是这只猴子，在我们的周围又有多少人在关键时刻也做出了如这猴一样的选择，猴性即人性，在这些动物的身上我们能更多地看到人类自身的影子，那隐藏在诗歌语言背后的强大的诗意，只有通过读者的阅读自己去体悟，正是“此中有真意，欲辨已忘言”。

马金山｜读徐江的诗《杂事诗·24岁时的记忆》的十一条：
1、诗人的信仰就是诗，而诗就是诗人的一切；
2、简约是古代诗歌的魅力，甚至是艺术，而在现代诗歌之中，则更是瑰宝；
3、徐江，1967年出生。1991年创办《葵》。曾五获新世纪诗典李白诗歌奖。著有《黄昏前说起天才》《徐江的诗》《花火》《杂事诗》《四季杂事》《雾中杂事》《杂事与花火》《我斜视》《哀歌·金别针》（与侯马合著）《现代诗物语》《这就是诗》《启蒙年代的秋千》等二十多种；

黄平子读诗：这首诗的题目告诉读者，这是一首回忆之诗。徐江生于1967年，24岁就是1991年。“我曾经看到过一只小猴/从猴山的笼子/顺着几颗大树/溜到了笼外”，这是写小猴子出逃。从“顺”、“溜”等字看，小猴子的这次出逃好像是无意的行为。“在不远的围墙边儿/走了一会儿”，这是笼外。笼外的世界好像也没有什么特别。“它回头看着笼子的方向/没有其他猴跟过来/就又顺着原路/回去了”，笼外如果有什么特别的话，就是没有猴子。没有同伴的世界多寂寞啊，这才是最主要的！笼子算什么！

9/11 is like 1989.
People will remember.
20, 30, a hundred years after.
One such year is more than enough
in a lifetime, if you were there
among the carnage
or when the wall came down,
or was opened, at first.
I was on a beach in 1989,
in the winter.
Weeks on a beach,
and Romania burned,
after Czechoslovakia didn’t,
and so on and so on.
A beach in Thailand, sunset beach.
Sunrise is on the other side
of the peninsula.
There is a mountain in between,
and there was one water buffalo left,
as far as I remember.
Krabi, Krabi! crie the boatsmen,
we didn’t go back to Krabi, the nearest town,
for quite a while.
Newspapers were from days ago, a week ago.
It was a marvelous year.
In 1989, I was in Taiwan, and in between, in the US and in Thailand.
In 2001, I was in Beijing.
Jackie worked in the Austrian embassy.
I was teaching and translating.
We saw it on TV, not right away,
as far as I remember.
We talked to friends and relatives
on the phone.
It was two years after 1999,
when Belgrade was bombarded.
They bombed the Chinese embassy,
it’s still not clear why.
I was in China then too,
in Chongqing.
I cried when I saw the towns over there on TV,
it looked too much like home.
They did to Belgrade what the Serbian side
had done to Sarajewo, and other cities,
and there was the massacre of Srebrenica
and so on and so on.
Yugoslavia is the place in Europa
that had no walls coming down in 1989,
rather some going up, more and more.
In 2012 we did a magazine issue here in Vienna,
Headfirst through the Great Wall of China,
or something like that.
It was crazy.
We had Yan Jun for reciting poetry and drama,
and we had Hui Ye, a very versatile local artist, mostly based in Austria.
Yan Jun is a famous poet and experimental musician from Lanzhou,
lives mostly in Beijing, very much on the fringe.
So we were doing a small local magazine,
but we were so excited, we told all the world!
I did, mostly. It was really great.
We had Yugoslavia, mainland China, Taiwan
and a Turkish German author wrote
the Great Wall was a sleeping dragon
that woke up once in a few centuries
and people came to grief.
And the magazine editor wanted to kill that,
thought it was disrespectful.
I don’t think he knew anyone from China.
How is this about 9/11?
9/11 was like 1989, in a way.
Everyone knows what happened in 1989,
or everyone doesn’t,
depends where you are.
There are still thousands of people
who died in New York on that day,
but there are no remnants.
They are still searching for traces.

