ZUR ERINNERUNG AN EINEN MENSCHEN

GEDENKEN
Auch die Mörder
gedenken der Opfer,
mischen sich in die Menge,
glauben noch, weil alle Masken tragen
wird sie keiner erkennen.

I am in Vienna. From April till late June I was in China, in the countryside near Huairou, northeast of Beijing. I was invited by Shangyuan Art Museum. They built that place from 2003 to 2007. It’s like a sprawling campus. They invited artists there each year, all kinds. Cui Jian, other rock musicians, experimental sound projects. Painting, sculptors, dancing, film, photography, performance. And poetry. That’s where I came in. I was there last year too, in spring and in fall.
They demolished the big exhibition hall in June. The village party committee. In concordance with policy laid down by Winnie the Poo.
It took me a while to write down something a little longer than a poem.
I know it’s rather strange. I wanted to write much more. And I did, in poems in June, when it happened. I miss our community of artists. Being there at that time was living on a different planet. Not just different from Vienna. Different from Beijing, from the village around it, from the mountains. Even very different from being next door in the other places built by artists on the same hill and existing with the same village and party functionaries. It was and is crazy, but it is at the same time a very ordinary situation in China. There is no reason, no feasible reason for the demolition. 没文化, yes. No culture. In the structure of the state, as it comes out here. As it comes out in many places. In sharp contrast to itself, to the image the state also needs to project. Nothing new. Same inherent brutality as ever in the last 100 years maybe. Or more. Playing out in different ways. Not just in China.
I can’t write it like this, not without a lot of context. My poems are more balanced, hopefully. This text, as it has appeared in German, as I can show you in English, is like a long poem. It has to be strange.

INFORMATION
You say I don’t give enough information.
It always depends.
If you are there in Bratislava,
In Kosice, in the small towns,
In Austria, in Hungary.
Maybe you see, maybe not.
Maybe you know
how many died, how many survived.
One in forty came back.
No, even those aren’t here.
There are new houses.
There are memorials
sixty years late, seventy, eighty.
What happened in China?
What is happening now?
It’s very different
when you are there.
The feeling is different.
You know you don’t know,
you don’t know most of it.
But there is so much.
So much beauty.
So much companionship,
most of the time.
Nobody was injured,
she sings in her song,
there in the ruins,
up on the mountain.
No one was injured.
Everyone was.
Everyone is
in different ways.
It’s great to be there
among the people
most of the time.
To be a stranger
in a strange land
among many strangers
in their own country.
I am a stranger
in my own country
most of the time.
But I’m not sure,
not like in China.
It is just different.

Aufgenommen was ging.

Martin

Last night someone
put down many candles
on the ruins.
Then they stood there,
played a violin
and recited a Psalm.

WEH
Das Shangyuan Art Museum
liegt weit von der Stadt
auf dem Land in der Natur
gleich bei den Bergen.
Heuer ist es auch ganz nah
an der Gewalt.
Der absurden Gewalt
hinter der Gesellschaft.
Viel zu nah.
Man hat es betrogen.
Man hat ihm Gewalt angetan.
Die Berge bleiben,
das Unkraut steht tief.
Das Museum ist hin,
was soll weiter gehen?
Kunst machen
heisst immer
am Abgrund stehen,
gleich hinter der Gesellschaft.
Manchmal halt zu nah.
Jeder weiss das.
Wenn es passiert,
tut es
weh.

It just got too close.
It got fucked over,
it got violated.
The mountains are there,
the weeds are deep.
Art lies destroyed.
How can it go on?
To be an artist
has always meant
to be close
to a gaping hole
that lies just behind.
We know.
And when it happens,
it hurts.

STARS
Last night someone
put down many candles
on the ruins.
Then they stood there,
played a violin
and recited a Psalm.
Mother and daughter.
At the end two poets
did some of their stuff.
The candles are fine,
like the moon, don’t be scared,
the candles are fine in the ruins.
You can play your violin,
you can sing,
you can recite
whatever you like.

HURT
Shangyuan Art Museum
lies far from the city,
close to the country,
close to nature,
very close to the mountains.
This year it is also
very close to violence,
to senseless absurdity
in its society.
It just got too close.
It got fucked over,
it got violated.
The mountains are there,
the weeds are deep.

TIRED
These days
more than a week
after we knew
we have been worried.
Yesterday we had
a last exhibition.
Today was the second
black & white performance.
In the evening we get together
to eat and have fun.
I am tired.
The demolition is going ahead.
I am feeling
mainly just tired.
And it has just begun.

IN THE MUSEUM THAT IS
BEING DEMOLISHED
Here and Vienna,
two different planets.
Here and Beijing,
two different planets.
Here and the mountains
or even the neighbors,
two different planets.
Although to the neighbors
there are some relations
closer than being
in the same solar system.

MOON
This is Monday.
Last night the moon
was full and had sleep.
Although after dark
they went on demolishing.
Walking to Pingyifen
at nine o’clock
we still got noodles.
Walked back, went to sleep.
At three thirty or so
dawn was beginning.
One hour later
I crawled out of bed.
Took a shower at five
and there was water!
Around six
they went on digging.
Walked down to the basement,
there was no power.
Walked to the library
with the water heater
with ground coffee
and the French press.
The library has Wifi.
I was beginning
to get back my spirits.
Then we went out
to have a picnic
under some trees.
At around eleven
you could feel the heat.
There were some clouds,
just like a Sunday.

