Apartment holders of Gaodang compound (most from North Shaanxi) go to housing management and demand to grant them a spot by the gate for milking goats. And so at the gate the wondrous sight of a truck appears holding five or six goats with bulging udders. Mornings and evenings apartment people wait in long lines for the goats to arrive. The ones at the end find in their bowls freshly squeezed blood.
On the dormitory’s first floor, conditions are worst. Moss on wooden doors, rust on window bars. From outside, passing the windows, I see three special rooms, with their own bathroom, doors and windows aluminum, Simmons mattress. A black student wielding a club to chase a mouse that ran in from the Chinese students next door.
Meine Frau fragt, was ich mach.
Early morning in the horseshoe-shaped forest, finally the flock flies in again. They are in high spirits, talking excitedly. Walking quietly up to the tree, Moses, where is he? They tell me, Moses has waded through the Red Sea, left Egypt already. Tears flow to the tip of my nose.

Teacher, I am sorry. When I’m in a daze, I don‘t think anything.
If I think of how I am going to do my homework over the winter holidays, that is thinking, not dazed. If I think of how I was in class with my teacher Big Cat, that is remembering and not dazed. If I think of my dad, that means I miss him, that’s not called dazed. If I think there is a rainbow kingdom up in the sky, I am creative, not dazed. INTO SPACE
Teacher, I am sorry.
When I stare into space, I don‘t think anything.
When I think of how I am going to do my homework over the winter holidays,
that is thinking, not staring.
When I think of how I was in class with my teacher Big Cat, that is remembering and not staring.
When I think of my dad, that means I miss him, not staring.
If I think there is a rainbow kingdom up in the sky, I am creative,
not staring.
If I think of what I am going to be when I grow up, that is dreaming, not staring.
Only if I don’t think of anything, I just stare into space.

Walking from one end of the village to the other takes hardly more than 10 minutes. Since I came to live here, I have never walked like that by day. Sometimes at night, half closing my eyes, I am walking past broken houses, one after the other. Ruins, encircled by newly erected factories from every side. Wish I could meet a young student returning from school. Sometimes at sunset, I stand in a daze for a while at the edge of the village.
Disinfectant alcohol, distributed against the virus, some people drink it as liquor. Street committee worker stands at the door, shouts inside. Old guy sits on his old broken bed, drags on a cigarette. Drunk as a skunk, waves his hands, No hospital! No one pumps out his stomach! Just keeps muttering, “Fuck little thing, not worth the money!“
My wife taught me not to touch the elevator, but to bring a few seeds when I went out. When I was done I would throw them into the grass by the door. Lockdown days went on longer and longer, I had thrown away seeds over one dozen times. January passed into February, every time I threw an arc I would think maybe in March we will have a patch of sunflowers coming out.

One month ago, a little more, less than two the world went quiet. It had become quiet in China before accompanied by all sorts of noise. But when it arrived it was precious. There is strife here too, who caused it to spread, who didn’t close ski entertainment. But on the whole Austria or any place actually became like never before, except in or after the war, and that was very different, not that I was around. But no Nazis, for one. Yeah, maybe right after the war, they were also in hiding. Anyway, in times of peace, only one headline: Look Out For Youse, something like that, look out for yourself and each other, but in one word. Schaut auf Euch. And we were lucky. Take care!

If a river cost only one yuan, if a river was cheaper than one piece of cabbage, think about it, that would be exciting.
Think a little more, maybe no, thank you. Because if there could be such a deal, it would have to mean one of these things: The river can‘t carry any more water, I am the only person on earth, I rule the world, I am God.
Dreamt of our translator’s editing thing, our jour fixe at Vienna Literaturhaus. Not a fixed day, actually, but every few weeks, except in the summer. Someone brings a text, already translated, and people make suggestions to improve certain parts. I don’t always go, but it’s a good tradition. Now I went again in my dream, Brigitte was there, a few other people. It was a little awkward, but I wasn’t sure why. Had I missed the memo? Gradually I remembered it is virus time, this isn’t allowed and I am dreaming. But in the deeper levels of dreamland, it seems the virus doesn’t exist or maybe not yet.

CORONA
Actually it’s always like this for many people. You live from one day to the next. Only now it’s a big deal for the whole world for a while.
Actually it’s always like this for many people. You live from one day to the next. You have to stay in or avoid the police. You need your neighbors, but you are afraid. You could get infected any day any hour, and you need each other.
Actually life isn’t fixed, nothing’s secure, whatever they say. Actually you’re at a dance. Turning, turning and then slowing down. Standing, maybe looking for someone, if it still works.

1 POEM/DAY
One poem per day takes nothing away, I want to say. But everything takes time, every drug, every mask, every care. So one poem per day could take away whatever else you would have had. But then you could hear it again, whatever you do, if it was good.