Du kommst und schaust, mein Gesicht
ist verzerrt von zu wenig Schlaf.
Wie wenn wir zusammen liegen
in derselben Gebärmutter

Auf der Großen Mauer
schreiben die Leute.
Manche mit Kreide,
manche ritzen in die Steine.
Die Kreide ist eigentlich der Mörtel,
der Mörtel zwischen den Ziegeln,
der herausfällt.
Jemand schreibt “Mexico”.
Jemand schreibt “Polska”.
Jemand schreibt auf Französisch ein Datum
zum Beweis, dass er gestern hier war.
Manche schreiben ihre Namen, auch gegenseitig
mit Telefonnummern,
so etwas gibt es überall auf der Welt,
junge Leute lieben das.
Und jemand schreibt
Es lebe die Rote Armee,
ich liebe die Rote Armee,
und hoffe auf den Weltfrieden.

People write
on the Great Wall.
Some use chalk,
some carve into the stone.
The chalk is actually lime,
mortar between the bricks
that fell out.
Somone writes “Mexico”.
Someone writes “Polska”,
means he’s from Poland.
Someone writes a date in French
and proves he was here yesterday.
Some people write each other’s names,
with telephone numbers.
I saw this in many parts of the world,
teenagers love it.
And someone writes
The Red Army is great,
I love the Red Army,
and hope for world peace.

伊沙推荐语：千万别以为维马丁入典很容易，于私，他是我在外国人中惟一可称挚友者; 于公，他写中文诗，对于《新诗典》意义重大，但是毎次入典照样很难，他投稿落空的时候很多－因为，只要有一点小不顺，我就不会选，而他平时在中文语言场外写作，写的还是口语诗，很容易小不顺。本诗是他在这个春天的中国行中写的，写于北京，一入中文语言场，他就一顺百顺了，如此一来他这个欧洲人在＂思＂上的优势便完全发挥出来了。
徐江微博:徐江点评《新世纪诗典》维马丁《黄花长城》：用中文写作的奥地利诗人维马丁，写出了所有母语为中文的作者羡慕的诗篇。汉语的能力是一方面，更重要的是他发掘诗意的方式。连在城砖留字这样平时受谴责的行为，此刻读来都显出可爱和生趣。
李勋阳：涂鸦司空见惯，我自己写过有个家伙在一棵树上，刻了一句“某某某，我×你”，这个×字因为树长裂缝长成了个黑洞——就有意思了，到底是什么呢，维马丁这首细节也很足，就是结尾真是大力金刚掌，与长城形成足够深的意味，你想想长城本来就是战争工事，而最后落脚世界和平就有意思了
而前面还真有世界各族人，(法国的、波兰的、墨西哥的)，空间就变大了，变厚了，(咦，又是大诗么[偷笑])

赵立宏1975：从符号学角度和外国诗人看，长城有非常重要的象征内涵和文化意义，但本诗却是写现场，在“能指”层面写在旅游景点经常看到的情景，剔除了象征和意义，回到事情本身来观察、思考和呈现。可以体会到诗人的观念和价值观是包容和开放的。联想到这两天一些诗人写巴黎圣母院大火的诗歌，多么令人羞愧和不安。

벽돌 사이의 횟가루가,
떨어져 나왔다.
어떤 사람은 “멕시코”라고 쓰고
누군가는 “핀란드”라고 핀란드어로 썼다
어떤 이는 프랑스어로 날짜를 써,
자기가 어제 왔었음을 증명한다.
어떤 사람은 서로 친구의 이름을 쓰고,
전화번호까지 덧붙이었다.
전 세계에 다 있다,
청소년들은 모두 이렇게 하기를 좋아한다.
그리고 어떤 사람은
홍군은 위대하다,
나는 홍군을 사랑한다,
세계 평화를 원한다고 썼다.

