A & B

A walks on the street
all alone
B walks all alone
on the street
A wears a mask
with twelve layers
B wears twelve layers
in his breath mask
Hurriedly,
A walks forward
B walks forward
in a hurry
Actually A and B
are the same person
but in this way
they keep each other company.

HAIRDRESSER – 聂权

HAIRDRESSER

hairdresser
I don’t know what became of him.

a hairdresser when I was young.
there was a stove with open fire.
red, very red.
sleepy lamplight.
suddenly, two policemen come in
like from a winter night.

“got to let him finish the job”
two policemen
take out one pair of handcuffs,
hairdresser doesn’t say anything.
he knows why they’ve come, he was waiting for them.
he just did my hair
silently, thoroughly.
sometimes his fingers trembled a little.
like on the rafters, all the cold straw
up where the light came in.

SPIRIT ROAD

at the Eastern Tombs
they have a Spirit Road
when our lady guide
told us this path
was for calling the spirits
all of us poets
everyone diverted their feet
no matter which camp
intellectual or earthy
of the Third Generation
or the ones In Between
those with something to say
and those without
anyone who touched on the road by mistake
thought he stepped on a mine
and jumped back to the side
the road of the spirits
no trace of the living
no footprints at all

SWEET POTATO MAN GONE –

sweet potato man gone - Xidu Heshang

Xidu Heshang
THE GUY WHO SELLS SWEET POTATOES IS GONE

only the sweet potato oven is there
on the side of the road
baking by itself
next to the oven
a long line of people
but
the guy who sells sweet potatoes is gone
there is a girl with paper boxes
there is a boy who squats by the road
with a stand selling tangerines
and the cart shouting out stinky tofu
dusk and the scenes of departure
pressed into juice
by the crowd of the evening
parking lot auntie putting her life on the line
chasing a fee-dodging audi
at the bus stop
people coming to blows
only the line at the sweet potato oven
stays in perfect order
but the guy who sells sweet potatoes is gone

aber
der süßkartoffelverkäufer ist weg
da ist ein mädchen mit papierschachteln
da hockt ein mann auf der straße
und verkauft mandarinen
und der stinktofu-karren preist laut seine ware
und die menge am abend
presst ihren saft
aus dämmerung und szenen des fahrens
die tante vom parkplatz
riskiert ihr leben,
verfolgt einen audi, der nicht bezahlt hat
an der bushaltestelle

SEX EDUCATION

One of our travels
We didn’t get out very much –
Nine years ago. Led us to Qingdao –
A summer of love
Sand castles, writing on rocks
Fresh clams in small restaurants
Very cheap. I remember
We lived in a school
A hotel for the summer
It was our summer of
Watching movies together
One night we sat
In the video room
All the way until morning
There was a flick about all kinds of fish
We were attracted
And then we felt
Shaken without compare
There was a fish called salmon
They had this one time
Of uninhibited communion
At the end of their lives
Fish of great beauty
Nine years ago
We don’t remember
How great it was
But no-one forgets
The pain at the end

FLOWERS

the flowers on my desk are for you
the flowers on my desk are for you
they are for my granny
for my wife
for my mother
any woman who likes them
the leaves are rocking up in the trees
they get red one more time
they float down the river
the leaves are coming
the pigeons are on top of the roof
in the morning
caramel rocks wet on the beach
the water is clear
yesterday I went in again
herons, kingfishers, ducks, other birds
wild geese migrate
high up in formation
why are they going west
not straight south?
in the woods there is a waterfall
up the brook there’s another
where we stay there’s a school
elementary, high school, state college
from the college up on the hill
you see the whole valley
in a store after the gas station
you can get breakfast, fried stuff and such
at the counter they have a clock
clock goes the left way
numbers all backwards
people there say they don’t know where it came
the flowers on my desk are for you

IN AMERICA, THINKING OF ZHONG PIN

at vermont studio center
in front of maverick writing studio
a squirrel
shoots up a big maple tree
I think of you
I want to prove
to the world
in our time
there is still one person
who was unhappy
‘cause he did not become a poet
he could not find peace
that person was you
how does that sound
like a winter’s tale
but here in our world
there are no fairy tales
in fact you told me
“I am a hedonist
and would not be content
to become a poor poet …”
so I have to say
you did what you wanted
you followed the masses
went like all the people
so I relax
and the squirrel
jumps from the tall maple tree
to look at me
in his little eyes
I see only joy
no fear at all
it must be you
your soul is in heaven

talking on her cellphone:
“hello, director chen
just let my kid into your school
on top of the 50,000 sponsoring money

behind her
on the back seat of the bicycle
sits a little boy
three or four years old
I walk down the street
but after a while
under the afternoon
hot summer sun
I want to cry
not because I am moved
I’m not moved at all
it was no surprise
it was perfectly normal
but I want to salute