CHARACTER
Last year in April
when I first came
and walked through the campus
of Shangyuan Art Museum
from the front to the back
along the big exhibition hall
to the small bridge
on the left
there was a wall
a tall grey wall
crowned with barbed wire.
Looked like a prison.
What is this
I asked.
It is the house
of the poet Xi Chuan.
But he never comes
he’s never been here.
I didn’t ask more.
Now there is no exhibition hall.
From the library
from the back door
you can see over the ruins
all the way
to that grey wall.
There is enough space
to write on the wall.
Maybe just one character
maybe “shame”.
That “shame” of “no shame”.
Yes I do know
that I don’t know
very much at all.
There must be reasons
why it went this way.
But now there is room
there is very much space
now the effect
could be not bad.

and being demolished
produce the same feeling.

MEETING
The worker in front of my building asks,
what was there before?
He points at the ruins.
I don’t understand.
He came in after the big demolition,
he says.
A museum,
a very big gallery.
I’m not sure he understands.
But he knows
we couldn’t rent anything better
than the buildings still standing
in this faraway village.
I wish we could have met
under different circumstances.

DREAMING OF FATHER
Dreamt of my father
living in the countryside
but not at an actual place
that I know.
It’s on a slope
with a fence at the top.
We have a car,
it needs repairs.
At the gate there is a guy,
he says he’ll repair
the cooling fan
of the engine.
My father says,
don’t give it to him,
you know where he’ll take it?
I guess he will sell it.
It seems like we are
the only two people
who live in this place.

How many generations?
Twenty years is a long time.
Twenty years are a few days,
a few summers.
It was nice with you,
it was months,
days in the light.
So many birds,
big trees,
green mountains.
It was a beautiful museum.

Vielleicht, vielleicht …
Sollt ich sie eines Tages treffen,
was kann ich da sagen?
Eigentlich gar nichts.

will ihm etwas zum Anziehen geben,

INNERE HITZE
Ein Studienkollege lebt in Australien,
auf Besuch in Peking
kommt er zu mir zur Akupunktur.
Nach dem Schröpfen fragt er,
hab ich große Feuchtigkeit?
Ich denk mir,

dann ist das schwer zu erklären,
es geht einfach nicht.
Aber Leute mit chinesischer Herkunft
wissen sofort, was gemeint ist.

LOVE FOR A WHILE
You write some bastard poetry,
only then you get other poetry.
You fall in love with some bastards,
only then you find someone who is no bastard.
I loved you so much,

I had such grand love
for bastards and felt they were lovers.
Even though you
only loved me for a short while.

CHANGE
Maybe ten years ago,
we were drinking & talking,
he said though we are living
in a prison,
there is quite a bit of exercise.
You young guys have to learn
to seek joy in sorrow.
Today he sings praises
of his native country,
for sure doesn’t think
he’s in a prison.
No,
he would never admit
he ever said
anything like that.

PASSING THROUGH THE NORTH GATE WITH A MOUTH FULL OF VINEGAR
Got off the bus,
into the supermarket,
didn’t know what to buy,
bought a bottle of cheap vinegar.
Paid,
opened the bottle,
drank a sip,
wanting to swallow.
Then I remembered,
holding white vinegar in your mouth
can clean up the gums
and stains on the teeth.
So with that sip
in my mouth,
I walked back home
through the north gate of our compound.
The guard over there
likes to greet me and say a few words.
He saw
I looked strange,
so he asked what was wrong.
But I still had

WANG WEI
His name is actually
Wang Youwei.
Literally that means
King with a tail,
or Wang with a tail.
He is a poet
in today’s Xi’an.
Wang Wei is the great
Tang dynasty poet.
His grave is outside of Xi’an,
the former Tang dynasty capital Chang’an,
in a somewhat derelict factory.
The factory makes
something for spaceflight,
so it is secret,
big signs anounce that.
There is a roadside restaurant
called Wang Wei’s Grave.
It belongs to the factory.
In a galaxy far, far away,
we all sneaked in together,
to recite poetry
under the tree
that Wang Wei planted
thirteen hundred years ago
or so.
It was a great dynasty
in retrospect.
That’s why I call
Wang Youwei
Wang Wei,
I just can’t help it.

One in the living room.

No smoking or drinking

EACH CAT WILL BECOME HUMAN
Each person who walks in the night like a cat,
arching their back towards the end of their days.
Each one whose hands are as soft as a cat’s paws inside.
Each person who’s eating their heart out.
Each one who doesn’t care if cats are black or white
as long as they catch mice.
Each one in love with the deep eyes of a cat.
Each person whose heart is torn by a cat’s claws.
After one hot summer night
they will all be enchanted
so they become cats.
Each human all over the earth
becomes a big cat, a small cat, an old cat,
a black cat, a grey cat, a white cat, a brown cat, a striped cat.
Everything tamed becomes cruel.
Every softness evolves into hate.
Every cat will become human.

Ma Yakun
OLD HORSE
On the seventh day
she spread ash from wood and grass
at the gate
to see if father would leave a trace.
At one in the morning,
there really was a trace in the ash,
it was jumbled
imprints of hoofs.
She had never thought,
her father would come back as a horse.
She stood there alone,
hugging his portrait, and cried.
Under the pale moonlight,
everyone heard
“clip-clop, clip-clop”,
Old Horse running back and forth
out in the yard.

Li Suo
BAUMAUGEN
Auf jedem dunkelgrauen Baum
wachsen lauter schwarze Augen.
Starke Linien oben und unten,
drinnen sind die Pupillen.
Manche sind ganz regelmäßig,
ein stiller, fester Blick
durchschaut den Baum gegenüber.
Manche sind aufgesperrte Münder,
rufen ein dunkles
“Ah!”
Dreieckig oder Fischbauch-förmig,
schauen sie dich an, überrascht.
Wenn die Säge kommt,
frisst sich der Ton durch das Gesicht.
Jeder Schnitt hat seinen Verlauf,
jede Narbe