GRINDING
The world is grinding to a halt. So are we all madly in love? Or have we come to our senses about the climate between each other? About working together? We don’t have a choice. And we don’t have a choice in hoping it will soon be over. And we still let them set our clocks.
My mobile phone weighs 16 grams, it’s full of all kinds of data, political theory, philosophical research, classical literature. But only recently I have discovered, my mom’s mobile weighs 128 grams, and it has only my photo.
Two young women slip into the gynaecology ward. The doctor asks questions, every time it’s the escort who answers. The doctor asks the escort to wait outside. But the other woman walks outside with her. The doctor gets impatient, “It’s you who is pregnant, what are you walking out for?“ In the corridor I saw the two women adjusting their masks. In our small town at the start of the virus they were the first to hide their faces.
Along the road at the foot of South Mountain, cars are parked everywhere. While we are climbing, the sunlight is fine. There are some other people like us, wearing face masks, talking and laughing. In the city, meeting up is forbidden. So we sneak off, two or three at a time, to the slopes of South Mountain to get outside and feel the wind.
Virus time means people forward these articles where good-hearted people remind you your every word every move every step every act is being watched. Who doesn’t know there are people watching? So these people should rather be watching this.
Manchmal helfen Gedichte in barbarischen Zeiten.
Most supermarkets have just empty shelves. Online meat and vegetables are hard to find. Milk and eggs whole wheat bread also gone. Turned out the freezer, found a surprise, a few jiaozi. Carrot-celery-beef filling, greatest stuff in the world, never had anything better.

When I was small, when I was frightened, my mother always gently stroked my neck and said, „Hug, hug, hug the neck, fear must go away.“ She said it three times, my fear disappeared.
Now, when my child is afraid, I do what my mother did, holding, hugging, saying the words three times around and the crying has stopped.

JESUS LEBT
This is what I do. Writing. Reading. Translating. Poetry. As much as possible. Stories. Don’t know how much I can make this year, maybe very little, I could run out of money. Anyway. I am privileged. We are privileged, our family. No-one is sick, until now. At least I hope, spoke to my mum yesterday. They are fine, I hope, my sister lives across the street, two or three houses down and across, very close. They are all fine, I hope, the whole extended family. My mother’s brother, they have a little garden, they stay there in summer, maybe they are there now, it’s a warm day, and it’s not far, in Vienna. My cousins, they are at home, in Vienna, my cousin’s daughters, all grown up, like my nephews, my sister’s kids. One’s a doctor, the oldest, not finished yet, but he volunteered, he is helping, at the doors of one hospital, screening people. Overall Austria has been very lucky. Less than 200 dead
in early April,
about one tenth of the rate in Germany, they have been lucky too, until now. We can go out, if we’re careful. Wearing masks in the stores. Leo and I, we ride our bicycles up the hill every day. Maia rides her bike, Jackie stays at home, goes out in the evening. We are goddamn lucky. Easter is coming, I should watch my language. Austria is goddamn lucky. There I go again, sorry. We should share our fair burden with the EU. Not sure we are doing that. Anyway, we are careful, we help each other, hopefully. Some people don’t have enough space in the city, not everyone has an open park right downstairs like we do. Some parks are closed, some should be open, this has been the biggest fight in this little country. That and that province, down in the alps. Up in the alps, I mean. People got infected there in early March, till the middle of March some hotels weren’t closed. Skilifts were running. So we don’t have a good reputation, People got infected in Austria. And the provincial governor refused to speak to foreign media. But we are lucky, people have other problems. Jobs. Parents. Grandparents. Kids. This is what I do, writing. Up on our roof, in the sun. Meeting neighbours, talking. Quite enough room. Singing downstairs, in the corridor outside, with next-door neighbours. Godawful lucky.
Wieso so unentschieden?
In my sights straight in the distance, a white dove goes through a fire up to the sky. Still it flies, changed into black. Maybe just its shadow, its soul flying. Maybe the ash can keep the shape of a dove sailing on.
Ye Zhen YOU SAY WHEN YOU DIE IN FOREIGN PARTS, REEDS IN THE WIND WILL STAND IN – TO A POETRY FRIEND WHO DIED FROM THE VIRUS
Last summer we walked at the reservoir, saw how the reeds swayed in the wind. Two dragonflies, one on top of the other, landed on a reed. Then the wind picked up, they couldn’t stay, had to fly up in the wind doing their thing, one stacked on another up in the air.

„Einwandfrei“ – A Complaint Free World.
„Gewaltfreie Kommunikation“ (Der Titel sagt alles. Sei ein braver und sanfter Untertan!)

We haven’t had very much contact, but then this friend who researches old Chinese literature suddenly calls me. „This is the year of a pandemic, you are a poet, you have to write about this.“ I hasten to say, I am writing, but after the call I’m a little uneasy. If I hadn’t been writing, how could I face my friend? You start on this road of writing poetry, there will be people watching. No matter if you know it or not, it’s like they’re shining a light on your face, looking for the four letters for “poet”, so can I take that, to be on the spot?

Coming out of People’s Park I run into a shower and hide in the guardhouse at the gate. The grandpa on duty asks for my age and tells me his.