KNEELING, DEMANDING THEIR WAGES – Zheng Xiaoqiong

Zheng Xiaoqiong
KNEELING, DEMANDING THEIR WAGES

they scurry across like wandering souls at the train station
at the machines the industrial zone squalid rented rooms
their thin female bodies like knifeblades like paper
hair fibres air their fingers cut
iron plastic film etc they’re numb and exhausted
like wandering souls packed into machine tables
work clothes assembly lines their glowing eyes
in the bloom of their youth scurrying into the shadowy stream
they created themselves I can’t tell them apart
I am standing among them no one knows who I am a sack of skin
limbs movement vague expressions one harmless
face after another they are always assembled lined up
forming electronics factory anthill toy factory beehive females
smiling standing running bending curling
each simplified into one pair of hands thies
fastened screws cut iron sheets
compressed plastic curved aluminum cut fabric
their frustrated satisfied weary happy
tangled up helpless lonely expressions
they come from villages hamlets valleys teams they’re intelligent
awkward they are weak timid
today they are kneeling before the shining glass windows doors
black-clad security polished limousines green tangerines
gold-emblazoned factory name shining in sunlight
kneeling at the factory gate holding up a cardboard sign
awkward charakters “give us sweat-and-blood-money”
they look quite fearless as they kneel at the factory gate
surrounded by a crowd days ago they were colleagues
from the same province friends coworkers above or below
women without any expression watching four kneeling women workers
watching four colleagues dragged away by security watching
one of the four losing a shoe watching another worker
getting her pants torn in the struggle silently watching
four kneeling women dragged far away in their eyes
there is no sadness no joy without any expression entering the factory
their tragedy leaving me sad or depressed

MORNING, AVENUE OF ETERNAL PEACE

Little Brother says: dad, Avenue of Eternal Peace
take a good look
This is the road you walked for over 20 years
I am sitting with Papa and Little Brother
I am almost crying
Finally I know
why I like the Avenue of Eternal Peace
Slowly the car passes the Military Museum
and the red walls of Zhongnanhai
and Xinhua Gate
Papa is small now he fits in an ash box
sitting between us
doesn’t take up much space
We pass the Gate of Heavenly Peace
and I see him
He stands on the square
watching us while we’re passing

Why was it so hard to write about you
You’re the son of a peasant
I was born in a village
I am also the child of a peasant
I put on army songs for you all night
Crying my heart out —
I like all that too.

IS ZHANG ZIYI BEAUTIFUL?

Zhang Ziyi beautiful or not

Li Wei

IS ZHANG ZIYI BEAUTIFUL OR NOT?

Is Zhang Ziyi beautiful or not?
Some people say she’s beautiful,
some say she isn’t.
Liu Ping in our office
says she is not beautiful.
But Zhang Yimou says she is.
Ang Lee says she is.
Jackie Chan says she is.
Wong Kar-wai says she is.
Henry Fok’s son says she is beautiful.
Steven Spielberg says she is beautiful.
Now even Feng Xiaogang also says she is beautiful.
Then after all is Zhang Ziyi beautiful or not?
In my opinion
Zhang Ziyi is more beautiful than Zhang Yimou
and Ang Lee
and Jackie Chan
and Wong Kar-wai,
more beautiful than Henry Fok’s son,
more beautiful than Spielberg,
even more beautiful than Feng Xiaogang.
But she is not
as beautiful as Liu Ping in our office.

GOOD PEOPLE

all around us the world is full of good people.

all these good people at school want to lend you a pencil.
all these good people will rush to pull you up when you fall down.
all these good people won’t help you when you are bullied.
because to the bullies they are also good schoolmates.

all these good people at the army will polish your boots and stand guard for you.
all these good people will lend you money so you can get back to your hometown.
all these good people won’t help you if you are bullied.
because to the sergeant they are also good soldiers.

all these good people at work want to brew you a coffee.
all these good people will listen all night when you’re broken-hearted.
all these good people won’t help you if the boss shouts at you.
because to the boss they are also good workers.

all these good people on the street will pick up your things when you drop them.
all these good people want to give you directions when you are lost.
all these good people won’t help you when your house gets torn down.
because to the government they are also good citizens.

some of these good people will become good police.
some of these good police will protect you against violence.
all these good police won’t help you if there are bad policemen who beat you.
because to the bad policemen they are also good comrades.

all around us the world is full of good people.
all these good people are filled with good intentions.
our world depends on cooperation among these good people.
when it is time we need to stand up by ourselves and step past good people.

Zhan Bing 詹冰(綠血球 Taipei: 笠, 1965), from http://chinaavantgarde.com/

pentecost

many stars are out tonight
many clouds around the moon
i can’t see her from this house
she must be around the corner
must be round the neighborhood
it is pentecost today
and we heard a lovely sermon
dorothea’s going soon
there is too much distance here
people cannot feel the spirit
god vibrating on the water
jewish men from different countries
like it says there in the bible
can we understand each other
although we don’t speak the language
many men from different places
many people in vienna
are we very far from jesus
everything looks very nice
and the weather has been lovely
are we safe here in vienna
can we feel the holy spirit
dorothea preached a sermon
and we felt at home a little
some of them don’t come to church
but they are for renovation
dorothea is a priestess
and christine is a priestess
and they have a lot of spirit
so they even made us welcome
i don’t understand the people
those who dominate the churches
i don’t care for them at all
we come for the weekly service
for the singing, for the organ
for a certain tolerance
it was better for the children
when it looked a little shabby
it’s a little bit like china
there’s not much democracy
and not very much religion
god is in the organ music
the vibration on the water
it is pentecost this weekend
lovely little holiday
so we’re going to the water
at the danube, for the children
we meet friends and we meet strangers

leo’s doing better now
we had many languages
for vienna’s night of churches
it was dorothea’s project
we will have the taiwan choir
it’s an ordinary church
we are strangers in vienna
although we belong here now

IN VENICE,THINKING OF KASHGAR

venice (written on a city map) one yard of scents, with blossoms filled / one passage through the midday sun / one house, one water, one whole town / one thousand years become one day / they know it here, you’ll die quite soon / and everyone will come and say / what you may claim, and what remains / and then they’re ready to depart / cause what we are stays in this world / what we have done, what we have heard / one scent, one stone, one sound, one plan / a plea that says please understand