有调皮的姑娘等着
一停下来把轮子中间的螺丝
拧松，
先有一边的掉下来
我下车追她，从地上捡回螺丝
可是她已经回到车另一边，
把那边的中间螺丝
拧松，
掉下来了。
大小和颜色不同了。
这次在地上很难找，
因为地上的颜色和花纹
终于找不到。
让我很烦了，
以后车怎么骑?
着急追她没赶上。
醒来慢慢地安静下来，
跟自己说是梦，
只是梦。

是一块山丘。
可以上去，
边走边讨论他。
我们上了
两千多年前的
汉宣帝
现在叫杜陵。
可惜没有杜甫。
不过旁边据说还有一位公主。
山丘一样大，
但是她好像
搞了另一个
风景区。

曾经有人摔死
在韩东的诗里，
在八十年代。
现在不可能，
修得太安全。
不过如果你硬要摔死，
也许有办法。
不要到最上面，
那边有保安。
最上面第七层，
你在六层爬出去
也许可以，如果你很瘦，
也许够高。
不过要警告你，
这次韩东不会感兴趣。

很多地方还是老样子
地方变了，拆了更多

还是老样子。
大姐做煎饼，非常好吃，
最好的早餐。
她说她四点起床，
半夜多才睡觉，
不能睡。
做得好，还能做多久?
很多地方没变多少，
只是老了些，孤独了些。
有的地方没了，太多。
有漂亮的，干净的，
老人游泳的地方，就在二环。
日坛地坛等等公园
尽量像以前。
不过房子贵，整个气氛
比十一年前没增加活跃，
反而少了些。
还能做多少?

50 YEARS UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Cultural Revolution, half a century already.
What I can’t forget until now
are a couple of pigs.
Like people they came to Democracy Wall,
like people they looked at Big Character Posters.
They ate the glue,
they ate the characters,
spat out scraps of paper.
Don’t know where those scraps went.
Those pigs went into our bellies.
The people who posted Big Character Posters,
they are all over the Internet.

AT THE CHAPEL OF ST. FRANCIS XAVIER
I like that kind of church,
rather small,
dignified, intimate.
The Chapel of St. Francis Xavier
at Wynn in Macau:
Wooden door, thin and long,
cuts the yellow wall right in half.
A butterfly’s wings,
bright and warm,
inviting me to step inside.
A sign at the door,
two lines in big letters,
from the New Testament:
“Jesus says,
I am the way, the truth and the life.”
I looked and thought,
and in my heart
I said to Jesus,
“I am sorry,
but I can’t agree.”

kleineren Kirchen,
ernst und vertraut.
Die St. Franz Xaver Kapelle
auf Coloane in Macau:
Das hohe Holztor
teilt die gelbe Mauer.
Zwei Schmetterlingsflügel,
leuchtend und warm,
ziehen mich ins Innere.
Im Eingang steht in zwei großen Zeilen
ein Spruch aus dem Neuen Testament.
“Jesus sagt: Ich bin der Weg,
die Wahrheit und das Leben.”
Ich denke nach,
dann sag ich
im Herzen zu Jesus:
“Tut mir leid,
diesem Satz
kann ich nicht zustimmen.”

BRETT VOLLER NÄGEL
wir brauchten
zwei monate
um den laden zu renovieren
aber nur zwei stunden
um diese schränke zu demolieren
das war noch nicht
das schlimmste problem
um zwei in der früh
fuhren wir elektrodreiräder
aufgetürmt mit bretterteilen
durch die ganze stadt
fanden doch keinen müllplatz
am ende aber
ein sogenanntes dorf in der stadt
im abriss begriffen
lautlos packten wir die bretter
in ein haus
von dem nur noch eine mauer
übrig war
von einem dieser bretter
hab ich mir
unvorsichtigerweise
die finger
aufgerissen

OTHER SIDE
my single bed
was always against the eastern wall
on the other side
except unfamiliar neighbours
what could it be?
every night
I nestled against the wall
sleeping soundly
until my Persian cat
ran to the neighbours
only then I saw
a huge Christ on the cross
on the other side of my wall
“ah!”
all night, all night
I have slept soundly in Jesus’s back
… as the faithful Buddhist I am!

Little Brother says: dad, Avenue of Eternal Peace
take a good look
This is the road you walked for over 20 years
I am sitting with Papa and Little Brother
I am almost crying
Finally I know
why I like the Avenue of Eternal Peace
Slowly the car passes the Military Museum
and the red walls of Zhongnanhai
and Xinhua Gate
Papa is small now he fits in an ash box
sitting between us
doesn’t take up much space
We pass the Gate of Heavenly Peace
and I see him
He stands on the square
watching us while we’re passing
Why was it so hard to write about you
You’re the son of a peasant
I was born in a village
I am also the child of a peasant
I put on army songs for you all night
Crying my heart out —
I like all that too.
